Now we know who survives armageddon: Bowl officials
Published: 7/4/2012 6:02 AM

I can see it now.

In the distance there is a city in rubble, destruction from the final great nuclear war.

But out of the rubble there is movement, you see...four men in canary yellow blazers rising from the ashes.

College bowl games are apparently the new cockroaches. Not even the armageddon of a college football playoff can kill the bowl system.

Less than two weeks after it was announced a playoff would take place in Division I college football in 2014, the bowl system has reestablished itself -- and now appears as strong as ever.

Sure the national title game will be farmed out to the highest bidding city, but six bowl games -- up from four in the current system -- will have increased prominence in the new bowl/playoff format.

Two games get the national semifinals, while the other four figure to have intriguing matchups. And all six will occupy prime television real estate Dec. 31 and Jan. 1.

It's almost like a return to the good old days, where the bowl system ruled Jan. 1 with an iron fist.

The Atlantic Coast Conference and the Orange Bowl forged a 12-year partnership Tuesday, with the game scheduled for New Year's Day at noon each season.

As part of the agreement, the ACC gets to sell the TV rights and keep at least 50 percent of the profits -- it's another compromise by the bowl folks, but one that is necessary to keep them in the game.

A college football playoff was supposed to -- and probably should have -- killed the bowl system. Instead, college administrators couldn't part with their old friends.

Now the bowl system has once again reinvented itself and may be even harder to kill in the future.

Perhaps I'll rewrite my script. I bet zombies would look great in really bright blazers.

Mr. Peters, are you advocating elimination of all bowls, or merely expressing frustration at the way the bowl system is trying to insert itself into the new playoff scheme? If the latter, I agree.

How would you advocate the use of bowls for teams that win conference championships but aren't ranked among the top four in the polls?
