OU, Michigan, Notre Dame, Etc.
Published: 11/8/2009 10:28 AM

That one was right out of the Howard Schnellenberger-John Blake offensive handbook.

The warning signs have been there: Losing ALL the close games, ALL the BCS bowls, playing without emotion on the road.

Now that the OU football program finds itself suddenly down with the Notre Dames and Michigans, it's time for some questions.

First, a note about the TU quarterback. He played great. By making quicker decisions about throwing or running, he displayed great talent.

Now a note about Vegas. Vegas does not put out bad numbers.

Now some questions about OU's shocking freefall.

What's the point of the hurry-up no-huddle offense? It doesn't work, particularly on the road.

Where's the depth? At any position? Other teams have terrific subs. Is something messed up with the red-shirt program? Where are the quality replacements?

Why are there no new offensive plays?

Is the offensive co-ordinator going to catch some serious heat?

Wouldn't a quarterback with some mobility be nice for a change? Not an option joker, just somebody who could side-step a rush now and again, or run for six yards.

Why can't somebody kick a field goal?

Why do the same people continue to make penalties?

Why don't the runners ever break a long one?

Are the coaches over-paid?

Why does there seem to be so little enthusiasm on the sideline?

This offense is dead.

Somebody call Switzer.

Can you imagine what TCU's coach could do with OU's resources? Was Landry Jones ever considered that great a prospect by anyone else outside of the not very big 12?

Sooners fall out of top 25 football rankings
Why is this a headline???

All good questions, Pick.  All top coaches are definitely overpaid, in answer to one.  But that's just the nature of the beast.

In answer to yours, Ignatz:  No, I can't imagine him doing more with their resources than Bob could, and yes, Landry was considered a great prospect by just about everyone.

Pick:
You raise some good questions. I hope during Stoops weekly press conference somebody asks him why he hasn't fired the offensive line coach, James Patton. Again, this line stinks, and could not even block Idaho State, and last year's line underachieved.
Patton came from Northwestern, hardly an offensive juggernaut, and is not qualified to coach at OU.
How about an o-line coach from a SEC school that plays physcal football?
I would also like for Stoops to start pulling scholarships. If you don't perform, you pay for your own education. The free-ride scholarship is over and dead. You might see some of that emotion on the sideline, and it would show the youngsters what the real world is all about.

AMEN!  You've nailed it once again, Mr. Picker...  I've wondered those very questions over the last several weeks...  Bottom line is that OU needs to make some changes - namely within its coaching staff...  The Stoops good ol' boy network isn't up to snuff...  There have been problems with Venables and BJ Wright for a few seasons, although the offense's ineptitude has overshadowed any defensive miscues this season (Miami game anyone?)...  And an experienced O-line, QB, TE, WRs, RBs made Wilson look like a genius last year...  This year, even though they don't have the dogs to do the same thing, the coaching staff is stubbornly sticking with the same scheme...  The epitome of the definition of insanity is doing something over and over again and expecting a different outcome...  Even in Boo Blake's last year in Norman he was smart enough to scrap da Bone in the first game of the 1998 season when he figured out it wouldn't work...  The Switz didn't try to force Jamelle Holieway to run a pro set offense after Miami shattered Troy Aikman's leg...  A good coach/coaching staff will develop a scheme based on the personnel instead of trying to make a square peg fit in a round hole...

I still fail to understand how they can't find ONE person to kick a freaking field goal...  Special teams miscues tick me off the most...  Maybe OU should employ Mike Leach's tactic and get some college coed out of the stands...  Heck...  I've still got eligibility left...  And even at 5', I'm pretty sure I'm bigger than little Jimmy Stevens, too...

Great post, sir!

You are correct in your assesment. If Bob Stoops would address any of these 3 questions he could start making improvements. I have been off of his wagon since the West  Virginia free-fall. Of course the worst one that affects the team is; Why does there seem to be so little enthusiasm on the sideline?
Steff M (3 years ago)
Good players make coaches look good.  Bad players make coaches look bad.  We have less good players on offense due to graduation, injuries, suspensions, dismissals and transfers.  The few "good ones" still there are underachieving.  Firing coaches or calling different plays won't change that.  Sorry.
Marathonman (3 years ago)
With all the legitimate issues raised, you really think a lack of sideline enthusiasm is the most critical?  Some intensity may be needed, but enthusiasm???  Get real....

I think what is most amazing to me is that OU cannot find a kicker that they trust to even ATTEMPT a 40 yard field goal in the 4th quarter of a close game. If you look at the top programs in college football, a group which OU portends to be a part of, they all have superb special teams on a yearly basis. OU's special teams for at least the past two years have been absolutely terrible. Where else can the blame for that lie but the coaching staff?
Steff M (3 years ago)
The kicker's foot for starters.  Tress is a great athlete and a great kid with a monster leg.  Hopefully he can get it figured out soon, if he gets another chance.  Looks like they're going back to Stevens for the time being.

