Zac Robinson is thrown to the turf by Texas' Keenan Robinson in 2009. Tulsa World file Adam Barnes is about to dine on a steak dinner.
Oklahoma State’s director of sales and marketing, Barnes was the only member of the university staff to predict a total of 48,000 for football season-ticket sales.
As of Tuesday, Barnes’ prediction became reality. At the end of the business day, the total stood at 48,006. As a reward, athletic director Mike Holder had promised a steak feast for Barnes.
The 48,006 figure is significant because the seating capacity of old Lewis Field was 48,000. OSU now has sold more season tickets than there were seats at the pre-renovation stadium.
“Adam Barnes is the only guy who will step out there and make a prediction,” Holder said in August. “ . . . He went out there on a limb with a big prediction.”
OSU now has broken school records both for overall season-ticket sales and for student season-ticket sales. The current student total is 11,950. The old records of 45,952 overall and 11,385 on student sales were set in 2009.
Before 2009, OSU had never reached the 40,000 mark in season-ticket sales.
Current ticket-sales data indicates that for the Oct. 8, non-televised Kansas game, there could be a crowd in excess of 57,000. If the attendance is 57,000-plus, it would be the second-largest crowd in program history. The attendance record is 58,516, set for the 2009 Texas game. No. 2 on the list is 56,901 for the 2009 Grambling State contest.
