OSU vs. Louisiana-Lafayette: television information

Saturday’s Oklahoma State football opener, matching the ninth-ranked Cowboys and Louisiana-Lafayette at 6 p.m. in Stillwater, is televised by Fox College Sports.

Fox College Sports is not available to subscribers of Cox Communications cable or Dish Network. It is available on satellite provider DirecTV channel 617 and Suddenlink cable’s digital package.

It is believed that the telecast will be available in fewer than 50,000 Oklahoma households.

This seems like an unfair business practice to me. I understand that OSU gets a kickback from Fox College Sport from this, but I think FCS has gotten to big for its britches. Last year, blocked their service to Dish Network in the middle of the season. FCS has a habit of participating in what I believe to be monopolistic practices. I think OSU should ditch the major networks and hire their own programmers to setup a web farm to stream games over the internet directly to their fans for a reasonable fee. I think it is time for OSU to bump the middle man.

Tulsa World Sports Writer Jimmie Tramel is a former class president at Locust Grove High School. He graduated magna cum laude from Northeastern State University with a journalism degree and, while attending college, was sports editor of the Pryor Daily Times. He joined the Tulsa World on Oct. 17, 1989, the same day an earthquake struck the World Series. In 2007, he wrote a book about Oklahoma State football with former Cowboy coach Pat Jones.
