OSU. Texas. The fumble.

I’ve got a regret from coverage of the Oklahoma State-Texas game on Saturday night: Because of tight deadline constraints, I had only enough time to cobble together a game story and not near enough time to do an amateur investigation regarding the fumble on Joe Bergeron’s game-winning touchdown play.

After the for-print version of a game story was finished, I updated a Tulsaworld.com story with quotes from Mike Gundy about the play in question. After the game, Gundy (presumably without benefit of a video replay) said the things you might expect him to say while also staying clear of anything that might be construed as criticizing the officiating.

“Somebody took a look at it and obviously didn’t think it was a fumble,” Gundy said, referring to a replay official reviewing the play.

Video confirms that Bergeron lost the ball. But did he first cross the plane of the goal line?

What did Gundy think about it? “I only know what people told me,” he said. “I’m not commenting on officiating. Our guy said (Bergeron) fumbled and (OSU) got it. That’s why I was running down the sidelines. I didn’t see it because of the pile.”

The "guy" that Gundy was referring to was apparently Daytawion Lowe, who noticed a ball on the ground and scooped it up before showing it to an official.

Gundy surely will have reviewed the controversial play a few times before he talks Sunday night with reporters who cover the team on a regular basis. I’ll ask him what he saw. And then I’ll relay what he said.
