Nurse!

There are fancy new cars by the dozen. There is gourmet food by the truck-load. There are flowers by the acre. Why are there no awnings over the main bleachers at the PGA championship?

The PGA doesn't release attendance figures.

Now, why might that be?

The 30,000 estimate for the opening day appeared to this trained eye to be high, even if they counted volunteers and squirrels. By the end of the day, it looked like the State Amateur championship at the Guymon Country Club and Snack Bar.

Friday noon, traffic around Southern Hills was about like some average Tuesday in February.

If conditions are a threat to the health of spectators and players alike, why wouldn't they change the start times on the weekend to an earlier hour instead of the heat of the day?

Thank you nurse, we're better now.

The main thing that has come through this PGA is what a great course Southern Hills is. It is better than most remembered, one of the world's finest. It negates the cheap technology and returns the game of golf to a test of skill, not equipment.

Mr. Picker, your comment is right on point. Southern Hills presents a true test of golfing abilty which is shot making under various conditions. At some venues golf has become only strength/length.

This is a tribute to the architect, Perry Maxwell, who started his brilliant career with four holes in his pasture in Ardmore. That meager beginning is now Dornick Hills, another masterpiece. I suggest that you read, "The Midwest Associate" which details the various courses in Oklahoma which Maxwell built and renovated on his way to national prominance.

By the way, do we still have our wager in which I took Tiger -vs- The Field?

Also by the way, there is another fan of your column using the moniker "Gene" so would it be OK for me to identify myself as, "Gene the Magnificant"

Gene...what a suckup.

Tonsil . . . you have a magic way with words. I bet that your are a high school graduate.

How might you know, Gene? In the first place, it isn't 'your a high school graduate', it's 'you're a high school graduate'. And it isn't 'I bet', it's 'I'll bet'. So, who's the unlettered chimp here?
tonsil (6 years ago)
...and I'm surprised you were able to get your nose out of the Picker's pucker long enough to send the gibberish you just sent.

Tonsil, thanks for the grammur lessen. I take back everything I said (and thought) about you, and more. We need more smart people like you in this country. Did you ever think about a career in politics?
tonsil (6 years ago)
Gene, there you go again. It isn't 'lessen', it's 'lesson.' Mirriam-Webster defines 'lessen' as 'to reduce in size, extent, or degree'; you clearly meant 'lesson', which M-W describes as 'a piece of instruction'. And for that, you're welcome. A suggestion? If you're doing your own keying, you undoubtedly have access to a spell-checker (which, admittedly, will not correct the incorrect usage of correctly spelled words (see: malapropism)), but if you could conceivably narrow down the intended meaning to one or two similar words, you could then go to one of many available online dictionaries and verify that you are, indeed, using the correct word and, consequently, not making an ass of yourself. Regards...T.

Oh, and regarding the question about my involvement in politics, it's probably time to reveal my identity...I'm Jim Inhofe.

Gene and tonsil, you two Nancys quit fighting. Now that golf is over lets talk about a real sport.....OU FOOTBALL!
Picker, I got OU at 13-1 and NATIONAL CHAMPIONS. Our young q-back will be good. How do I know? Because he'll be wearing crimson and cream is the only answer I need to say. BOOMER...............SOONER....
tonsil (6 years ago)
Ah...at last...Herb...a voice of reason crying out from the barren, baked landscape of the golf course. You're right, H...it's Sooner time in O-land.

FYI -Picker.

It's Sunset Hills in Guymon and in no way does it resemble a country club. The course is a fun one to play and they make a mean burger at the snack bar.

I think it was hotter there as well during the week, but much less humidity so there may have been more spectators.

The thing that disappointed me about Monday afternoon was the limited number of golfers out practicing and how spread out they were. I was there though with my son and we enjoyed the day.
