National Reputation the Worst Penalty for OU
Published: 7/12/2007 11:31 AM

The actual penalties handed Oklahoma football on Wednesday by the NCAA should have little or not impact on the program.
The only apparent hit will be with OU's national reputation.
Seven football-related probations will be repeated by those wishing to emphasize the negative.
That may have some impact, certainly it will in perception around the country, but the actual penalties shouldn't slow OU football.
Giving up some victories in 2005 seems like an insignificant penalty, at best. Does anyone care? Will opponents or OU change their record books to reflect the forfeited victories?
Even if it is reflected in some record books, does it really change the outcome?
No. The forfeiting of eight victories won't really matter in the big scheme.
And, the two scholarship loss the next couple of years won't slow down OU's usual fine recruiting. There will still be plenty of good players that want to play in Norman.
In the end, it was bad news on a slow news day on the sports scene. So, perception of the OU program around the country may have taken a hit.
But in the long run, I'm not sure even that matters much.

Of course, national reputation matters. Try leaving the state and listening to the remarks about the Sooners being all outlaws. We were just beginning to outlive the sins of the Switzer era .
The Oklahoma football program does not belong to Stoops, Boren, nor Switzer. It belongs to the alums of OU,and the people of Oklahoma who support the school with tax dollars, and their presence at athletic events. Enforcement of NCAA regs needs to be taken out of the athletic department where the coaches have a vested interest in winning at all costs. A real enforcer who reports to the Regents should be appointed. A reputation for being arrogant to the rules lasts much longer than any coach.

John: Agree with you on the statements you made about the effect of the sanctions on Oklahoma Football. The only thing you didn't cover is, if OU is caught up in future misdeeds. I believe it would be katy bar the door as I think the death penalty would be possible. Stoops better make sure he recruits responsible Student Athletes. The papers in Phoenix picked up the story on the Sports Front Page..They did not cover the Bush Violations, but did
cover (lightly) the Clarett Violations, when they occured..

Andrew, finally an OU supporter who really loves his school!! The program DOES belong to the alumni and the donors, not to these idiots, who love OU football, but couldn't pick Norman out on a map!!!

T-Bone, surely you jest!!!! Do you think the NCAA would give the death penalty to OU for any infraction whatsoever???

We've quickly forgotten the free Lexus that Peterson drove for an extended period, have we not? That didn't even hit the NCAA radar, for God's sake!

OU is bulletproof and they know it. All they'll ever get is a slap on the wrist and a "Naughty, naughty!"

Right on. For a state and football team that took it's name from Oklahoma's original "cheaters", one more shouldn't matter.

Now Bill, you and I know anyone can go to their local car dealership and test drive a Lexus for two months!!

Well, I for one am proud of the Univ of Texas at Norman. I think all Texans should be proud too.
Mike Wright (6 years ago)
JIMBO is right. Boren has been heavily recruiting enrollees from Texas. Last fall there were 3500 Texans on the OU campus. The reason is that his incessant tuition hikes have made OU unaffordable for average-income Oklahomans. Median family income is higher in Texas and he knows it. For documented information about Boren's corrupt empire, email me -- mpwright9 at aol.com
