OU, OSU Need to Get Better, A Lot Better

Sam Grooms goes up for a layup during the Bedlam game on Feb. 22. JAMES GIBBARD/Tulsa World

Oklahoma’s victory over Oklahoma State on Wednesday night probably doomed OSU to a losing season, erasing what slim hopes the Cowboys still had, and probably was not enough for the Sooners to avoid a losing season.
It has been a forgettable season for Oklahoma’s two Big 12 Conference basketball teams.
The Cowboys have been sporadic almost from the start of the season. OSU had played better in recent weeks but it was far too little and far too little.
Oklahoma had actually overachieved through a weak non-conference schedule but once the Sooners hit the tough stretch of the Big 12 season they fell apart.
As a result, both would appear headed to an early exit at the Big 12 Tournament in Kansas City in two weeks.
The Cowboys have been so inconsistent it would be foolish to bet on them putting together 40 minutes against an upper-division Big 12 team.
Same goes for the Sooners.
Fans of both teams will expect dramatic improvement next season. Lon Kruger gets a pass because of the low level of talent that he was left for his first season.
OSU’s Travis Ford gets another season because he took OSU to the NCAA Tournament in his first two seasons. The last two seasons have been disasters.
So, it is time the Cowboys and Sooners start moving back up in the Big 12 standings. Or, there will be a lot of grumbling at this time next year.

There will only be grumbling this time next year if anyone still cares.
