OU Doesn't Want NCAA Tourney History!
Published: 3/9/2009 4:25 PM
Last Modified: 3/9/2009 4:25 PM

OU would probably be better off not going in as a top seed into the NCAA basketball tournament.

Here's why.

It could be the first number 1 seed to lose to a number 16 seed!

Without the Griffin connection, with a turned ankle or some rotten officiating, the rest of that team could lose to the Podunk Beauty College.

What's with all the moping around, anyway; the game is supposed to be fun.

The way we would play OU is to put three people on Blake Griffin and let the rest of them do what they wished.

OSU over OU in OKC this week is a virtual lock in our hoop selection of the decade.

With that win, OSU coach Ford is clearly the coach of the year over Self.

The Big 12 could be looking at some big trouble at the tourney: Texas one and done, KU two and through.

If you think you know so much, enter the World's bracket contest and see if you can stay up.

In related basketball news, does anybody care that the ORU basketball program is in the pits?

Mr. Picker, ORU will recover very quickly when Jarvis is out of there. In the Summit League first round, Jarvis went 2-12 and 0-6 from the
field. He would have been in there five minutes for a real coach. He is the consummate "ball hog" and the other players detest those characteristics. With him gone, there will be FIVE players on the team again.

Wow Picker, I know it's your job to infuriate those who read this blog, but that was intense even for you.

Picker, thanks for your personal email, but if my comments had gone "across the line," they would have been removed. Bullying in the privacy of email is even worse.

Let's keep it in the open and try to put on a happy face. Here, I'll get you started:

The Picker's column is a staple AND a luxury good.

The Picker brightens my brights and whitens my whites.

Four out of five dentists recommend The Picker.

This selection counts in the the infamous Picker Streak !

Usually Final 4 teams have 3 ingredients; a decent center, a good small &/or power forward, & a “solid” pt. guard. OU’s inside game is Final 4 “potential” but their erratic, guard play w/ no true point guard or good ball handler will be them Sooners downfall.

OSU over OU? Who has more 2 play for? Whose quicker off the break? Whose guards can consistently penetrate the middle? Whose more ready for the pro’s; Anderson for OSU or Warren for OU? Snicker might just be right! But there is the Byron Eaton factor, makes a great play then ‘duffs one!

Why is KU (The Big 12 Champ & probable tourney champ) considered a #3 seed & OU a #1 or #2 seed?

Will any Big 12 team make it to the sweet 16?

Where do I find the bracket contest? Not that I think I know a lot, but it's always fun to play.
Deep In The Heart (4 years ago)
Texas didn't need 3 people to control Blake Griffin, only Dexter Pittman.
Dash Riprock (4 years ago)
Deep In The Heart...control Blake Griffin? In Norman he had 20 points and 10 rebounds. If you are saying that Pittman controlled Griffin in Austin, I suppose when Griffin played a little over a quarter, you could consider him 'controlled'. Concussions will do that to anyone, right?

OSU over OU in OKC a virtual lock? Hoop selection of the decade? Make sure the Pokies get there first before beating your chest too much Pick. You think James Anderson is gonna have another 37? Believe me he won't and let's face it, do you think Eaton, Harris, Moses and Page are gonna do it? I'll bet major quan they won't...how 'bout you? A sense of urgency only lasts until the first timeout, then talent takes over.
Lance-a-lot (4 years ago)
You mean virtual as in your online girlfriend? What kind of "virtual" lock are you talking about?

It is nice to see someone liked my name so much they had to imitate. I know you think I'm cool and all, but please... that is kind of stalker"ish".
MexiMike (4 years ago)
I think since the Pick underestimated OSU in Norman, he has to make up for it by locking OSU to win on a neutral floor. I'm a big OSU fan and as much as I appreciate his new found respect, I can't see it happening. I'm not even sure for that matter that I would like to see it happen (I'd much rather take an 11 seed than an 8 or 9 seed in the NCAA tourney but that's a whole different story).

Dash, I don't think Anderson will score another 37 but I do think he will score at least 20-25 in each game (assuming OSU beats Iowa State). As long as the "great" Eaton shows up this time, who knows what can happen?
But What Do I Know? (4 years ago)
Is ORU still playing basketball?
Arbythree (4 years ago)
Ok Pick. You said "OSU over OU". That means you are making two picks. OSU over ISU and OU.

