OU and the Dorial Green-Beckham "sweepstakes"

The night before Ryan Broyles broke his national receptions record at Kansas, Dorial Green-Beckham kept up his pursuit of the national high school receiving yardage record in Springfield, Mo. He'll get there by the end of the season.

And then what? Will Green-Beckham sign with Oklahoma – one of the five schools supposedly still in what the Springfield News-Leader calls the "DGB Sweepstakes" – and vie to become Broyles' heir?

The News-Leader broke it down over the weekend, and in doing so made some interesting points about the logjam of receivers already in OU's fold. Kenny Stills, Jaz Reynolds and Trey Franks all return next year. So does Justin McCay, a five-star redshirt freshman already waiting in line.

The Sooners expect to add Trey Metoyer at the semester. He was Scout's top-rated wide receiver in the nation last year. Four-star receivers Durron Neal and Sterling Shepard will sign with OU next February.

This could be, in the News-Leader's word, a "problem." You get the ball as much as Green-Beckham gets it at Springfield Hillcrest, you probably expect to get it some more your first year in college.

In a lineup like OU's, however, even a Randy Moss-in-the-making like Green-Beckham has to share. That is, assuming he's asked to the table to begin with (the Sooners didn't guarantee Adrian Peterson anything once upon a time; why would they change their ways for this kid?).

Playing point/counterpoint, the News-Leader suggests: "There might be no better way for Green-Beckham to continue to improve than competing against and training with a talented hungry group every day in practice."

No doubt Jay Norvell tries to sell that point when he recruits Green-Beckham. He should.

But it's no guarantee Green-Beckham sees that as an advantage. If he sees a quicker route to playing time at Missouri, Alabama, Arkansas or Texas (he could be an instant savior in big play-challenged Austin), he might go one of those directions.
