OSU-Mississippi Damage Football
Published: 1/3/2010 1:19 PM
Last Modified: 1/3/2010 1:24 PM

College football history was made Saturday as Oklahoma State and Mississippi played the worst bowl game ever. And you didn't need to have seen all 750,000 bowls that preceded the Cotton to rest assured that a college football game can't get any worse than horrific.

This one was bad slapstick: The Mississippi quarterback couldn't hit the broad side of a redneck; announcer Pat Summerall was plucked from Madama Tussauds Wax Museum and was dusted off and incorrectly called a field goal, a ball carrier, and Oklahoma State's name, which is not Oklahoma; the referees blew a game-changing call against OSU that made the final score fiction; and Oklahoma State continues to run a goal line offense that looks like something out of the pee wee league.

OSU's red zone offense is where the players try to sneak up on the line of scrimmage like a bunch of squirrels after a big acorn, and quick-pitch the defense -- run a line plunge as though the defenders couldn't figure out where all the 300-pounders went. Generally speaking, tip-toeing into a scrum at the goal is not a good idea.

There have been many lousy performances in bowls so far this season: Missouri showing no heart, guts or skills; Houston playing like the chump it is, although numerous ESPN suckers demanded that the Cougar quarterback be on the Heimsan list; South Carolina's Spurrier proving that the game has left him at the 18th green.

But in no bowl have two teams mirrored each other's incompetence.

And, against our advice, still the Oklahoma State coach tries to call the offensive plays.

In case you might not have noticed, OSU has scored 7 points, total, in its last two games.

Be a head coach or call the plays, one of the two -- trying bothing is taking on too much.

This isn't what the Pick (T. Boone) ordered.

wonder how many Cowboy fans were wishing that Coach Nutt was roaming their sideline in place of Gundy?

Agreed Gene.

Gene, all five of the smart ones.

I am amazed at what a negative person you the picker is.  Can we get one good comment on Stoops and a well played Sun Bowl?

Totally agree Picker!  Pathetic game.

Mr. Picker,
Here is a suggestion for OSU's goal-line offense: Line up in the power I-formation with 2-3 tight ends and run the ball right at the other team with either Hunter or Toston. They could also run a play action pass with the TE or WR out of the I-formation.

I thought Pat Summerall was retired. Pat was great in his prime, but is now past his prime and shouldn't have been announcing this game. I thought that The Moose did a fine job of analyzing the game. However, I would've much rather seen Joe Buck and Troy Aikman announce this game.

Don Brown, the Picker is amazed at what negative grammar users you OU fans is.

Don, here's something positive.

I'm positive it was a good thing for OU that the starting Stanford quarterback was out.

He was 87 percent better than the one who played.

Tulsan in Exile,  You are absolutely right.  I guess I should read it before I post it.
Picker, come on, you can do it... just one little tiny good thing tosay that is not sarcastic?    28 to 13 firstdowns? 477 total yards to 262?  Controlling Gerhardt?  Was this all because of the QB?
The Picker (3 years ago)
All right, DB, here we go.

Something uplifting and positive and invigorating and rejuvenating and hopeful and joyful and great about OU's Sun Bowl appearance.Hang on. Give me a second. All right, here it comes.OU doesn't have to face the brilliant Leach any more. KU hired a pushover (Chuck "Third and" Long). OSU was horrendous. And the freshman linebacker for OU was knocking people for a loop.
Tulsan in Exile (3 years ago)
And here's something else positive... OU had no one arrested, shot, or kidnapped in El Paso.  Now that's what I call a great Sun Bowl experience!

Picker, it is a good thing Stanford didn't face OU starting OB.

Dear Mr. Picker,

I for one appreciate your insight- you looked at two bowls and saw them both well stocked with crap.

Question for you sire, which will be the first to see some sort of a flush?

Picker,
Very well done.  I agree with all that was said. I knew you could do it.

40 Plus: The first bowls to go should be all those where the temp is less than 45.DB: Another thing, Broyles is great, one of the best in the country.
40+guy (3 years ago)
Dear Picker,

I will have to disagree with your assessment on bowls going away in places where the temperature is below 45.  These locations almost function as punishment and generally host the lower tier teams, in my opinion they are serving their purpose.  I cite as an example- UCLA being sentenced to D.C. - would have been truly priceless if they had only lost.  :)

Picker nailed it this time.  You have to wonder what the hell is going on with Gundy's offensive decision making and play calling.  To say he is stubborn is putting it WAY to mildly.

The less than half-hearted attempts at offense in the last two games for the Cowboys have been a total insult to the fans and players.  I hope someone makes that clear to Gundy.  I believe he can do a good job at OSU and take the program to a level it has never been to before, but he has got to pull his head out and understand the mistakes he has been making will not get him there.
The Picker (3 years ago)
Here's a resonable question: Is there ANY college head coach who calls plays successfully?
Gene M (3 years ago)
Mr. Picker, that depends on what your meaning of, "is" is?
DontHaveToGuess (3 years ago)
Didn't Leach call plays at Texas Tech ?

That being said, yeah I feel like OSU lost a game in the Cotton Bowl it should've won but for bad calls and stupid mistakes in the Cotton Bowl.  And nothing hurts worse than that.

I don't know if Gundy should continue calling plays or have someone else do it.  He served as the same kind of offensive coordinator for Miles that Gunter Brewer serves as now for him.  Miles called plays too, didn't he ?  But, taking on too much when you could get quality help is not a good thing.
I did think, before the play, that it would have been better to just kick the field goal on that stuffed goal line 4th down play.  I guess they thought the defense would be looking for a pass or something.  Not the worst reasoning.  Still, the vanilla straight-ahead running play basically predictably didn't work.  Basically predictably.  They'd stuffed two straight ahead running plays.  Why was a third straight one going to work ?

OKlahoma State Cowboys. Same old crap just a different year. Not even worth talking about.

I am an orange bleeding osu fan and I have to say I nearly found out I had orange pee running down my pants after reading that.  Funny as heck, don't care who you are.
