OU: Blaster or Disaster?

Unless OU's defense gets a whole lot better, fast, the season could turn into a doomsday scenario, with the Sooners losing to arch rivals Texas AND Oklahoma State; and after that, who knows what might happen in a secondary bowl.
The problem with OU's defense is that it appears to think too much. It is considering the situation as opponents zoom past.
The Mike Stoops defense at lowly Arizona appears better than OU's.
How bad can OU's defense be? As good as its offense is.
At the moment, OU-Oklahoma State would probably be around a pick-em game.
The mere thought of OU's kick coverage game against OSU's return rockets should make Sooner fans wonder what the assistants are doing to earn their fancy keep.
OSU played great at Texas, save for the bad fourth-down call: get the stinking pass past the line of scrimmage, OK?
OSU lost 14 points to a fumble and a penalty.
The Cowboy runner is getting special fast.
Despite what some local TV authority said, TU did an excellent job on national TV verus Central Florida.
A guy working for Channel 6 gave TU these grades: A "C" on offense and a "B-minus" overall.
Score 49 against a good defense and get a "C?"
Please.
That earns Channel 6 sports a "Flying F-triple minus."
In somewhat shocking news, TU opened as an eight and a half point favorite at Arkansas.
Granted, Arkansas is lousy. But don't the refs still wear those plastic hats?
If this game doesn't wind up on TV, somebody should be arrested.

You know what Pick?? I happened to see that same thing last night when I got home from the TU game.
Really all you can do is laugh...sure, you can laugh at the sheer lack of knowledge, but the really funny thing is that those guys take themselves and their grading so seriously as if the entire state is on pins and needles waiting to see if the state teams "passed" the homer test!!
I also got a kick out of Blevins telling Holcombe that "your team" should score 60 this weekend. Your team was of course making reference to OSU because Holcombe is an employee of the school.
You've gotta love unbiased journalism, it's great isn't it!! If those guys knew just an eighth as much football as they think they know then they would be very knowledgeable observers! With apologies to Mike Gundy, that show makes me wanna puke! It's a shame when ESPN does a better job of covering TU football than a local station does. Look, I already expect better OU coverage from ESPN...the Sooners have been a national power forever and quite honestly, you get much better and more importantly more factual, quality info from ESPN than any of the locals regarding OU. However, I always thought I would need the locals for a look at TU, but as long as Tulsa stays in the polls, you will get more from ESPN. Channel 6 has made a joke out of local sports coverage...they could easily change the name of the sports portion of their newscast to the OSU sports minute or something to that effect. It is truly amazing how unbalanced their coverage is, but I guess that's what happens when an OSU employee is your sports guy.

RR, as an OSU fan I can absolutely feel your pain. It hasn't always been like this for OSU as far as coverage goes. I wish I could tell you that I would like it more balanced for TU but honestly, I really love all the attention our football team is getting. I'm sure you'd feel the same way if TU was in the limelight as well.
The only thing I have noticed about TU that might hurt them is that they have trouble putting together a solid four quarters (i.e. UTEP, SMU, and most recently UCF). I know that Arkansas is bad but if TU lets them hang around, they may make a game of it. Good luck!

So they can park in the handicapped spaces.

That may be the lamed joke I have ever heard. I hope you didn't make that terrible thing up.
What a loser.

I will start off by saying that I am an OSU fan. I agree that TU should be getting equal coverage from the local media. I know what it is like when your team is barely mentioned or they sound like they are just reading a box score.
I have watched all three teams this year and have been impressed with all three. I won't even try to say where TU should rank in the three, will be able to do that after this weekend at Arkansas. And here is where I piss off the Sooner nation. OSU is above OU this year. In my opinion after watching both teams multiple times this season OSU just looks like the more complete team than OU. Yes OU can pass the pig skin, but can they run it consistently? How has the special teams played so far? In a game facing a potent offense can they run the ball and manage the clock to get a win, no i.e. Texas. OSU is just more balanced through out the whole game. Offense can run and pass, defense is much improved ranking around 47th in the nation, and I don't think I have to mention special teams. One team is dismal on special teams and the other is rock solid on special teams. I know I shouldn't look ahead, but I can't wait for Bedlam. It will be a good game with OSU coming out on top.

