It's time to get tougher.

1. Local sports fans owe the nation an explanation.

This city couldn't sell out a high school gym, with ORU playing for an NCAA tournament berth!

Tuesday evening during a game televised on ESPN, empty seats were obvious at the UMAC, Union High's home court.

We needed the Hooterville Cam that shows only people seated in the middle at athletic events.

If we can't sell out a high school's gym, what's going to happen at the new BOK Hoosegow Arena (it's going up next to the Sheriff's slammer)?

2. OU women depress in-state media.

It has been written here numerous times that most OU athletic teams are overrated. It's no fault of OU. Why are they so overrated? An adoring media, natch, that's who circulates all the good words prematurely.

It is our contention, when it comes to reaching a national high, that the OU football team, and women's basketball team, were similar in one regard: A great star was responsible for the rise to the top, Heupel in football, Dales in women's hoops. Star-type ability of that nature does not continue just because people wish for it to be so.

3. OU's excellent freshman basketball player needs one thing before entering the NBA.

A shot.

People voted with their butts regarding ORU. Not much interest in a school of ill repute!!!

The entire sports media in both the Tulsa and OKC area with the exception the university owned OSU anchor and The Picker, are ask kissers for anything OU. Please, now they report this from the OU coaches 2 years later ( Wilson said head coach Bob Stoops and "defensive coaches" approached him after the Fiesta Bowl with the idea of speeding things up offensively.) Picker how can you office with these guys

He's going to make 10 million whether he has a shot or not. If you could make 10 mil for just signing on the dotted line, wouldn't you?

Jay:

We have a lot more going for us than just the play of a fantastic quarterback in the 2000 season.

We played for the national championship game two times without Josh and we compete or win the Big 12 nearly each year. Those are accomplishments that most programs would be grateful for.

As far as the media goes, they give the people what they want and most of us want news about our favorite program. The other state programs just flat don't have the support and interest that OU has.

Also, regarding the media, the Tulsa World, starting with the late Bill Conners, is the biggest bunch of OSU homers ever assembled. Many times their unctous blarney is enough to gag a maggot! They never fail to accentute the positive and eliminate the negative when covering OSU.

Keep up the good work Jay. I have read your column for years, even back to your days with the Tribune. I respect your handicapping and have always worried when you picked Texas to beat us. I know you graduated from OU but now make your living taking cheap shots at us in your columns though I must admit that you are the most objective at the Tulsa World.

Who's Jay? Don't know what that means.

Anyway, so OU Frosh is a top-15 NBA pick? Says a lot more about the NBA than it does Griffin, right? I'm 6'3", can I expect to go in, like, the early second round?

5 Big 12 Titles in 8 years. What a failure.

Why would a TU, OU, or OSU fan go see ORU-IUPUI ? If it were ORU-Duke or ORU-Texas, then maybe. ORU picked a non-entity league and has to suffer the consequences. Now, if TU ever has to play Memphis for a spot in the big show you could expect the BOK thing to be packed to the rafters. As for OU I'm not a fan, but to even get in the big game is an accomplishment considering the byzantine way teams are chosen for what is once again a myhtical nat'l championship.

It's ORU for crying out loud! Who would PAY to see them when they can stay home and NOT have to watch them? I hope they enjoy the one game they'll play in Chatanooga or somewhere equally boring, before returning back to the Lindsey Roberts Dating Game. Seriously, I think the picker is off his nut on this one.

Willie, I think the Picker is making an arguement in favor of going to watch ORU. Hell, I probably would have gone and rooted against them had I been in town.

Hey Bill.... lay off the enter button.

Sounds like some of you have basketball envy. ORU is clearly better than OSU and TU.... they showed that on the court. As for not coming to watch ORU-IUPUI play - you missed a good, competitive game. And the TU fans hurt their chances to get the Conference USA Tournament.... If you don't think Memphis will use the attendance figures to lobby against TU - you are fooling yourselves.
WCO you still on here? (5 years ago)
WCO, come on now. Still talking about OSU bias.

Have you ever read Sittler? If he knew you were an OU fan, he would kiss you.

Out Pick The Picker

The Picker began entertaining – and infuriating – sports fans in 1993. Each week during football season, he writes about his picks of college and NFL games in his Thursday Sports column. He's never afraid of sharing his opinions about the game and the personalities who play it. Readers have a chance to go against him each season in the Outpick the Picker contest. He welcomes the competition.
