OU football 2008: Elite or Delete?

What is more important for OU, winning the Big 12 championship or winning a BCS bowl game?
The Picker and his staff have been accused of being all over the Sooners.
The truth is that we're objective, and by being so in a state full of media in cheerleader skirts, we stand out, a beacon among the flickering matches.
Concerning Stoops, here are the plusses and minuses as we see them at the moment.
Plus.
He has been brilliant against Texas. He makes Mack Brown seem subservient by comparison. What's more important than dominating Texas? Can't think of a thing.
He knows that obliterating Oklahoma State is a good thing.
He has established a routine top ten presence.
Minus.
His teams play like zombies on the road. Last year, OU lost to doggy Tech and Colorado teams, and lucked out against hapless Iowa State.
A change from speed to size is not welcome. Linemen resemble Sumo guys.
Since brother Mike left, the defense gives up more home runs than batting practice chunkers. Running quarterbacks have a free hand.
So, getting back to the most important question facing the Sooners: Which is more important, winning conference championships or BCS bowl games?
The number one goal at OU is to compete for a national championship.
To do that, you almost have to win a conference championship.
BCS bowl games can be junk. Flukie State, Boise State, whatever that was, who cares, West Virginia actually meant little.
Now, tanking versus USC was a national disgrace.
But on the whole, winning a conference championship is more important than winning a BCS game that is for all intents and purposes meaningless. THE BCS game, critical. The rest, take the money and have some fun.
Ain't objectivity grand?

Do you think we could win the Conference and then not accept a bowl bid? Now that would be what I call coaching.

The bowls are junk. OU on the road is terrible ALWAYS has been not just last year. Do you remember the squeaker at Alabama with the pseudo coach Shula? That bama team was crap. Tight ends & WRs ran crazy in the backfield even when Mike Stoops was there. It isnt just since he left. I can cite atleast 5 games before he left. Same with running QBs. OU made Brad Smith a media darling as a freshman, oh yes with Mike Stoops.

whoops I meant the receivers running wildly crazy free in the secondary. My bad

Objectivity is overrated. I'm a homer thru and thru. BOOMER SOONER!!!

The truth is that we're objective, and by being so in a Tulsa World full of media in orange cheerleader skirts, we stand out, a beacon among the flickering matches.
Agreed. You are the only TW writer who will objectively lampoon OSU's blemishes, even though you do it with 'kid-gloves', at least you do it. For example, if Sutton had coached at OU you would have referred to him as: 'legendary whisky-shooter' or something like that.
You hit this one on the head Jay. West Virginia made us look like we never practice tackling fundamentals.
Thomas, I'm a homer too but we must face the facts..............Objectivity is NOT overrated.
Picker: All in all, I will take Stoops because he does get us to the title games. I just wish I could see more of the defensive fundamentals we saw in the 2000 O Bowl................

The Picker is Jay Cronley. Remember that when you read his stuff.

The problem with the OU defense is that none of the players seem to understand what it is that they are trying to accomplish. Brent has made it so complicated that they are more worried about trying to be in the "right position" that they totally miss the point of what your supposed to do playing defense.....COVER AND TACKLE!! I think we would be better just blitzing every down and playing man to man...giving those kids way to much to think about...we are obviously athletic...why not use it!

The key to OU's year is Bradford. He was terrible in numerous road games and appeared to some to have been knocked out of one contest by a strong gust of wind. He needs to improve his mobility. Not his speed. He needs to get shifty.
Venerables is on the clock and needs to figure out how to stop a scrambling quarterback. OU stops passers all the time. Ask Missouri. The OU schedule is heavenly. The Washington quarterback can run but couldn't throw one through the goal posts from the ten. Don't laugh: Cincy in Norman figures to be overlooked and tough.
The key to OSU's season is the opener at Wash State, which was so bad, it hired a high school coach. If OSU loses to these bums, Gundy can start looking.
The key to the TU season is, as usual, depth on defense. Already, you have offensive stars and pep squad leaders listed as possible linebackers.
The key for Arkansas is passing for 100 yards per game every month or so.

World Picker:
Just because you keep saying you are objective, doesn't make it so.
Your analysis of Bob Stoops' plusses/minusses may be accurate, but neither timely nor original - almost every "homer" has actually said exactly what you said - long before you said it. Nothing new from you - same old re-hash bash.
OSU/TU season keys? Old news.
So don't run around acting like you are objective-you are more like a bigotted plagerist.
Are conference championships important? Well, not if you seldom, if ever, get to play for them, ala CO, Taco Tech, Iowa State,OSU. But, can success/failure aid in recruiting in Big 12?
Are bowl games important? See immediately above. Also, evaluate effect on recruiting at national level.
What does each state team's success hinge on this season? Winning games. Period.
OU can't stop a running/passing QB-ever? I recall you bashing OU after they got "lucky" and beat MU at Norman. You as much as predicted a route by MU in the Big 12 Championship game. It's in print.
OU can't stop the pass?/Can't play well on the road? How bad did Taco Tech beat them on the road without Bradford? They actually looked better in Lubbock than they did in Fiasco Bowl II.
As for defensive backs: if any team's defensive line can mount an effective pass rush it can make the defensive backfield look like heat seeking missles. Ask Missouri. But if no pass rush...well it is a different backfield isn't it?
At some point even us dumb readers recognize the fallacy of your "everyone else is a homer except me" trash.
See you in the funny papers.

