OSU: Get Your Guts Up
Published: 8/24/2007 1:29 PM

For almost forever and a day, Oklahoma State has seemed content to defeat OU at football every 11 years, and play the Sooners close every couple or three years, finish 6-5 or 7-5 and go to a dippy bowl, killing time until basketball season.

Just this morning, we heard one of those sports talk radio preachers say most Oklahoma State fans were probably thrilled to see the Cowboys were "only" a seven-point underdog at Georgia; and if that OSU had a chance to win, and lost, well, there were worse things.

What garbage.

Enough of the average mentality.

OSU has talked a good game, and spent a good game, on world class facilities. So now it's time to play a good game. Georgia offers the ideal situation. It is good, not great. It is in a fancy conference that scores touchdowns only as a last resort.

The home field advantage is frequently over-blown. Usually, the best players who are coached well, win.
OSU probably has more NFL types than Georgia.
The Cowboys are not without questions. The starting quarterback was sent to his room, the OU game. The defense hasn't hit a lick. OSU's road record resembles Little Miss Sunshine's.

All this talk about the next level. Well, there it is. You want it?

I like it. Have you sent this in email to coach Gundy to use in his pregame speech?

It's time for OSU to finish games that they lead by over 20 at the half. This comes down to believing you can beat the better team in the other locker room. OSU has pulled it off against OU because it wants to beat OU badly. It's time for the Pokes to resemble the college football powers (USC, Texas, LSU, Ohio St., Florida, Mich, OU, etc., etc.) by wanting to win every game badly when you step on the field...and then believe you can do it (this is the hard part).

Top to bottom, I'll disagree with your assumption that OSU has the same talent as Georgia. It's not a mismatch by any stretch of the imagination, and the gap is not that big, but Georgia is probably more talented as a whole. Your take is clear and accurate though...OSu must learn to beat the big boys consistently to take the next step.

Forgive me. I reread your post...you never said OSU was as talented as Georgia. You did state that good players that are coached well can go win on the road when they are only a 7 point dog. The low number says that the teams aren't a universe apart in talent.

It's not the best team that wins all the time (though most of the time)...it's the best team ON THAT DAY. The best horse in a race can run into traffic trouble or have an off day. Same with a football team in my opinion. The Pokes will have to play well and be coached well to win in Athens.

Jeremy: I'll bet you a Wild Fork cheeseburger that OSU has more NFL players on this team than Georgia.

It's all baloney: Georgia used to be good. So it should be good now. Bull.

Jeremy: What better talent does Georgia have? Who says? OSU has had some great recruiting years. I'm telling you, it's a mindset that has to stop somewhere.

Georgia lost to Vanderbilt last year and was lucky to beat Colorado 14-13. The quarterback is an interception machine.

Hopefully the team is ready to end the same-old, same-old mentality.

Until OSU actually wins on the road against a quality opponent no one will believe. I think what Jeremy is saying is that Georgia is deeper across the board. That Georgia's backups are better etc. I am sure that is true. I also dont think that Stafford was the QB in that Colorado game. OSU will not even cover.

What about this new site?
WORLDPICKER (5 years ago)
Let's see, wasn't OSU one micro-second and about two inches away from winning a road game at mighty OU last year?
WORLDPICKER (5 years ago)
And one more thing, JJ: What was the excuse when Georgia lost to Vandy?

And why did the Georgia quarterback throw twice as many interceptions as touchdowns?

WORLDPICKER (5 years ago)
So last year's OSU game with OU was in Stillwater. So what.

I still think OSU is as good as Georgia, and that previous road histories with DIFFERENT players and DIFFERENT coaches is no factor.

Thank you for calling it like it is.

I appreciate it.

Never claimed to be a Georgia expert, but a quick check on stats on a website shows that Stafford threw ZERO picks, Tershenski (whatever it is) also threw no picks, but rather UGA defense gave up 65 yds on vandys last posession to allow a 33 yd field goal as time expired. Maybe OSU will have some luck...

