OU, Tiger, TU, Tony Turnover, Simms

And now here's all the recent news that's fit to be tied.

Have there ever been two more overrated major sport teams than the football and basketball squads at OU?

The Sooner football team was pre-season top five and wound up listed among the "others." The OU hoop team was pre-season top five and will be all out to make the NIT, and is now listed as "distant others."

It's time for a wake up call, Mr. Stoops: the way Texas is winning all the great recruits, it's time for the staff to quit being hard-headed and dump the lousy spread formation and get back to basics, real man running.

What to do about basketball? You mean next year? Recruit closer to home.

Tony Romo did the impossible at the Pro Bowl, tossing a game-losing interception against a defense more or less seated in folding chairs.

The crowd at the end of that game looked like the GMAC Bowl.

In more basketball news, TU appears to be on the NCAA bubble. With the bubble foating over the Grand Canyon. If coach Wojo doesn't get to the fast dance, serious job heat is apt to ensue. Picker's note: We like coach Wojo.

The center got five shots last game. Come on. He should get five shots a minute.

OSU is 55-45 to make the NCAA tournament.

The game of pro golf just got somewhat disgusting and entirely boring.

In rotten economic times when unemployment is in serious double figures, when children in Haiti are scratching for crumbs, who wants to see rich widows leaping in front of golf balls headed out of bounds at Pebble Beach.

There is Phil again, looking like a Stepford male, that uncalled for smile plastered across his face. There comes Ernie Els plodding up another fairway, two under, two over, what does it matter. And who in the world are those new nobodys?

Quick, bring back Tiger and the barmaids.

This somber note: Phil Simms is not hoarse.

Pick, I'll comment on the basketball part of your blog, since that is in season. The problem with OU's and TU's offenses is that they aren't getting the ball inside and getting easier baskets in the paint. These baskets in the paint help set up wide open 3 point shots, and increase both 3 point and 2 point shooting percentage. If you don't get the ball in the paint, you'll rely on the jump shot to win and you shoot a lower percentage from the field.

Newsflash to the Picker: Texas runs the spread offense also.

OU basketball was not picked as a top 5.  OU football recruiting class is ranked #6.  Pathetic huh?
The Picker (3 years ago)
Note to Herb, Texas lost.

Note to Masked, oh, so OU basketball was ranked 6, not five. You're right. OU football and basketball were not the most overrated major teams in sports history. Thanks for your objective viewpoint.

I haven't watched golf since Tiger left.

Read much, Pick?  Try again.  I said the FOOTBALL team has the #6 recruiting class.  You were talking about that, remember?  The basketball team was picked 11th or worse by most pubs.  And are you sure OU football was overrated last year?  Looked more like overinjured to me.  How quickly we forget.

Picker, Florida uses a spread offense; they seem to have won a few games.

"OSU is 55-45 to make the NCAA tournament."

That's odd, Pick. Didn't you say they only had a 40% chance a couple blogs ago?

Didn't you also predict that OU would more likely get in than OSU saying they had a 50% chance?

Let me guess, in March, OSU will have an 80% chance to get in and OU will have a 5% chance?

Haha, maybe you should change your name to "The Waffle."

Dead on with the OU hoops misguided recruiting... but that started when they hired a coach who was too young and couldnt tell you what a 'Sooner' even was and has no loyalty whatsoever to Oklahoma. He actually said, 'Man, I didnt realize OU had so much bb tradition...' After he was hired!

dcood, your analysis would explain the 2008-2009 season?
The Picker (3 years ago)
Time to add OU women hoops to overrated list.

Maybe if the coach quit calling her players guys.
The Masked Assassin (3 years ago)
No comment, Pick?  That's what I thought.
The Picker (3 years ago)
Masked, comment about what?

The OU football and basketball teams have been the most overrated in the history of sports.

Next question.

I guess you DID forget about injuries having a little something to do with OU's "overrated" status.  As for the basketball team, yeah they were overrated, but not to the extent you seem to believe.  Check the pre-season Top 25 and see how many other teams were overrated.  It's not like it's a rare thing.  You can't really predict how young teams will respond after losing their best player (players), especially if they'll be relying heavily on incoming, untested freshmen.

Man, this is just too much. After Saturday, rolaids are the meal of the day at Stillwater.  It might be time to take a look at the Sun Belt.
The Masked Assassin (3 years ago)
I guess Texas was overrated now too, huh Pick?  Or is that just college basketball?
Glenn616 (3 years ago)
Time to add OU women's hoops to being overrated? What about OSU women's hoops? You cannot tell me that they're a legit top ten team. What about the Texas men's hoop team being rated No. 1 just a few weeks ago?

A lot of stock should not be placed in preseason rankings by "media" or anyone else for that matter, but OU football overrated?  I guess unexpectedly losing the top quarterback and tight end selections in the upcoming NFL draft before the second half of the first game is something that any team should simply overcome?!?  This, coupled with what is universally referred to as an incredibly inordinate amount of injuries across the team are the biggest explanations for the down year.  So go ahead, pile on.

Next, I know this will fall on deaf, cartoon ears, but when you shoot your mouth off in the future, please try to know what you are talking about.  OU does not run a spread offense.  It is a Pro set offense.  Just because they occasionally run 3 and 4 receiver sets doesn't make it a "spread".  OU's offensive schemes are just fine--scored most points in modern CFB history in 2009 with 2 1K rushers.  So, get a clue, Nose Picker.

Admittedly, OU basketball team was way overrated.  Tony Crocker and Willie Warren III, while they might be good kids, are not equipped to be traditional team leaders.  Neither are most freshmen, but TMG is going to eventually fill that role nicely once WW III leaves.
