OSU Is Number One (in Oklahoma Anyway)
Published: 2/25/2008 5:27 PM

Oklahoma State is the best basketball team in Oklahoma.

When OU goes to Stillwater soon, the Cowboys will win in a breeze.

Those who wanted Sean Sutton fired should immediately have their heads examined. All the close-game losses suggested to those with any sense at all that this team was close to being decent.

The early-season RPI stinks and will probably keep OSU out of the NCAA tournament.

Late season games should count for twice as much.

If OU is an NCAA tournament team, then we don't know much about basketball. If the Sooners go to the square dance, pack light, that's our advice.

The Tennessee coach showed the nation how you win when you're ahead three points with the other team going for the last shot. YOU FOUL! And win every single time.

Our tournament long shot bracket picks are: Michigan State, Ucon.

Are you being condescending? Did ORU not hammer OSU on a neutral court? Not to mention, when healthy OU is hands down the best team in this state. And I am neither an ORU, OSU, or OU fan (what does that leave?). What will keep OSU out of the tournament is playing bad basketball for 3/4 of the season. My goodness Mr. Picker, maybe you know a little about football but clearly basketball isn't your thing. OSU has had a nice stretch, they will come down to earth, they aren't strong enough inside to continue to play at this level. As we have seen, when the shots aren't falling they aren't real good.

OSU Fan in Tulsa (5 years ago)
And when the Paris brothers aren't fouling, OU women aren't "real good." But that's neither here nor there.

OSU is playing their hearts out right now. Thanks in large part to Byron Eaton's stellar play, it's like a light has finally come on for our guys. Unfortunately, I agree with the Fighting Wojciks basketball fan: it is most likely too late for any hopes of OSU going dancing.

By the way, OU can be as healthy as possible, and OSU will STILL wipe the floor with them when the landthieves come to town. Book it.
Blair (5 years ago)
OU has much of the same problems, I have never been completely sold on Eaton and until he develops consistency from game to game, I am not going to be. Here is where OU is miles ahead: Interior play. When both Griffin and Longar are healthy, they are dominant inside threats. OU can beat anyone when its guards make shots, but they are vulnerable when don't because teams collapse inside. OU will make it very difficult for OSU to score inside, and OU will have its way inside offensively. Griffin owned the first time through, it will be a tough battle but OSU being at home give the advantage.

I can look at these teams objectively, I think it is clear that OU is the best team in the state. They have had the better, more consistent season over OSU and ORU. ORU is better than OSU. They are stronger at guard and they are stronger inside. I don't think the gap between ORU and OU is very wide, but I do think OU presents some serious problems for them inside. On the other side, I think ORU is more consistent at guard.

ORU and OU play 10 times on a neutral court, ORU wins 7. No way OU could have hung with that Creighton team on Saturday.

To Picker, everyone and everything is overrated. Everyone stinks. Only he knows the smartest strategy. Good teams always win by 30; anything less and they stink. The Big 12 is overrated. How else could it have an overrated team in first place?
Rhett (5 years ago)
Common, now - usually I enjoy your takes, but OSU better than ORU? THEY'VE ACTUALLY PLAYED EACH OTHER: ORU 74, OSU 59, in Oklahoma City at the All-College Tournament. And it wasn't that close - ORU was up by double digits the entire game! How can you just dismiss head-to-head competition in favor of the same old "bigger is better" argument?
Matthew (5 years ago)
Uh oh Picker, you've offended the City of Tulsa homers. Prepare the feel the wrath of years of pent up bitterness and insecurity.

Uconn. a longshot? Pretty salty to be a longshot.

The ORU/OSU neutral site game was never even close.

Agree the OSU is playing better ball. However, before we break our arms patting them on the back, remember that they have just recently emerged with their first road victory in over a season. Encouraging to be sure, but I wouldnt feel so confident labeling them 'best team in the state.' They string together a great road win and a great home win against KU.

in the words of peter griffin, "settle down spaz."
John (5 years ago)
Not to make excuses for OSU, but that ORU game was played when they just weren't very good. If there was a rematch today, it would be much closer. And the reason OSU is playing better is because they stopped jacking up 30 3s a game and started shooting higher percentage shots.
Wayman (5 years ago)
It is amazing how much time and agony osu fans put into hating OU. It is such a defeatist attitude. The problem is there is alot of angst over the fact that OU folks just dont consider the punchers as big a rivalry as they do the Sooners. Let's face it, even though osu frequently beats OU in various sports, it's still jv and the varsity. Check out the campuses.
Aalan (5 years ago)
It seems that WAYMAN is just like many other soon fans. Never went to OU for anything other than a sporting event. Any sooner that went to OU for education realizes that OSU is a worthy adversary, just maybe not with the clout as Texas. However, most Texas fans hate A&M fans more than OU fans... this being said from a graduate of UT. No one will ever be happy and if OSU is not worth the time why must WAYMAN still refer to OSU as jv and bring himself to the level he already said was not time worthy?
Matthew (5 years ago)
Oklahoma State is going to match up with some teams better than others. The biggest reason for that is their lack of depth in the post. In the Bedlam game in Norman, OU repeatedly pounded the ball inside, got OSU's post men in trouble, and that is what won OU the game. I figured Kansas would do the exact same thing down the stretch in Stillwater, and they did and nearly won. What cost Kansas the game was committing absolutely moronic fouls 30+ feet from the basket in the final couple of minutes. I swear KU gifted OSU about 5 points from the line in the last couple of minutes due to just completely stupid fouls. That's not to take anything away from OSU. Sutton has them playing at a high level right now. Eaton his finally "figured it out", and that should be scary to a lot of teams.
Mark V (5 years ago)
OSU vs. OU? I'll pick OSU, too. Matthew is right: It's all about match-ups. College b-ball is dominated by guard play, and OSU's guards are superior to OU's.