OSU by three touchdowns over OU. OSU will have at LEAST one run back for a T.D. against OU!
Should be fun for our family to go to Fayettevile this Saturday - TU will get another "W" on their way to 14-0!

Cyco
Pickens is giving more money to OSU because of the amount that was lost in the hedge fund. The money was taken out of the fund and put into a regular bank account. Over the last few months the fund had lost over 200 million. He is just trying to replace some of what was lost.

I see where someone is making an early pick of OSU by "three touchdowns" over OU in this year's Bedlam game. That got me to wondering, "How many times has OSU beaten OU by 18 or more points?'
The answer: three times - 1997, 1945, and 1944.
Although it's way too soon to do this, and since some of you are, I'll throw this out there...if the game is in Norman, the result is much like last year's score, which was similar to 2005 and 2003. Since it's in Stillwater, I'll say the score will be much like it's been the last three times the game was there: 27-21 OU, 35-38 OU, and 38-28 OSU. While 2002 was not close for much of the game, the score spread ended up only 10 points. I would expect a score of around that figure, either way.
Even though OSU is good this year, they may finally enter this game with something on the line other than ruining OU's season. I would expect OSU to be a tight team in the early going, which will curb some of the home field advantage early on, resulting in a close finish.
I absolutely disagree with any assertions this will be a blowout on behalf of either team. It may be high-scoring; it may be low-scoring. It will be close. Definitely not "three touchdowns."

I agree that Bedlam will be closer that three touchdowns. I don't see at this point OU being the victor. I see OSU winning by 10-14 points. One thing that could change that number would be the match up of the special teams. I am not saying that OSU is going to take ever kick to the house, I am just saying that if the returners get huge chunks on returns that would change the game greatly. Unless OU does something to solidify their special teams it will be a long afternoon for the sooners. I know that the sooners have scored alot so that inflates the total amount of return yards against them, but the sooners are on average giving up a little over 25 yards per return by the opponent just on kickoffs alone.

Mr. User Name TBD; how many guys who played at OSU and OU during the 1997, 1954 and 1944 still on their respective squads? Perhaps ancient history is not a good indicator of things to come?

RR: Channel 6 really has gone off the deep end.
Grade of C for scoring 50 on national TV, heaven help us all.
And the homing pidgeons, cheep, cheep, cheep: TU is left for the scrubs.
As concerns the radio scene, the morning guys out of OKC are pretty funny, particularly psycho OU fan Uncle; after that, I've gone over to Plank. Coach Pitty Pat said Texas stinks, Dean-O picks stuff like the Euros over the great old USA in the Ryder Cup, the loud one had OU's defense holding Texas to next to nothing.
About early Bedlam action: When OU fans go to the history books, you know the Sooners are in a game.
It's early.
Texas gets beat this weekend.
The Big Ten has once more ruined college football. Penn State is not right.

Gene,
None. But that is in and of itself the point. Nothing in the history of the series (recent or ancient) should lead anyone to believe the Pokies can beat the Sooners by "three touchdowns." All I said was, "That got me to wondering, 'How many times has OSU beaten OU by 18 or more points?'" Reading further - you can read, I assume, so keep doing so - I said I'd expect the score to be around what it has been lately when the game is in Stillwater. None of what I said had any implication that I thought the game would be close just because it always seems to have been. I only started listing scores because I wanted to explain what I meant by saying it should be what it has been the last few times. Sheesh.
Thee-een, I explained - yet again, further in the post - why I feel that way. I'll not explain myself again; I will only clarify. *I think the game will be close because OSU will have something on the line other than ruining OU's season. I think they will come out to start the game tight, which will keep it close early and late.*
How much of that reads like I was using the games from 1997, 1945, and 1944 to base my opinion? Notice my use of the phrase "I think." I never claim to know, unlike the Picker.
Picker, my going to the "record books" was just to satisfy my curiosity. Nothing more, nothing less. Nice try.

