One of the most amazing sights of the year happened over the weekend. I saw it along with about 45 others in the bleachers at the Hula Bowl: The Boise State quarterback threw Paul Thompson a pass! And it was complete for about a ten-yard gain. So much for Thompson's career as a quarterback.

If Adrian Peterson played at, oh, Illinois or Washington or Florida State, here's what most around here would probably think: That guy is some player, fast, tough, but if I were a pro team, I wouldn't use that a high pick on him. Too injury prone. Too vulnerable to direct hits. Not quite elusive enough. The prototype for a successful NFL back is a smaller and more compact individual who has great lateral maneuverability -- can take a beating and keep on darting.

We're 6-2 against the point spread in the pro playoffs. Using Seattle plus 8 versus the Bears was almost unfair. It was obvious that San Diego was in big trouble when coach Marty was shown on the sidelines with headphones in place!!!!! During San Diego's remarakable hot streak, Marty just stood there, unplugged. Tom Brady looks like any other decent quarterback. San Diego did everything right, yet lost. Marty is cursed in more ways than one. By some fans. By bad luck.

Kansas is the best basketball team in the country at the moment. That's a good kind of heat, but it's on Bill "His Own" Self nonetheless. A trend that has dogged Self's big-time talent before is the late-season flame-out caused by who knows what -- fatigue? This KU team is so intense right now -- foes are frequently fortunate to get the stupid basketball across half court -- maybe an element of pacing would be wise.

The way you beat a more talented college basketball team is you play zone and hope the better players miss.

How can the Bears be favored over New Orleans?

I know it's a bit predictable, but I'm rooting hard for the Saints to win it all. What a story that would be. The difference makers on this squad are highlighted by a free agent QB...a good RB that deserves the chance to play in the big one (Duece)...a 1st round RB...a last round WR...and a new coach that glued it all together on the field. Evidence abounds here that teams can be turned around in a year with intelligent off season moves.

On to hoops. That game last night between OSU and UT was great. You talk about great players. Boggan and Durant are outstanding. At 7 ft (or so), Durant handles it better than any of OU's guards, and it's not even close. What a shot Boggan hit. Hoops is fun to watch when two great teams square off.

It's scary what KU did to OSU, but I think the Allen mistique and a rough start doomed the Coyboys that night. Regardless, the Jayhawks are very good. Unless they draw horribly at the big dance, Self should get this bunch to the Final Four. Even a rough draw shouldn't be an excuse though...

The Big 12 has 3 Final Four contenders right now...