06 kstate, houston, tech & texas road losses, but hey you beat kansas on the road.
05 bad road losses at A &M, Iowa State & mighty BAYLOR before the butt whipping in Norman.

ALL LOSSES ON ROAD, ALL UNDER HEAD CLOWN er COACH GUNDY.

THAT IS THE RECORD THEY ARE TAKING TO GEORGIA. Sharpen up before you shoot off your mouth. It takes a coupe of keystrokes to look up.

1st game - Okla St vs Gerogia
You can bet that the Bulldogs will take that game by 25 points I really do not think that the cowboys can't win there first game

USC VS NEBRASKA
I would like a Nebraska beat USC

Andy, so your taking Georgia and giving 24. Please send your email address I think I have found someone to take the points. How much did you have in mind?

Were you meaning "their" when you wrote "there".
AJ (5 years ago)
More NFL players? That may be correct this year because of the amount of upperclassmen. Georgia is an extremely young team, but the seniors they have will be on NFL rosters next year. Good recruiting...might want to check your sources I think they got you there to.
wigem01 (5 years ago)
You've stated the historic OSU problem succinctly, picker. Stop choking against beatable teams. It IS a mindset, but history shows that it is and has been OSU's mindset for decades. But simply beating one good team on the road won't change it (remember when OSU beat Texas A&M in Kyle over ten years ago...they've beaten Oklahoma in Norman this decade...and they still stumble and struggle with their self-esteem). So, can they beat Georgia? Sure. Colorado, a very poor team last year, nearly did it in Athens. But they won't win, and probably won't cover, either. Why? 'Cause they don't believe that they can play with a top-tier SEC team.

..and also because Gumby constantly looks like the first guy to see the monster and get axed in any 1950s horror movie. Not HC material.

WIGEMO2, stop being a little man. I know you want my hair.

OSU-GA will be close. If it gets away from either team, it'll be late. I think GA wins a close one...not sure which side of the line I'm on yet...
Yoda (5 years ago)
A. Bowman is going to light up the GA defense. Toston and Savage will balance out the O. If State's D can hold up their end of the game, OSU will be victorious. I can't wait for Saturday so we can move on with our lives.
WORLDPICKER (5 years ago)
JJ: What stats are you looking at? The Georgia quarterback was almost banished to the frat league early last year. He was almost 2-1 picks over touchdowns.

Wigemo1: It's like since Georgia was good with Hershel Walker, some OSU fans think that makes Ga 14 better today! I have never, ever, seen a mindset like it. Expecting to win is good. Being sad or even mad about losing is normal. The one problem I have is the quarterback. If they don't trust him to play at OU, that could indeed be trouble.

jj (5 years ago)
PICKER:

The game stats for the Vandy game, that was the game you wanted Georgia's excuse for losing.... sorry had to remind you what your original question was. Clearly no rebuttal to the pathetic Mike Gundy led road record.... as in "not the same coaches, not the same players" quote you had.
jj (5 years ago)
Bottom line a mid level SEC team will beat an average to below average Big 12 team. Let alone that they are the home team against a team who chokes on the road. Who was that OSU beat on the road? Kansas?
WORLDPICKER (5 years ago)
JJ: If OSU had Sanders running and Gundy quarterbacking and big Leslie playing defensive end, OSU people would say: We have no chance against Georgia!

I'm telling you, JJ, and everybody else in eye and ear range, OSU is as good as Georgia. But the negative mindset is a powerful force, all right.....

Last time I saw, Stoolwater Community College was horrible defensively. Sure the offense is potent. I guess it's a good thing to average 38 points a game. Of course, that is unless you average giving up 43 points a game. T-Bone can throw all the money he has at that toilet of a stadium, and the football program. They can't sell out their current half a stadium, so go ahead and expand it. It goes like this: You can take a pig, put a dress on it, some fancy jewlery, but what do you have in the end? A pig. Welcome to Stoolwater Community College football. At best, they finish third in the South. In a perfect world, they'd finish last.
