OSU start hard to read

It is difficult to know how much confidence we should have in Oklahoma State's good start to the season.

Sure, the Cowboys look far better than they did a year ago when they stumbled out of the blocks with three victories against overmatched opponents.

Again, the Cowboys are facing opponents who are not capable in talent of hanging with a Big 12 opponent such as OSU.

Still, considering how poorly State played at the start of last year, this year's start has to be encouraging.

There's no need for OSU fans to run out and buy Big 12 Championship Game tickets. Yet, there is reason for OSU fans to believe things will be better this year.

Last year the struggles against the non-conference schedule was a preview of the season. Once OSU got into the Big 12 season it was often overwhelmed. State was not prepared and not organized enough to be competitive against anyone in that league.

Yes, OSU did beat Texas Tech (when the Cowboys tried to give it away) and it had chances to win a couple of other Big 12 games.

Still, considering this was a program that had gone to three straight bowl it was a far fall.

The Cowboys should win again this week and then the real season begins.

OSU, after Florida Atllantic, has Houston, Kansas State and Kansas on the road. A successful road trip and the Cowboys will be headed to a bowl with a renewed enthusiasm about the coach Mike Gundy era.

There's still plenty of season ahead. But at this point the outlook isn't nearly as bleak as it was a year ago.
