OU Versus Texas
Published: 6/23/2010 4:04 PM

Question: Dear Pick, which team would you rather have in your conference, OU or Texas?
Answer: Let's see.
One point one billion TV sets in the state of Texas, a tiny percentage of that in Oklahoma.
Let's see.
Recruiting inroads into the state of Texas, or recruiting inroads into the state of Oklahoma?
The answer is Texas.
Q: Is there a cure?
A: Sure.
Beat Texas at football.
If you will notice when OU fans speak of gridiron success, most if not all of the talk has to do with the past -- sometimes quite a few years ago, and it comes after the qualifier, yeah but: Yeah, but, we won all those conference championships (with a lame North); yeah, but, we used to beat Texas all the time; yeah, but, we won all those non-BCS bowls.
The time has come to get current.

Yes,Picker...that's the way OSU thinks about OU also. Same deal, superior resources. Your're not going to overcome that on a consistnet basis so OU can say well we beat Texas a few times..maybe.

I 100 percent agree with you on this particular post, Mr. Picker. Nobody cares about what happened 8-10 years ago. It's all about what you've done recently.

This must be nothing more than provocation. The reasoning is flimsy. Denigrating the conference championships won by OU, while simultaneously ignoring all the conference championships NOT WON by Texas while operating in the same universe.

Operating with deeper pockets, giant television market, better talent and a big ole cow.

Past may be prologue for OU. The Texas football program continues to equal (or surpass) the Duke basketball program for doing the least with the best talent.

Humble apologies for double post. The server was acting persnickety.

I agree. I'm not calling for Stoops' head, but its about time we get back to being top dog. 2nd place is a cold spot.

Second place in a very weak conference will be even more uncomfortable.

didnt Duke just win a national title? When was the last lottery pick Duke had BTW?

Yes, agreed that it is time to win. One has to be realistic, Texas seems to take whomever they want in recruiting each year and OU is getting the leftovers. Josh Turner chose Texas for example and he grew up in Oklahoma. I do believe our coaches are as good as any other coaches (you know winning all those B12 championships). Now if we can just get them to recruit a little more, win a few close ones, it will help. We started this year on a good note by beating a good Stanford Team. TX QB is very inexperienced. Time for OU to win. Boomer!

"TX QB is very inexperienced." Now there's wishful thinking! Gilbert is inexperienced only because McCoy was allowed to pad his stats senior year. Gilbert broke the Texas record for career yards passing at Lake Travis, a high school that could beat half the teams in Div. I. And he dang near led Texas to beat Alabama in the BCS, despite a dreadful first half. This guy is a stud, and he will make people forget all about Colt McCoy. I dislike the horns as much as anybody, but Texas foes are in for a long year.

Tuslan in Exile, experience in high school has nothing to do with experience in college. Gilbert looks like he can eventually be a stud but don't count on it happening over night.

Pick, while I agree OU needs to start beating Texas again, I don't understand how that will help either of your points. Conferences will still take UT over OU because of the billion TV sets that Texas has. If winning football games had to do with conference's selection of a team, the PAC 10 would have invited Boise St. and left Colorado in the Big 12.

Also, maybe I'm misunderstanding, but how does winning make our state's recruiting grounds any more fertile? Does every high school athlete in Oklahoma all of sudden get a bit stronger, faster, smarter every time OU beats Texas?

I wish Texas would just go independent and rule the (I mean their )world!
I thinks its time for them to move on by themselves and keep the dang Texas State Legislature out of sports.
