OSU's mountain men

Who belongs on the “Mount Rushmore” of Oklahoma State basketball players?

Here's my opinion: Reserve a space for James Anderson’s face, right there alongside the faces of Bob Kurland, Bryant Reeves and Byron Houston.

I was leaning in Anderson’s direction anyway, then came a bolt from the cyber blue that helped push me over the edge.

The United States Basketball Writers Association of America sent out e-mails Tuesday in which Anderson was announced as one of 16 national player of the year finalists.

If you’re a national player of the year candidate, you’re probably going to make some All-America lists, which means Anderson will have a college resume similar to resumes crafted by recent OSU All-Americans/Rushmore candidates like Desmond Mason, Tony Allen and Joey Graham. Who’s better? It’s tough to say, but it’s hard to argue with Anderson owning the second-best career-scoring average in school history.

Anderson also is the nation’s fifth-leading scorer. Imagine how many points he might be scoring if he was selfish.

Coach Travis Ford said he thinks Anderson “feels bad” about scoring sometimes. Ford said Anderson worries whether he is taking too many shots.

“And I really think he feels that way at times because he wants so much for his teammates and he doesn’t necessarily want the spotlight,” the coach said.

Ford said you won’t find as many “star” players as humble as Anderson. Since Anderson won’t promote himself, someone will have to do it for him. Go ahead and promote him all the way to Rushmore.
