OSU opponent too 'nice" in bowl last season?

No more Mr. Nice Guy for Arizona coach Mike Stoops?

Having been around Stoops on only a limited basis, I can’t vouch for whether he is a sweetheart or a meanie. But check out Arizona safety Cam Nelson’s comments after the Wildcats were beaten 33-0 by Nebraska in the Holiday Bowl last season.

Nelson said many of his teammates were just happy to be at a bowl and added, “All week, coach Stoops tried to be nice and a lot of guys took advantage of it. That caused us to play the way we did.”

Stoops was asked during a pre-Alamo Bowl press conference Tuesday if he notices a difference in his team’s pre-bowl focus this year.

“We seem to be much more focused on some of the details of the preparation,” he said.

“From my vantage point, I see a difference in our attitude and our practices and hopefully that will carry over to tomorrow night. A lot happened a year ago. I hope we learned from some of our mistakes, which you do as you get older. Bowl experiences, I think you evaluate each one. What’s the good part and the bad part?

“Certainly there was a lot of bad in all the stuff we did leading up to (the Holiday Bowl). I just feel we understand what kind of game this is going to be and getting embarrassed a year ago was a tough feeling for us. Not competing, that’s not what our program is about. This is a team that has competed since day one when we took over this program. So I look for us to compete in a lot better way tomorrow night.”
