OSU's spring scrimmages; Fedora's first class at Southern Miss

* Oklahoma State's spring-football practice period begins on Monday, March 3. It should come as no surprise that coach Mike Gundy, always apparently concerned about the surveillance of spies, has closed 12 of the 15 sessions to fans and media members.

Fans can watch three Cowboy scrimmages: March 14 at 1:30 p.m., March 28 at 3:30 p.m., and the April 12 Orange-White game at 4 p.m.

* As the new head coach at Southern Miss, Larry Fedora scrambled to piece together his first recruiting class. The former OSU offensive coordinator wound up attracting a nice class -- ranked 37th nationally by Rivals.com -- to Southern Miss.

Fedora's most prominent recruit was a 6-foot-6 wide receiver, DeAndre Brown of Ocean Springs, Miss., who had been rated by Rivals as a five-star prospect. Seventeen of Southern Miss' 27 signed players had a rating of at least three stars.

By far, the Golden Eagle class is rated as Conference USA's best. Rivals ranks Central Florida's class at No. 56 nationally, Marshall's No. 68 and Tulsa's No. 73.

Considering Southern Miss' recent history in recruiting, Fedora hit a home run. In 2007, the Golden Eagle class was ranked 55th. In 2006, 58th. Southern Miss' classes were ranked 79th in 2005, 67th in 2004 and 79th in 2003.
