OSU's facility upgrades more important now than ever before

It was done out of necessity, of course. Old Gallagher-Iba Arena, while venerable and a tremendous home venue for the basketball Cowboys, was too small and was showing signs of old age. Lewis Field was a rusted eyesore – a sub-standard football facility.
When Oklahoma State renovated the arena and the stadium (spending a combined total of more than $330 million), the Cowboy facilities were at least as good as most in Division I-A. What those upgrades accomplish now are to sustain OSU's viability during a period of uncertainty. No one can state with any certainty whether the Big 12 is doomed, or whether OSU is headed to the Pac-10.
But because the university achieved such a comprehensive upgrade of its revenue-generating facilities, OSU appears to be a viable commodity – no matter what happens.
