OSU Action Figures

It's pretty much official: Oklahoma State athletics combine to form a rich man's toy.

Nobody but an owner fires somebody after two years.

Bad precedent? Sure. Nobody in education fires somebody after two brief years; ever hear of the sanctity of tenure?

But an owner, look at Trump, get out of here, you're fired, and if you don't like it, tell it to the losers on the way out.

You want the hundreds of millions of dollars, or the bad publicity?

As mega-donors have re-defined university proprietorship, so too have big bucks re-defined the post of athletic director.

Athletic director, baloney, the OSU guy is a financial advisor.

Not that there's anything wrong with any of it, beyond rudeness.

You are correct, Picker.

As an OSU fan, I feel the same way. Holder is a puppet who just does what Boone tells him to do.

Sad day for OSU and for our once proud athletic tradition which used to be a "family".

Wonder what Birdwell is doing right now? Laughing at how one moron (Holder) could have achieved the status of Boone's OSU bellboy.

Somebody needs to put out an APB on the athletic director. Where is he, dining at the 19th Hole?

It's time for 20 dozen questions.
Dick (5 years ago)
First, Holder is no fool,he knows what he is doing. If he can get a better coach and fill the seats then that's his job.

Second, Pat Jones has some interesting comments today. He talked about how the Coach to be(Sean) was written into Eddie's contract, and Eddie probably held out signing his last contract until it was put in there. Now as a boss, you know that didn't sit well. Then to add to it Eddie gets drunk and has to leave, your the AD and you have to bring in his son. Probably the same son who knew of the drinking problem and didn't do anything about it. As the AD how would you feel about that situation? Now two years later, two first round NIT loses AND GIA not full.

As a long time OSU fan I hate to see Sean go but down the road it will be the best for everyone involved.

April Fool! Ha-ha, it was all a big joke. Not even someone as arrogant and wrong-headed as me would fire a coach after only two seasons. Only a moron would do something that stupid.

That would be almost as ill-advised as raising football ticket prices so high it would guarantee at least 30,000 empty seats every game.
world picker (5 years ago)
Dick, interesting points.

But I wouldn't get too carried away with coach Pat, as he said he heard Capel to South Carolina was a done deal.

The firing was handled with kid brass knuckles, not kid gloves.

No doubt there will be a blockbuster hire.

Stuff like the Davidson coach is laughable. Did anybody watch the ending of the Davidson game? That guy couldn't get the best shooter in the college game a shot. One-player wonders are wastes of time.

What about Sean? Some mid-level team might fish.

If it's about putting backsides in seats, why is Gundy still on the payroll?

Holder just alienated the OSU faithful at the price of T. Boone's money. I hope he enjoys an empty stadium.

Dick, as an alum, former season ticket holder for basketball(I'm not renewing after this) you are completely wrong. No coach gets fired after two years. It makes it harder to hire a new coach. We aren't going to attract an elite coach like Self or Gillespie and no mid-major coach that is unproven in the major conferences wants a job where he has to get to the tournament in his first two seasons or he's fired. The only types of coaches that go for jobs like these are the Bobby Petrinos of the world. Thank God there aren't any in the world of college basketball right now.

Arthur is right, it's like the Groucho Marx thought: He wouldn't want to work for anybody dumb enough to hire him.

The kind of person this sort of firing/hiring would attract is a little on the seedy side.

Hmmm... Seedy... I got it - Bob Huggins!

"an elite coach like...Gillespie".

OK, that made me laugh.

Least now OSU and ORU can play each year.

Hey Picker - Did you ever get the funny feeling that something wasn't quite right when Sean beat Texas and Kansas when OSU was at the brink of total collapse. I don't pretend to know how paybacks in the coaching world or coaching tree work, but those "wins" always stuck out as odd and obviously didn't hurt either loosing teams fortunes for the rest of the season or playoffs.

AG, I think Sean lost to Texas all three times, though a couple were close.

Losing to OU at home, Senior Night, that wasn't a good idea.

But at least a standard has been set for the next coach -- lose to OU in Stillwater, you're out of here, pal.

world picker (5 years ago)
With all due respect, what if Mr. Pickens doesn't live forever?
JJ (5 years ago)
Regardless Dick brings up a good point. I still say that Sean would have been better equipped to have stepped out on his own, like Scott, & made his own path. He was set up to fail, they always say you dont want to be the man following the man... ask Gary Gibbs.
world picker (5 years ago)
Where else could Sean have made that kind of bread for two years?
AG (5 years ago)
I hope Sean gets paid for his whole contract. Has anybody heard?
world picker (5 years ago)
Sure, he has to get paid for the duration.
world picker (5 years ago)
I guess you guys know what's going to happen next: season basketball ticket prices will quadruple before sunrise!
Arthur (5 years ago)
Picker, I don't usually agree with you but on this one you nailed it.

OSU's new athletic motto: forget loyalty we just want money!
Bob Williams (5 years ago)
HELLO OU FANS. Howard Schenelleberger was given only one year as head football coach before he was given the boot. Sean Sutton, who recruited this team, was given twice as long to prove he could produce an NCAA berth.
Just be one of the top 65. He couldn't.
Steve (5 years ago)
There may be some truth in the statement that Sean Sutton wasn't necessarily Holder's or Pickens' choice so they showed him the door. However their fair haired boy Gundy hasn't done much better. A winning record and attendance isn't really what's important to them. They just can't admit they haven't done much better with the coach they did choose.
EarlConnors (5 years ago)
Bottom line is...this can't help Good-Time Eddie's drinking problem.
Jeff (5 years ago)
First, I think getting rid of Sutton was shady. If they didn't like him, they should have let him hang himself, not pounce on him and open up themselves and the school to ridicule.

Second, there's no way in the world any, ANY, coach currently working the head job at Kansas or Kentucky would leave for another job, save something like UCLA, UNC, or Duke. Look at Indiana; they're hiring Crean from Marquette. They didn't even go after someone like Self, Gillespie, Calhoun, Barnes, or any other coach that is working at a school on the same level. Marquette to Indiana is a step up for Crean. Self or Gillespie to OSU would not be a set up for either man. No disrespect to OSU, but that job right now is not even mentionable in the same breath as the jobs both currently hold. The ONLY way I could see either man entertaining the thought of moving to Stillwater is if their salaries were doubled. I'd have to believe that KU or UK would match any offer OSU could make. Those schools LIVE on basketball. That's not to say OSU doesn't, or shouldn't, but they just aren't there right now.

OSU would be better served to hire their own Bill Self or Billy Gillespie, and make their job as sought after as the ones at KU and UK. Right now, it's just not so.

Thing is, OSU will get some young, energetic, motivated, talented coach looking to make a name for himself at a name school. There's nothing wrong with that. But they won't be getting someone who's already made a name for himself at a name school.

I guess I could be wrong, especially if T. Boone throws in some more skrilla to get who he wants. But it would be better to get someone with a little fewer less credentials than the big dogs. You know, keep 'em lean and mean. Lateral or backward moves by coaches lead one to believe there was some underlying reason they would leave. Make a splash by hiring someone moving up, and the reward will be much greater.

OSU fan, in your eyes (most of your eyes, anyway), it can't get much worse than two straight NIT first round losses. You probably figure ANY old joe could do that. If that's the case, be happy when they hire a less-decorated, but more eager joe than the superstar divas like Self or Gillespie.
Mack (5 years ago)
Hey Mr. Picker. Ever hear of Frank Broyles at Ark U. He fires them in the middle of a season.
