Oklahoma State basketball signee Markel Brown of Peabody Magnet School in Alexandria, La., has been named “Mister Basketball” in Lousiana.
The award, presented by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association, is given annually to the top high school basketball player in the state.
Brown averaged 32 points, eight rebounds, three steals and three blocks for a 41-0 state championship team this season. He previously was chosen Class 4A player of the year by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.
Peabody Magnet School coach Charles Smith told the Alexandria, La., newspaper that Brown is the best player he has coached, and that includes former Tulane player Paul Thompson, who played three seasons in the NBA.
“I was an assistant coach when Paul played and he was a tremendous player, a tremendous competitor, a great athlete, shot the ball well and could jump exceptionally well,” Smith told the newspaper.
“But he couldn’t put the ball on the floor very well. Markel is a great competitor and can jump and score, but the big difference is his ball handling. Markel could easily play point guard, whereas Paul could play the 3 position.”
