Name recognition (and Sidney Moncrief) help Oral Roberts land latest recruit

Eddie Sutton has been retired from coaching ever since the brief farewell fling he had at the University of San Francisco in 2008.

Think the Sutton name still has some currency in the basketball world? It paid off when Oral Roberts University got its latest men’s basketball commitment.

Scott Sutton is, of course, the men's head basketball coach at ORU and one of his assistants is younger brother Sean Sutton. Their father is Eddie Sutton, who coached at Creighton, Arkansas, Kentucky, Oklahoma State and (for a few months) San Francisco.

ORU’s latest pledge came from Dederick Lee, a combo guard from Clarksville, Ark., who once was committed to Arkansas.

Lee committed on his father’s 42nd birthday. I had a phone conversation with the father (Frederick Lee) to talk about the commitment. I told the dad (before knowing his age) that he was probably too young to remember when Eddie Sutton coached at Arkansas. And the dad unleashed a you’ve-got-to-be-kidding laugh before telling this story:

Frederick Lee said his sister lives in Dallas. She had a conversation with with Sidney Moncrief, who was a star player for Sutton at Arkansas in the 1970s. She told Moncrief which schools were recruiting Dederick. According to Frederick, Moncrief told her Dederick needs to go to ORU because that would allow him to be coached by people in the Sutton family tree.

Moncrief was one of Sutton’s Arkansas “triplets” alongside Marvin Delph and Ron Brewer. For what it’s worth, Frederick said he knows the other triplets, too. Credit Moncrief with one last assist.