Hey Pick, please explain to me why a coach would opt to call a play on fourth and short to a pitch man five yards behind his line of scrimmage with no blocking in front???
This game would even be an embarrasment to John Blake/Howie Smellingburger. We have developed a new low that we now can start talking about.

This coaching staff is apparently tenured.  Nobody has a legitimate fear of losing their job, why should they?

They have gotten so comfortable that the only thing that the coaches have added are additional chins and middle age girth while basking in the lap of luxury.
The Picker (3 years ago)
It seems that on this OU team, when one person gets injured -- at any position -- school is out, there's no hope of a quality replacement.

Why?

Other teams plug in good subs all the time.

Each game, there are a couple hundred guys hanging out on the sideline.

Who are they?

What's up with the red-shirt program?

Blaming the field goal kicker is a disgrace. It's a way of letting Stoops and the coaching staff off the hook. Pro kickers miss 40-yarders all the time. Why wasn't this guy kicking earlier if he was the best? Why let him try his first meaningful kick at Nebraska? Blame the coaches that put him back there, not the kid himself.

PS: Nebraska stinks and lowly KU takes the Cornhuskers out this weekend.

MexiMike (3 years ago)
I honestly thought OU was going to smash Nebraska. It goes to show how one great Defensive Tackle can completely change a game.

As far as the offense goes, everything begins and ends with the Offensive Line. It was the biggest problem in the beginning of the year and it continues to be the problem even now.
MexiMike (3 years ago)
I'll go along with that KU prediction, Pick. It seems like any team with an average offense can outscore Nebraska. We'll see.
BLA (3 years ago)
Disclaimer:  Not an OU fan. Not a Texas fan, not an OSU fan.  OU's offense is horrible.  Why can't Chris Brown and Demarco Murray break a run longer than  10 yards?  Offensive line.  Why does FR QB throw 5 picks?  Inexperience, rushed, and Offensive line.  That is the problem with OU right now and has been the entire season.  Anyone thinking the defense is the problem is smoking something too strong.  The defense has played pretty well all year.  Hold Texas to 16, Nebraska to 10 points.  A lot of points against OU come off of turnovers and short fields created by the offense's ineptness.  Everyone is complaining about Venables but I have yet to see any team's offense just thoroughly throttle OU this year.  Are there some minor breakdowns...yes, but you see that in all teams (USC is a good example). Give the D a break...with 5  turnovers in games, its a miracle OU is even in the game in the 4th quarter.
SBH (3 years ago)
Atticus, they do play football outside of the SEC, believe it or not. Obviously, OU had zero recruits ready to play this year to make up for injuries. I can't really put that on Atticus. Landry Jones threw five picks the other day. Not the O-lines fault, son.

Nebraska's offense is 84th in the country and they play in the Big 12. Holding those jokers to ten is not amazing. OU needs help at EVERY position on offense.
The Picker (3 years ago)
SBH in OKC, exactly put.

How can you be in a national championship game one year, and have zero depth the next season?

You go the juco route too extnesively, that's panic, get the Crime Scene tape ready.
OU_Glenn (3 years ago)
There are three big problems with the OU offense right now: 1. The Offensive Line is terrible, 2. the receivers are not running their routes correctly (and dropping passes), 3. The offensive coaching staff isn't making in-game adjustments to what the defense is doing. OU was pressuring KSU's QB in their game against OU, and the KSU coaches rolled the QB out of the pocket in order to adjust to OU's pressure. However, the OU coaches failed to adjust and just kept running the same plays.
MexiMike (3 years ago)
Actually SBH, those 5 INTs thrown had a lot to do with the O-Line. Constant pressure being put on any QB (especially a freshman) tends to lead to a lot of bad throws.

Give the QB some time to see his routes and calmly throw them and I guarantee the INT stats drop dramatically.
Rapid Robert (3 years ago)
Jay Cronley, you great know-it-all you!! Please use your tiny wisdom and tell us what OU's record would be as of this moment if it had played every game with a healthy Bradford (returning Heisman winner) and Gresham (returning top 15 Pro pick and All American)!!
OU_Glenn (3 years ago)
MexiMike, that's correct. If you have no offensive line, you have no offense. Period. It doesn't matter who the QB, WRs, and RBs are if you can't protect your QB and open up running lanes for the RBs.
MexiMike (3 years ago)
Rapid Robert, the whole point is that OU doesn't have Sam Bradford BECAUSE of the points the Picker made!

Bad recruiting system, questionable coaching, and shallow depth on the O-line lead to Bradford's injury in the first place.

Why is it that OU is racking up all these injuries by the way? Are these the most unlucky kids in the nation? Maybe someone needs to light a fire underneath the seat of the Strength and Conditioning coach.
