North Texas Aftermath
Published: 11/16/2007 10:31 PM

People ask me what I think of Oklahoma State losing a basketball game at North Texas.
This is what I think: Not a big deal.
North Texas is good (23 wins and an NCAA Tournament last season) and seven OSU players were playing their first major college road game. The outcome was no surprise. The only surprise was that the Cowboys' veterans (excluding Marcus Dove, who scored a career-best 23 points) did not play better.
In the what-have-you-done-for-me-10-seconds-ago Internet age that we live in, some folks are probably ready to find a panic button to push. Hit the pause button first. Forgive me for buying into a glass-half-full approach, but I think a great rookie (James Anderson), plus improved depth and chemistry may allow the Cowboys to be better than projected.
Let's see how they do in Maui next week.

Jimmie, I totally agree. The time to push the "panic button" would be after another year, and the win/loss tally is heavy with losses. First road game loss, and "Oh my God, we are going to have a bad season", that does not make sense.

Excellent analysis. What are realistic expectations for this year's OSU team? I think a 22-win season would be fantastic and would "exceed expectations."

Yes, we're young, relatively inexperienced, and are working on team chemistry.

But most telling, this team doesn't yet have a personality or a "go-to guy" to carry the team on his back. I think we are still struggling to fill the shoes of Mario Boggan, someone who can reliably get us 20 points and 10 rebounds a night. Until that happens, we're going to continue to struggle.

Just out of curiosity, when is the last time OSU won a D-I game on the road?

It seems like the only time they are a threat is when they play in the friendly confines of GIA.

So, to make a long story short, losing to NTU on the road is really only living up to expectations.

Thank you Jimmie for such a level-headed entry. We need more like that. The NOW NOW NOW mentality of everyone is getting really tiring.

Bill: OSU won seven times on neutral courts last season. It's the true road games that give the Cowboys the willies. Pokes haven't won a true road game since K-State in February of 2006 (Terrel Harris hit a late shot from the corner). OSU needs to win at Baylor in a Big 12 road opener in order to keep the road thing from being even more of a mental block.

OK, after blowing a large lead against LSU, being blown out by Marquette and marginally competitive against Illinois, are you ready to hit the panic button?

I disagree with Doug Gottlieb's assessment of the Pokes, but they must find a point guard somewhere in Stillwater. The play in the Illinois game that summed up the struggles for this team was when Anthony Brown came out to set the screen for Byron Eaton and then rolled to the basket for an easy shot and Byron did not even look for him.

It will be a very long season if no one with more ball savvy can be found.
