13 -- Earlier in the year, you will recall that we took the OU womens team out of any Final Four possibility, the reason being: too s-l-o-w. Turns out we were too optimistic. They're no longer a top ten team.

14. Pretty amazing that these two men wanted to coach at TU but didn't get to: Lovie Smith, A & M's Gillispie!

15. What's up with Linda Cohn being on ESPN so infrequently? The women -- former OU star Stacy Dales, for example -- are the only ones worth watching.

16. The point spread of Indy minus 7 is starting to sound a little high.

17. There's a very positive trend in local sports talk radio. Nobody calls in.

18. Does anybody care that ORU doesn't win much?

19. Can OSU stars Boggan or Curry play in the NBA? Close. Six-foot eight guys need to be tanks or shooters. Both of these players are probably 50-50 to make a team.

20. Nobody ever eats or uses the restroom on "24."

Gillispie took his name out of the TU job when he had the chance -- he deferred to Roberts, who hasn't exactly set the world on fire at St. John's.

Those were the Judy MacLeod years. I honestly think her unsuccessful hires outweight her successful ones.

I'd say that the OU women are a possibility for the Final Four, mainly because of Paris and the ability to shoot the 3. They must rebound better defensively (Ohio St. hammered them on the boards) to make it. After watching the top ACC teams and Tennessee, I think the Lady Sooners are destined for a loss in the Elite 8.

As for Bedlam last night, I'll make the following comment:

Coach Capel is doing a fine job with this Sooner team. OSU is a MUCH better basketball team, but couldn't put away a motivated Sooner squad.

As for the Dallas coaching job, it's hard to imagine Jones being able to find a quality candidate with a lot of experience at this point in time. I just hope they don't take the leap that the Raiders took.

That Kragthorpe guy turned out to be good.

Judy did a phenomenal job with the non-revenue sports, which in turn got TU in CUSA -- a much better place than what the WAC become.

Keith Burns was a terrible hire. There are no excuses on that front.

Buzz is complicated. He had a phenomenal resume. His staff wasn't bad (I think Keating is now the top assistant at UCLA). He had an eye for talent. He turned out to be a weasel and the writing was on the wall in that regard (he accepted the SMS job at one point and then changed his mind).

JP might have been OK if he had hired a staff that knew what it was doing. He turned out to be decent for two years -- how his second team won a game in the tourament is beyond me.

Really, the thing that bugs me about Judy to this day is that she wanted to hire Pooh as the head coach. Pooh might be good eventually, but he should have been shown the door with everyone else. It should not have been a question.

I could dunk on any of the OU women.

Capel isn't a good hire because he played OSU close.

He's a good hired because after what Sampson did to the program, he didn't run screaming into the night.

Because The Picks is no Sampson fan, not even close, this is something of a difficult admission: Indiana is pretty good.

Like I said, unsuccessful outweighs successful. Kragthorpe, McConnell-Miller, and Self are it.

Bad hires: Keith Burns, Buzz Peterson, John Phillips, several softball coaches, women's golf, rowing, women's soccer and women's volleyball.

Coaches of men's soccer, men's golf and men's tennis predate her. The current women's tennis coach had been an assistant for the men's team for 12 seasons.

Wojick doesn't play because that was Upham's decision, which probably helped prompt her to leave.

Facilities were upgraded due to Lawless.

Her best play was guiding Tulsa into C-USA, but that was a recovery move after guiding Tulsa into the WAC.

Basically, she looked good by those around her.

The move to the WAC predates JM. To be fair, there are conflicting accounts as to whether TU had an option other than the WAC -- some say we could have gone to CUSA while others say that CUSA didn't want Tulsa because all the non-revenue facilities were so bad. The WAC is better than no conference at all, which is where TU was (the Valley stunk in those days). The WAC TU joined was pretty darn good. It seems like this paper ran an article a couple of years back crediting a lot of the facility upgrades to JM. I'm the biggest fan of her, but I definitely think she was better than many make her out to be.
Chris (6 years ago)
Here are some excerpts from the column you spoke of by John Klein concerning TU facilities. It came out about a month before JM left:

"TU's generous donors, many with no ties to the university, brought Tulsa's facilities into the 21st century. However, a fundraising crisis, which has stalled the north end zone facility at Skelly Stadium, may be a sign all is not well.

A growing number of TU's most influential boosters are unhappy with Director of Athletics Judy MacLeod. They would like to see a more dynamic figure with the ability to raise funds and keep Tulsa a viable Division I-A football member of the NCAA." ...

"To her credit, Tulsa's facility facelift and two conference moves have been accomplished on MacLeod's watch.

Her critics would counter that the building boom was the result of donors also being forced to be fundraisers. And two conference moves in a decade aren't exactly symbols of stability." ...

"TU friends and alumni raised nearly $32 million to open the 8,355-seat Reynolds Center in 1999. Then, TU tennis coach Vince Westbrook pulled off a miracle. During tight economic times, he convinced local real estate giant Mike Case, with no ties to TU, to be the spark for a athletic department renaissance on the west campus."

Judy took over on an interim basis in '95. Tulsa entered the WAC in '96, guided by Judy.

Lawless was all about bringing sports to campus when he took over. And people quickly forget that Lawless was chair of the NCAA competition committee. Tell me that doesn't carry a lot of weight when you want to build on campus facilities.

I'm pretty sure the WAC negotiations were pre-Judy. We lost Dickinson (sp?) and Small after that, if I recall right.

Didn't Judy win some big award around the time that Klein wrote that article? There was a whole page on her if I remember -- it seems like I heard she wasn't happy that other area ADs had gotten so much attention in the paper when she had won an award. Like I said, I'm not the biggest fan of her -- but she ain't all bad, either. She did some good things.
Bill (6 years ago)
First of all, before I make my own comments on a couple of the Picker's points, let me second the views of TAB. I think he's on the mark.

14. Billy Gillispie deferred to Norm Roberts as the candidate out of the assistants' ranks. Roberts made it sound as though all the assistants had got together and decided on him. Not true. JP had been going to throw his hat in the ring ... until he was preempted by Roberts. When Judy asked Billy why he wasn't a candidate, he told her, "I just don't think I'm ready yet."

17. Can you blame anyone for not wanting to call in? Sports talk radio has become a bunch of idiots ranting and raving and trying to be more outrageous than the other guys. It's not about information any more, it's about being rude and getting people to listen or call in because they're angry. I'd sooner listen to the "All Time Hits From Sesame Street" than sports talk radio.

Am I the only one who thinks the World's headline this morning put words in Bob Stoops' mouth?

He said:

"To end speculation here in the heart of recruiting I want to make it clear that I am not interested in any other coaching positions at this time. I am too excited about our future at Oklahoma and the program we're continuing to build."

He didn't say anything about staying at OU next year. He said he was excited. He said he was interested at this time. What happens in five days when he actually has a conversation with Jerry Jones or anything else associated with the Cowboys.

It just seems this statement leaves some wiggle room for Stoops. He didn't flat out and say something like "I am not going to coach the Dallas Cowboys" because he's seen what's happend to Saban. Maybe he is interested. Maybe he doesn't want to completely shut doors. It just seems he didn't say a lot.

It's hard to imagine a personality less compatible with the NFL psycho mentality than Stoops'.

Plus he can't stop the pass.

"ORU doesn't win much"?

ORU has won EIGHT STRAIGHT as of 1/28!

How much more will qualify as "much"?

And yes, there is a relatively small but loyal core of ORU fans that cares very deeply whether ORU wins or not - and they're a pretty satisfied lot these days...