When was the last time OSU beat Tech in Lubbock? Seriously... answer my question now. I wouldnt think to far ahead if I where OSU or Texas fans. That odor you start to smell about 30 miles outside of Lubbock???? Home cooking. OU of course gets Tech at home which puts them closer to winning than OSU will get in Lubbock.

JJ,
Lay off the crack man! Why get so mad at OSU fans supporting their team. I take it you are an OU fan. I have listened to OU fans talk about how their team is going to do this or that, kinds remember the last few years around bowl time. Or is that when OU faces the rest of the South they are going to have problems, seems that the defense isn't doing so well since they lost a linebacker. Yeah they have won a couple of games against the mighty North, but that is not saying much. I know that there are games to be played until Bedlam, but it is still fun to talk about it. Again, lay off the crack man!

TV for Tulsa-Arkansas...the Picker should be happy. Pay-Per-View does count as TV, right Picker? No need to arrest anyone this weekend.

So let me get this straight...OU fan can spout off year after year after year about how great their season is going to be and can "look forward" or past any game on their schedule but OSU fan MUST only look to the next challenge and isn't allowed to make a prediction on Bedlam because it's not the next game? PLEASE! Sounds like a double standard to me. Is OU fan getting nervous about the "pokies" already? OU fan is already having nightmares and it's not Halloween yet! Instead of Woods still being open it'll be Dez, Pettigrew, and don't forget about Bowling...or in case Stoopie remembers we can throw the ball we'll run it all over Sooner Nation! I stand by my three touchdown "smack talk"!

Dawn,
Take it from an OU fan - disappointment is a hard pill to swallow. I the past eight seasons I have learned to enjoy every week unto itself. While it may be fun to banter around about a game that's a month away, it never fails that something along the way will catch you by surprise and sour an otherwise fun season. I think what JJ was trying to say is that Tech is the game the team is focused on. If OSU gets by Tech, they'll worry about who's next. It's always the fans that jump ahead. OU is only concentrating on Nebraska, whether the fans are or not. Fans that look down the calendar only set themselves up to be disappointed. Personally, I hope OSU and OU both run the table leading up to Bedlam (but that doesn't necessarily mean I'll be cheering them on). However, That can only happen once both teams beat the teams they play BEFORE Beldam.
Don't give me this "double-standard" crap either. As far as I'm concerned, you can talk all you want. No one on here thinks you shouldn't be allowed to say what you want to say; so say it. Just don't take it personal when someone disagrees with you or makes some juvenile remarks about your opinion.
I'll tell you this, though: any fan of either school that is talking trash about the Bedlam game already is tipping their hand. What I mean is that those that talk the most are the ones who feel least confident about their team's chances.
All I'll say about the game is that I think it will be close. All that really matters is who wins, and I'll refrain from guessing at that at least until 11/24.

And what I mean by the past eight seasons is that from the early 90's and leading up to the 2000 season, I was just happy they won. Period. In 2000, I got caught up in Nat'l Champ talk and got lucky. They won. After that, it seemed like every time I thought they had the stuff to win it all, they somehow found a way to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. So I have learned to temper my enthusiasm about games well into the future. That way it's not so deflating when they do lose the occasional game.

I hate to keep posting consecutively, but I have to get this off my chest...
An OSU fan on Saturday night at a restaurant informed me that OSU is better than OU because, "they didn't lose by as many points." I told him to show me where that would be shown in the team's record. I didn't know "losing to Texas by less than OU" would be documented next to that loss. Comparing two teams that haven't played by solely judging scores versus common foes is a popular but foolish comparison. It just doesn't work that way.

Tamale,
God save us from the OU bandwagon fans.
Did you graduate from OU? Or just a fan after 2000?