Creepy Internet Loser:
Why exactly didn't you pay your OU-Colorado loss?
I wouldn't take it now, with interest.
It does go to the value of a person, doesn't it.

Nit Nose Picker is my favorite person on these blogs.
Never have I witness a man (or woman) become obsessed and offended so easily. I am sure you are a joy to be around.
See you in the funny papers? You are the funny paper.

Chris, he is something else again, isn't he.
Can't you just see him sitting in a corner of his Sooner Room, OU banners all over, a life-size photo of Stoops over his desk, switching from chat room to chat room, creeping out his concerned relatives, several of whom could be considering an intervention.
He just wishes he was the Picker, happens all the time.

NITPICKER.....GET a life joker! I've said it for six months....probably will only get a break from this freak during the 2 weeks the fair comes to town in October....He's the guy spreading pixy dust on the tilt-a-whirl...or maybe barking for the yak woman!

World Picker:
You and your minions make it so easy - once again I have made you all livid by simply pointing out your lack of insight and lack of knowledge. If I use smaller bait will you not get so red-faced mad?
You folks take the bait so easily I should be a pro fisherman---but I don't think any of you are keepers. I'd go broke.
Eric: I won't be at the fair..carneys like you and your family actually scare me. I suppose it is the signs of instability you show in your posts.
Alden: If you spend your time 'going to war' with Obama/City nutcases every day it is a wonder you have time to make a fool of yourself on this site.
Chris: Thanks for the compliment. Do you fantasize about me as a man or a women? You, I mean.
World Picker: you are apparently a liar as well as a second rate hack in a third rate market. I am also aware that you are in need of money with all the meds/doctor bills you pay, but come on--you creep, you know I owe you nothing----and that is the real reason you won't take it now --even with interest.
Once you and your minions are finished ready all the mags/blogs regarding the college pre-season, will you regurgitate more plagerized drivel and claim it as your own? I would be surprised if you didn't, but one can always hope for some originality.
It is just too easy to get your goat, WP.
PS. WP, you still impressed me with the blazing speed with which you jumped on the MU bandwagon last year, and then again with the speed displayed when you jumped off of it.
Rodeo clowns don't hop around that fast.

As you note, the last time OU played in a supposedly "important" bowl game, the Sooners tanked. They quit in the second quarter.
Bob Stoops needs to win an "unimportant" bowl like the Fiesta to show his players that he knows how to prepare for and win a bowl game, or he'll get the same gutless performance that he got vs. USC the next time he has a team in the BIG game.
I'm a Sooner fan, but I'm tired of the no-shows in BCS bowl games. It's as if the program has no pride.

Dear Nit Picker,
The Daily Oklahoma is hiring a sports columnist. I suggest you apply for it, your journalistic skills and integrity are a perfect match for the Daily O.
Think about it.

Dear Chris;
Thanks for the tip on the DOK opening.
If I needed the money, needed the work, didn't have a clue, couldn't pour Gatorade out of a boot if the instructions were on the heel, was as lazy as WP, couldn't find my a** with a search warrant -but I repeat myself - I would apply.
Hey, now I know why the TW never has an opening.
At least the DOK is actually the plaintiff in a law suit.

You must be in a dream world, friend.
From your post count and length, it is clear that you do need some extra cash and do not have a clue.
I think Barry would mold and shape you into a fine journalist. One that has the skills needed to contribute to the world of sports journalism. I mean, the paper itself is ranked as the finest paper in the country, right?
Inside your head, you are always right.

you 'homers' and 'non-homers' are all weak when it comes to OU. I've had season tix since gary gibbs was our coach and everyone was bent out of shape that he only won 8-10 games a year and did NOT play for any conference or national championships. I was there when John Blake drove our program into the dirt and stomped on it; when home games weren't anywhere near the 80 plus-thousand they get now; when Texas A&M drove us into the icy turf on a frozen night in norman when maybe 1000 stuck around in the stands. If you are so unbelievably ignorant as to not understand what a coach like Bob Stoops means to our program and what he's done with it, you are an absolute idiot and do not deserve to post an opinion anywhere, especially on a sports site.
If you were there before Stoops, like everyone wants to admit to, you understand that what he does is win. He might not win every game- but who does? Have you seen some of the teams that have beaten USC that last couple of years? Ohio State getting spanked in back-to-back championship games?
So many of you want to say that you were there before the 2000 National Title year, but the sad TRUTH is that most of you simply were NOT. If you were, you would understand what is happening at OU under Stoops is actually quite special. So we'll see what the OU bandwagon looks like if Bob leaves and the wheels fall off again. Something tells me it will be a lot emptier than it is now. This whole state is filled with fare weather fans.

Chris:
You are rambling. Try eating a protein bar it may help you focus.
I am now more certain than ever that I am right since I have now gotten inside your head. It is a barren (or is it Baron?) wasteland in here.
Duck! here comes another misconception.

Most every TULSA WORLD sports writer last week except you did pick the No. 1 pre-season ACC team, Clemson, to beat the No. 6 pre-seaon SEC team, Alabama. And each week you talk about how great the SEC is; however fans here are BIG 12 supporters and do not want to here that kind of talk. Remember, you write for a newspaper in BIG 12 country, not the Atlanta Constitution or Birmingham News.