Case in point: Texas beat KSU convincingly. Augustin's team beat Beasley's. Why? Guard play. Big men can't score if they can't get the ball into the post.

Last: OU barely beat OSU in Norman this year. The GIA advantage means OSU wins by 9 points.
Matthew (5 years ago)
You are correct sir. College basketball is largely about guard play. Not to say that having a scoring presence in the post isn't important, but when you have a guard like Eaton that can repeatedly get to the hoop and either get fouled or kick to open shooters, you are going to be a dangerous team. OSU's lack of post presence definitely hurts them, and limits their "ceiling", but if they can zone it up and keep their bigs from fouling out they can offset that a bit.

Here's what the first of the season has to do with the last of the season: nothing much.

Even the secretive NCAA selection committee has said that this year, much more weight will be given to the last ten or 15 games.

Some of the players (and coaches) that played key roles early aren't even around now.

One team I just might have read incorrectly is Texas. I thought Texas was overrated, a bunch of gunners who would lose if the threes weren't falling. The inside guys might better than first thought.

This is almost an apology for blasting Texas.

But not quite.

MIKE (5 years ago)
Blair, you sir, need to get rid of the hypothetical and stick to actuality. Yes, OU beat OSU in Norman. But it was only by 3 points! How was that dominant? Yes, the Griffin brothers were dominant inside but in the end, OSU STILL only lost by 3 points. If OSU hits their free throws that game, they win despite the inside dominance of Blake or Longar! By the way, do you really think if OSU played ORU today that the outcome would be the same? I strongly doubt it. By the way, OSU didn't beat KU or aTm with stellar shooting("when their shots aren't falling they aren't real good"). In fact, both games their FG % was in the high 30s to low 40s. They beat them with great defense ESPECIALLY in the post. Check the stats before you make such ridiculous comments.
Andrew (5 years ago)
Just a correction to #1, in that game OSU DID make all their free throws, 17/17. OU however only made 23/36, so in actuality if OU makes their free throws then its not even close. And Picker, you have lost all credibility as a sports prognosticator ever since that whole picking Michigan to win the football nat'l championship thing. Its a good thing you are somewhat humorous or you'd be gone son.
WORLDPICKER (5 years ago)
Somewhat humorous, Andrew? That is like saying Stoopsie is somewhat rich.

The OU freshman basketball player needs to get a shot.

The Spurs are different than dunking on Iowa State.
MIKE (5 years ago)
Good call, Andrew. I was thinking of a different game. My fault.
Wayman (5 years ago)
AM AALAN (WHATEVER THAT IS): Pretty sure the college degree on the wall in my office says University of Oklahoma on it and osu is not a worthy adversary academically to OU except maybe in agriculture.
MIKE (5 years ago)
Wayman, while I'm sure that you do indeed have an OU diploma hanging in your office at the Used Chevy Car Lot, you apparently have no clue of the differences in academia between the two state universities. OU does have a great medical program and you are correct, OSU has a fine agricultural program. But what your feeble mind seems to ignore is that OSU also excels in their Architecture program along with every facet of their Engineering program. Do your research before making such gross stereotypes.

PLEASE do not feed me this junk about "OSU wasn't playing well when they played ORU, if they played now OSU would win, the last 15 games mean more," blah, blah, blah. You think ORU hasn't improved the last few weeks, either? If that argument is true, OU-Texas or Tennessee-Florida in football shouldn't mean a thing, either, because they're played in October. YOU PLAY THE GAMES WHEN THEY'RE SCHEDULED! November and December are the only time mid-majors can get BCS schools to play them - ORU was ready to play then, why not the Cowboys? The last time I checked, the RPI for basketball was not weighted in any way for WHEN you play your games, just if you win them or not, regardless of whether your team is playing it's best, or has injuries, or travel problems, or finals, etc. IT'S PART OF THE GAME! Tell you what - you figure out some way for OSU and ORU to play in March (NIT?), and ORU would STILL beat 'em by 10...

Should we tell Wayman the OU Graduate what AM means? I guess they skipped telling time in all those high powered OU degree courses.
Arthur (5 years ago)
Maybe Wayman just didn't notice it next to his own name. Classic. Maybe someone should tell him that when research is considered in any sort of college ranking that OSU beats OU. OU has experts in more non-research fields and OSU dominates research (I know that is a gross generalization and OU has some phenomenal researchers in Archeaology, but I don't think a listing of who wins what category is necessary). Go Pokes. As a side note: it is true that OSU made all of their free throws, I wouldn't expect much different in the next game, but OU had more than double the free throws(I really don't want to hear that it's because OSU recruits thugs and dirty players OU has had its share just the same). If OSU gets to the line and plays inside defense without fouling, then OSU wins.
WORLDPICKER (5 years ago)
Now what do you anti-OSU characters think?

The team is playing 34 percent better than one month ago.

Speaking of picks, they're harder to make before the games are played. We're having a big NCAA bracket contest here at the newspaper. You Hindsight Specialists be sure and enter and then we'll see who is the last one yapping.

While some sadsacks continue to refer to some previous football action, the Picks had Colorado versus OU.
