OKC Thunder or Blunder?
Published: 10/31/2008 1:03 PM

Some of the thrill seems to be gone from the arrival of OKC's new NBA team AFTER ONE GAME!

KRNK, Redneck Radio, the local sports talk radio outlet down the Pike, sounded thunderstruck because the new team is really bad -- because it isn't New Orleans -- and because some players would rather be in Seattle and weren't giving interviews.

Already, they're giving away tickets.

The nickname is so out-there, there's not even a mascot!

Hang in there neighbors, you still get to see opposing stars.

Mr. Picker, didn't you predict this?

I could care less about the NBA Mr. Picker, but how is the Tulsa franchise doing.
As to football: There isn't much to write about in the Eastern part of the state.
The rinky Dink Tulsa thing must be exciting. I guess the stadium and the parking lot hold a few if combined.
I guess the normal suck up to Arkansas isn't very effective this year.
Cast your nets wide Mr. Picker. The catch at home isn't much to speak of.
Yes Yes Yes, I know Tulsa is a fine educational institution.
The Tulsa defense are the OU players in different jerseys. And no I am not an OSU fan.

Nothing this organization has done has impressed me: from the foolishness of the e-mail scandal in Seattle, to the bungling of their eventual move to OKC, to the delays involving their name choice, to the leaking of the name and logo before the announcement, to their snub of the rest of the state by naming the team "Oklahoma City" instead of "Oklahoma", to the controversy surrounding their choices for radio and TV announcers, to their less-than-inspired promotional efforts at the games they have hosted so far, and their paranoia surrounding player and staff interviews. I honestly think OKC is ready for a big league franchise - I'm just not so sure they got one in this deal.

Picker,
How many franchises have come up with a mascot in less than 120 days?

You think Seattle came up with the Sasquatch on day 1?

Kinda of snide talking about the thunder in such doomsday turms when you run the houston game on the inside of the second page of todays edition?

We get it, Tulsa doesn't care. No biggie. Just don't blame it on the team being called OKC and not OK. You don't support it because it is in OKC. If it was called Oklahoma it would make no difference.

Would the world assign a beat writer and provide better coverage if it was called OK?

I think not. You don't want them to succeed or even care about them. So, quit talking about it.

Clearly you have no clue anyway based on your statements above.

1) Already giving away tickets

2) The players are unhappy and would rather play in Seattle

Why don't you stick to TU football and how they have been snubbed all season.

Oh that is right, they were exposed for what they are on saturday. A good team that plays in a horrible conference that hadn't played a decent team all season.

I wish I was as smart as JG78.

Yeah. I never knew 'term' was actually spelled 'turm.'

I wonder what the Thunder will change their name to when they head north to Kansas City in a year or two. The OKIES?
jg78 (4 years ago)
Chester,
Of all things to point out and attack in my statement, you attack a typo. WOW.

OSUNDN,
They won't just move the team because they stink. Kinda of hard to justify moving when they will finish in the top 10 of attendance this year. Not to mention the forthcoming Ford Center renovation. The Ford "Barn" should transform into a top venue.

Maybe they could relocate to Claremore? Oh thats right, not much intrest in NBA up in those parts. Now pig wrestling, cock fighting, or chaw spitting would have a chance up in the NE part of the state.

Picker...isn't is about time to start a new string?

William,

He can't. He only knows a couple tricks. That's one of them.

It's getting old.

This is to KEN from a blog or two back:
If you'd pull your head out and read what I wrote you'd know that I wasn't looking for a book on OU's history- I was looking for a book about Bud Wilkenson. Since I wasn't alive when he coached, I was curious about the man- not about the team. I know all about the records and tradition he established. But since you choose to ignore my written words and type before you think, you have proven yourself to be a imbecile.
cyco myko (4 years ago)
Okay Licker,
I'm still waiting for you to come up with your list of better names for the OKC team. What do you think they should have named it? The name's not any more 'out there' than the Magic or the Heat. What are their mascots? I don't care so much about the NBA, but Thunder isn't any lamer than some others around the league.
And why should I pay off on that bet? I told you the season's not over. Did they already play the bowl games? Again, you should know that there is still much football to be played. Should, but don't.
User Name TBD (4 years ago)
Myko,

He tried to do that, but all he can do is come up with condescending names or names which question the intelligence of Oklahomans. It's strange that he would do so, since he himself is Oklahoman, I presume.

If he had anything serious or worthwhile to say on the subject, he'd be writing regular columns, not satire pieces on a blog, or a weekly pics column.
Tom (4 years ago)
JG78 already came up with better names.

OKC Pig Wrestlers
OKC Cock Fighters
OKC Chaw Spitters

Can you imagine the Logo you could use with each of those?

OSUNDN (4 years ago)
JG78

That is the very reason the Thunder will move in a year or two. BECAUSE THEY STINK!!! I figure the new will start wearing off about mid-season. Then you would have enough room to store a lot of hay in the Ford "BARN"
Don't send them to Claremore, we already have a B-Ball team. Go RSU Hillcats!!

It is so funny to read the posts by the picker and the comments on this board about the Thunder.

It is clear that the rest of the state or at least the central/north/south/west part of the state are very excited about the team.

I think the negative overtones of the picker, his fellow posters and the worlds overall tone towards the Thunder speaks volumes to the denial that the city of Tulsa is in.

Wake up people. Unfortunately, the attitudes shared here are the very reason why Tulsa has not progressed at all the last 20 years.

I have season tickets and have been very impressed by the enthusiasm of the crowds and of people just talking about it around town.

OSUND,
I think you greatly underestimate the city's ability to support events. Not just one time events but reoccuring events. The history speaks for itself. Now, whenever you muster enough courage to step out of your moms basement, put down the pipe, and find a job. Maybe you could save enough cash to venture outside your bubble and see what the rest of the state has to offer.

JG78,

Well said. My thoughts exactly.
cyco myko (4 years ago)
I don't care much for the NBA, but only a fool would say that OKC can't support an NBA team. Didn't they just prove that by supporting the Hornets for two years? Even if they aren't so good right now, they will be playing against the NBA's best. And bad teams do get good draft picks, so it's not like they're going to be bad forever. They've already got some decent talent.
Names I like: Thundercats, Thunderballs or Gods of Thunder.
Sodypoke (4 years ago)
Being raised in OKC and a 8 year Tulsa resident, I can say that I love both cities. OKC has a lot of stuff going for it that Tulsa has failed to produce. Tulsa on the other hand has some natural resources that OKC won't ever have. Tulsa needs to get on bored with the Thunder, stupid name or not, because it is the ONLY top level professional sports action in this state, and probably will remain so for a long time. Tulsa peeps, get over yourself and get with the rest of the Sate and be happy you don't have to drive to Dallas to go to an NBA game now. When was the last time you could drive 1 1/2 hours to see the likes of Kevin Durant play Kevin Garnett. This is good for our state period. Stupid name and all.
