OU coaching changes show seedy side of college football

I've never been in favor of paying college athletes.
But what's happened in the Oklahoma football program the last few days gives me a change of heart.
As you've probably heard by now, Bob Stoops has purged the Sooners' coaching staff.
(
).
By most accounts, these were necessary changes made to a program that has been growing stagnant. Applaud Stoops for seeing a problem and trying to fix it.
But how long have these changes been in the works? The talk has been floating around the program for weeks -- if not longer -- so much so that Stoops addressed potential changes during his National Signing Day press conference.
So why wait until now to make the moves? Recruiting.
Talk about the ultimate bait and switch. You send coaches into a recruit's home for months, ask his family to trust you to do the right thing by their son then sweep the rug out from under him a week after he signs his life away for the next four years.
It's so seedy it almost makes the ham-handed way Oklahoma State's Mike Gundy fired defensive coordinator Bill Young seem reasonable by comparison.
Maybe the OU coaches were upfront with recruits about the changes on the horizon. The players who have taken to Twitter to comment make it seem otherwise.
So what is a player left to do? Play for a coach who had no hand in recruiting him or transfer and lose a year of eligibility.
It doesn't exactly seem fair. What if college coaches had to sit out a year before they could move to another Division I school? It sounds ridiculous, but what's the difference?
The most conservative college football observers will tell you this situation is a perfect example why players should sign with a school rather than a coaching staff.
But that's hardly realistic. Do you take a job strictly based on a company name? Or don't you also try to make sure you'll be happy with the people you'll be working for and with?
I'm not for paying college athletes, but something has to be done to level the playing field in their favor.
Maybe athletes should be allowed to transfer without penalty after coaching changes are made.
Maybe then schools like OU would be more inclined to do the right thing.

Great editorial and great point-of-view. Couldn't agree more. These are men in positions of responsiblity charged with teaching/coaching morals to our next generation. Sadly, the responsiblity goes all the way to the top with the A.D. and President ultimately responsible. As long as the football program brings in the revenue it does, nothing will change and any attempt to change it will be fought. How can you ethically tell a young man to trust your program one day and the next day fire the coach who has recruited him?

blah, blah, blah...free education and just trust the head coach. OU will not lead the new players wrongly.

Unfortunately, this happens elsewhere besides athletics. My wife was hired by a manager who soon after took another job. It was too good an opportunity for the manager, so there are no hard feelings there, but the job experience for my wife is greatly diminished without that manager. It's always a chance when you sign on to somewhere.
That said, a release for coaching changes and a binding offer for a full four-year grant-in-aid seem reasonable to level these NLI contracts to protect both the student and the institution. If a student-athlete remains academically eligible at an institution and holds to the same behavior standards expected of other students, he or she should be able to retain his or her scholarship regardless of performance or value in athletics.
College presidents need to firmly be reminded that they operate non-profit (and often tax-supported) higher learning institutions and the athletic departments need to be a part of that mission and not a quasi-independent revenue generator. If that means taking on additional losses, so be it. There are worse things in life than going 10-3.

So when is a better time to change coaches? In the middle of recruiting; say January 5 to February 1. That means a coach is leaving one school to go to another. It also means recruiting is not being done in terms of finalizing the recruiting during January at 2 colleges (or more).
As far as college presidents needing to be reminded that they operate often tax supported institutions, what does that have to do with this issue? Football is supported at the major college level by donations, ticket sales, TV, etc. It is not supported by the tax payers, in most cases. The tax payers support academics.

Coaching changes, like any job change, is part of life. The players are going to college to be students, to learn. Life does not always follow a smooth plan. If a player cannot practice football with different people as the coach, I would think that player is not going to be very successful in life. Is the recruiter/coach going to be his NFL coach or his boss if he works for a company after graduation? Most of the college recruits never even see the field on gameday unless the game is a blowout, much less make the NFL and stay on a pro team. Change coaches after the spring practice-change during the season-no time is a good time but that does not make football "seedy." What is seedy are opposing coaches saying things about a team and its staff which are not true, just rumors, to try to get an edge.

There are no ethics and loyalty left in Coaching.
A Coach can sign a multi-year extension, and talk at length of his desire to stay at that school forever...until the next month when he signs a BIGGER Contract with another school, and moves on...where he will say how he will stay at that school forever. Forever is a very short period of time in College Coaching.
The NCAA should change their recruiting rules and allow recruits to be released prior to joining that school without penalty, if the coach that recruited them, or if their position coach leaves prior to their arrival.
Coachs have no loyalty, but loyalty is forced on the recruits as it stands now.

Coaches get bashed no matter what they do; keep under acheiving coaches and you are too loyal, get rid of them and you are "seedy". The real mercenaries are the ones: ie Todd Graham, Nick Sabin, etc. TU has had several of these guys in football and basketball. You also fail to mention the shoe contracts that big name coaches get that pay them millions.

Thanks for all the discussion.
I'm usually in the camp that many people undervalue the scholarship and other benefits college athletes receive.
But in this case, it just seems wrong to hold onto coaches you know you're going to fire until after you lock in players for four years.
If you're unhappy with your boss, you can start looking for a job right now. How would you feel if instead, after quitting your job, you had to sit out of the workforce for a year?

I agree! If you know you are going to fire a coach then man up and fire them. The players relationship with the coach that recruited them (usually their position coach) influences their decision. By delaying you are being dishonest to the players and you are screwing the coaches over for other job vacancies.
As for the 'ham-handed OSU situation', it is apples/oranges. YOUNG is the one that asked for the news not to be let out. No one really knows when it would have been announced....
