OU Couldn't Carry OSU's Under Garments

What happened versus Tech?
Don't start that OU homer injury garbage. A team competing for a national title is supposed to have quality reserves.
The same thing happened against Tech that has happened every year for more than a decade: a big fat mess on all levels, worst of all defensive coaching.
The Mike Stoops vibes couldn't have helped either. He leaves Arizona, Arizona wins huge. He shows at OU, defensive nightmare.
Landry Jones was wild high, wide and ugly. He's no more ready for the NFL than any other average quarterback. Forget the Heisman list. He's all conference honorable mention.
And the defense pulled a classic Venables meltdown that has contributed to OU being considered the most overrated team ever.
The OU defensive secondary was torched, scorched, toasted, roasted, half-baked, burned, blistered and embarrassed.
And there was no pass rush.
The Tech quarterback can play ball.
The good 'ol boy coaching fraternity at OU is not earning its fat salaries.
An upset win over OSU and a Boise Bowl are the secondary goals remaining.
OSU in those great white road uniforms looked good.
The Missouri quarterback was horrendous.

It was a classic trap game. Tech had not been a problem at home and they should have easily stopped them. The defense was the worst they played all season.

Don't forget that our kicker missed two field goals that made the difference. This game was supposed to be a road game but thanks to Nebraska and Colorado leaving we had to play them at home. We would still have our home winning streak in tack if we were still at 12. Picker, you hide behind the name "Picker". Why don't you reveal who you are? You can't stand to face criticism or what?

boooooo, hoooooo, excuses, excuses, excuses. But, what's new??? Every year we hear how great the sooners are and they are national contenders, and then the balloon gets burst. Then the excuses start. Come on it gets a little old.

Agree. Picker is a coward....sure is easy to speak boldy when the public doesn't even know who you are.
We don't have to use the "no excuses" the Stoops so commonly uses. Many factors DID make the difference....and part of that was injuries. Tech picked on Gabe Lynn all night and it worked. But OU still almost pulled it out.....if they had just made the scores when they had the chance.

Good grief, you can't be serious posting this drivel?
Blame the kicker, blame the schedule, etc.; you forgot to blame the dog for eating the playbook.
BTW, if you don't know the Picker's identity, it's too late for you to "get a life".

I didn't see a down of the OU / Tech game, but having watched OSU / MO I would not want either defense to play either Bama or LSU. I watched both those games and LSU made Auburn holy because they beat the hell out of them.

Well, all I can say is that I watched the game and OU only played one half of decent football. You have to play both halves, not one. State will win the In State rivalry at home. Landry is average compared to Weeden.

Well said pick. Overrated OU is 1st victim of this year's Big-12 fratricide party which is now on course the leave the entire league in a tangled mess...much to the delight of Boise. Okie State is good but shaky at times. Crystal ball stays with the SEC this year.

Missed tackling by linebackers
is not getting torched!
Those quick 5 yrd passes
turns to 20 yrd gains
OU Offense “Ouch”
No run game, makes inside the 5 yrd line
a Timothy Leary Experience
Landry’s soap float pass
bubbles all over the place
Guess OU fans expect other teams
to lay down because they are OU?
OU self-destruct? Anyone Responsible?
Will OU fans ever admit that
the other team was/is better than them?
QB Luck has Stanford, Hollywood,
& ABC/ESPN giving him the Heisman
But no one throws a better pass than Weedon
K-St @ OSU Nov 5th for the Big 12 Championship?
Pt spread for OU @ OSU right now

We didn't beat MO as bad as I thought we would. The dropped passes and not having 2 of our top 3 WRs for most of the game prolly accounted for the difference.
I'm with Laff; it's the other kitty cats that concern me. We'll know more a week from now.

OU problem isn't with scoring...they manage to score enough even when it's ugly. Problem is with the D...always has been...can't win if you get outscored
Danomite Dandy Dan

The team had obviously read too many sports stories, such as, "Veteran teams don't panic when down."
Unfortunately, when you don't get a LITTLE excited after suffering a few three-downs-and-out, you start waiting on someone else to take charge.
Have to wonder why Venerables chose to wait until the middle of the third quarter, before blitzing the QB. Everybody else was wishing OU would apply pressure.

What idiot let Mike Stoops roam the sidelines? I wouldn't have allowed him within earshot or eyesight of any of my players. He should have been parked up in the box with the coaches wives and told to keep quiet.

I would never have allowed Mike Stoops within eyesight of my players, much less allowed to roam the sidelines. He should have been told to sit with the wives and keep quiet. Close proximity to losers is contagious.

So, Mr. Picker, why did you pick OU to win by 30 if it has such a bad, poorly coached team?
bjorn2run

Other teams' receivers had been that open all year. OU finally played a quarterback who could connect with them.

It looks like Landry Jones is the third best QB in the state. Bill Blankenship could be right. G.J. Kinne could be the best QB in the state. However, it's hard to tell due to the talent discrepancies between OSU and TU. As far as the OU defensive coaching, how many meltdowns will it take for Bob Stoops to fire Brent Venables? That's the problem I have with Stoops. He's too loyal too his assistants and too afraid to fire anyone. Some new coaching blood couldn't hurt, could it?

Obviously the "Picker" understands that if you can't play, coach, or manage football you go off and be a Newspaper Critic. Toby Keiths lyrics "the Critic" come to mind when thinking of a writer who "picks" a team to win by 30 points and then "Guns" them down after the fact like he actually had it right?

It is interesting to note a respected columnist in Texas has called for Bob Stoops job after they lost to Tech. My Question is this why would you fire a guy that has gone 72-3 at home? That makes no sense whatsoever.

I don't think Stoops or his staff should be fired, but I am beginning to think that they will probably not win another national championship. Lately, Stoops has been at his best when his team was the underdog (2007 in Big 12 championship against #1 Missouri, 2008 against Texas Tech). However, OU will never again be the underdog for an entire season like they were in 2000. The national championship they won back then put a big target on their back that has stuck with them ever since.

What is this thunderous silence emanating from the cheer-leading section for Brent Venables at the Tulsa World?
Blue&Gold
(last year)
Pick is right...championship teams have good depth and it is obvious OU does not at key positions (LB, DB). It is also obvious that LSU does have quality depth all over the field. They lost the BEST defensive player in the country, a top starting RB, and a good defensive lineman and they still absolutely HAMMERED Auburn as well as not giving up any points to an offense everyone knows is potent.
My prediction for the rest of the year: OU wins out and goes to the Fiesta Bowl against Cincinnati who will be auditioning for a new conference. LSU vs. Boise St in Nat'l Championship as I expect both Clemson and Stanford will lose a game (Stanford to Oregon; Clemson to So. Carolina or in ACC title game). Thanks to Sparty for exposing Wisky's pass defense or lack thereof. Ok State will once again choke against OU and the defense can't stop the run and when it tries to seel out to do so, Jones will throw it over the top...OU just has to hope to remember the stick 'em for that game as it is apparent that OU's WRs might have trouble catching a cold, let alone passes that hit them between the numbers.

The Picker began entertaining – and infuriating – sports fans in 1993. Each week during football season, he writes about his picks of college and NFL games in his Thursday Sports column. He's never afraid of sharing his opinions about the game and the personalities who play it. Readers have a chance to go against him each season in the Outpick the Picker contest. He welcomes the competition.