Thus you may very well lose two times, playing only once.

It does count and we will remember.
The Picker (4 years ago)
Marguerite, there will be two ways to get at the bracket contest: directly, at tulsaworld.com/madness09. Or on the World's home page, there will a March Madness bug -- both will lead you to a bracket and the prizes.

Gene M., thanks for the ORU thought -- never seen such a lack of response to the state of the program.

Yes, it's true, OSU plus the points against OU Thursday is the official pick. The number was ten and a half last time when OSU could have won outright had Warren not squeezed in that long three-pointer. The number should be about 8 this time and could bring our point spread streak to 20 of 21.

A quick question: What is everybody talking about when it comes to TU and the NCAA tournament?

It has to beat Memphis at Memphis, it's that simple.

And Memphis could be playing for a 1 seed.

Will a Big 12 team hit the final 16? Good question. Yeah.

But it's all about match-ups; so today's bright idea is Monday's Mulligan.

At this point, it's NC and Pitt versus the field.
The Picker (4 years ago)
Rocket, thank you very much for your sanity.

The odds would have to be great concerning a TU NIT home game. Finally that BCI fiasco will pay off! So many fans supported that tournament, the NIT must think people would hang from the rafters for a game against a real team.
Marguerite (4 years ago)
Thanks, Mr. Picker, for the link to the men's basketball college basketball tournament contest. Where's the one for the women's tournament?
Marathonman (4 years ago)
Looks to me like Mr. Picker also selected the #16 seed to beat OU (if they get a #1 seed)....
fressiesmom (4 years ago)
Hey Picker, why are you wasting your talent in Tulsa? You could be working any where in the country. Maybe in one of those states that you like the teams better, Florida or Texas. I'm sure one of their papers would have an opening for you.
Maybe in the circulation department..delivering
papers...
Deep In The Heart (4 years ago)
Yes, Dash Riprock he was controlled by Pittman in the loss to Texas. 2 points and 2 fouls in 17 minutes gametime before he left with injury.
MexiMike (4 years ago)
Woah, hold on Pick. You had OU beating OSU by 10. They only lost by 4. I believe that brings your current streak to 18 of 20, not 19 of 20...

Wait a minute. I see what you've done here. The actual spread was 10.5, so you picked 10. This way, if OU had won by more than 10 you could say it was a win for you. And even though OSU lost by less than 10, you still picked a number beneath the spread amount therefore you could say your streak of "beating the spread" still continues.

That's pretty cheap, Pick. I'm starting to see exactly what Robin Segal is saying.

Here's a quick way to fix it. How about you release your record based only on YOUR spread amount and not on a mixture that gives you a win-win situation? To think I used to actually respect your picks...wow, that's pretty low.
The Picker (4 years ago)
Fressiesmom: So you have to love every team where you live? What we love most is picking winners.

Listen, the Picks are global as it is. We get readers and responders from the far corners of the country as well as numerous overseas venues, and, obviously, going by the words of Keyboard Cowboy and MexiMike, we also hear from group therapy sessions.

Cowboy and Mike: Here is the way picking works with grown-ups. The OU-OSU point spread was 10 and a half. In print. Everywhere. This means OU was favored at home to win by 11 or more. We picked OSU. OU won by less than the spread. Therefore we won the point spread pick again! Maybe if we used stick figures.

The pick Thursday is: OSU plus the points with OU. An outright victory is not out of the question. Matter of fact, we will go ahead and make the outright upset call. But the big boys pick against the spread. Try to keep up.
robin segal (4 years ago)
The problem with citing statistics is that terms like "the spread," for example, have several meanings, depending on whose spread you mean.

It is possible to say something that is statistically true, but still wrong or at least misleading, by most standards. Here is an example: the average person has one testicle.
HiredGun (4 years ago)
Well lookingover the past few years ORU has had the winningest team in the state. I believe that is correct. I do care about ORU, although OU alumnus and TU alumnus.

Sutton has done more with less than any coach I can remember in the college ranks in Oklahoma. One bad year is allowed. By the way, have we not fogotten that Coach Sutton at ORU should have been Coach Sutton at OSU. Tehy picked the wrong boy! Better luck next year Coach Sutton you are a class act!

Well, picker was right on the OSU/OU game tonight. . .
