OSU, Karron Johnson parting company
Published: 2/19/2011 11:08 PM

Oklahoma State's heralded two-player early signing class is down to one.

McDonald's All-American LeBryan Nash of Lincoln High School in Dallas is still on board.

But coach Travis Ford confirmed late Saturday night that Karron Johnson -- who had been ranked as the top junior college player in the country before getting dismissed from his Midland (Texas) Junior College team -- and the Cowboys have parted company.

“He won’t be here,” Ford said. “That’s all I want to say about it.”

Johnson would have come with baggage. He is much-traveled and has a history of behavioral issues.

Johnson signed a letter of intent with OSU, but Ford said Johnson “can go wherever he wants to go.”

I interviewed Johnson a couple of years ago and, in a face-to-face setting, he was polite and candid. During the interview, he told me that, when he was a child, his father was murdered.

Johnson indicated that the tragic loss of his father may have led to him having issues with male authority figures throughout the remainder of his childhood and young adulthood. I hope the kid has a good life, wherever he lands next.

Take a chance on someone with behavioral issues and a problem with authority? Give someone a second chance? Will he be a blessing or a curse to the school? It is awfully hard to forecast the future of these talented players without a Magic 8-Ball. I don't envy college coaches who have to tie their careers to these kids.

Sounds like he's bought in to the liberal excuse as to why his behavioral issues are not his fault. "My dad was murdered when I was a kid and now I have a problem with male authority figures so I can act like an idiot and not be held accountable." Get real! Be a man and stop being a stereotype!

A boy named Karron was bound to have a tough time. Johnny Cash would have written a song about it but more things rhyme with Sue.

I don't think OSU can afford to be sloppy in basketball recruiting. Coach Ford is already walking a thin line right now.

Eddie Sutton took a chance on Jameson Curry and it worked out pretty well, but Travis Ford is no Eddie Sutton. Why borrow trouble?

Karron Johnson was no JamesOn Curry.

The KJ kid has bounced around all over the place, creating havoc and leaving behavioral issues in his wake.

It doesn't sound like that's going to end any time soon.

The kid is mentally messed up. Whether it WAS due to his father being murdered, which I'm sure didn't help, he has yet to be rehabilitated in any of his previous stops.

Travis Ford is not a therapist. Eddie Sutton did about the best with rag tag players as any coach, too.

But this Johnson kid is bad news.
Good luck to him, but he won't be OSU's problem anymore.

I hope this young man seeks help and gets it.

My question is either: what took so long to cut ties or why were they recruiting him in the first place. Looked like trouble even before this last suspension.

Congratulations for Ford and his smart decision to not give this thug a scholly. Ford cannot control his current players, no sense in asking for trouble.

I'm not sure this was Ford's choice.

Didn't I hear -- maybe on a telecast -- that KJ had to pass 28 hours this spring/summer just to eligible next fall?

If the kid found himself in that hole, digging out of it to the tune of 28 hours in a semester-and-a-half isn't very likely.

you may be right FREEDROP Ford does not seem to care about his players being thugs
