The Houston Chronicle reports that Joe DeForest, Oklahoma State’s associate head coach and special-teams coordinator, has interviewed for the University of Houston’s head-coaching position.
DeForest, 46, has been on OSU’s staff since 2001 (Les Miles’ first season as the Cowboy head man). DeForest also coaches OSU safeties. Also having interviewed for the Houston job, according to the Chronicle, were two Cougar assistants – interim head coach and special-teams coordinator Tony Levine and offensive coordinator Jason Phillips.
DeForest’s work has been instrumental in Oklahoma State’s recruiting success in the Houston area and along the Texas Gulf Coast. Last year, he was a finalist for the head-coaching position at Louisiana-Lafayette (his alma mater).
“Oklahoma State has the best kicking game in the league, year in and year out,” Texas coach Mack Brown said in 2008. “Joe DeForest does a great job. Not a good job. A great job.”
DeForest makes $400,000 annually at Oklahoma State, as does each of two other coordinators – Bill Young on defense and Todd Monken on offense.
