OU is Number Which?
Published: 1/6/2011 5:09 PM

By now you have probably heard that OU is number one in 2011, baby.

It has been listed as number one by NationalChamps.net.

To keep you up to date with the volumns of info making the rounds, and to sort the gossip from pearls, we have formed an investigative squad, the Picks "I" Team, which hopefully will help you with your sporting interests.

The Picks "I" Team has investigated the following: The 2010 top 25 preview from the service that just listed OU number one for 2011.

Here are some highlights from NationalChamps.net's top 25 for the season just concluded.

1. Alabama, oops.
2. Ohio State, oops.
3. Boise State, oops.

It did have Oregon 4, but Auburn was listed as "others" and not even in the entire top 25!

Texas was 5, oops.
Nebraska, 9, oops.
Georgia Tech, 11, heavens to Betsy.
Miami 15, rats.
Oregon State, 17, unbelievable.
Cincy, 18, brother.
West Virginia, 24, man oh man.
Georgia, 25, ouch.

Oklahoma State was not even one of the top 46 getting consideration! Neither was Tulsa.

Of 2010's top 25, six teams, Texas, Georgia Tech, Miami, Oregon State, Cincy, and Georgia, didn't even finish the season upright, did they?

This concludes the Pick's "I" Team investigative report into what's really what, more to the point here, what's not what.

Just how many times have pre-season polls, especially ones that are published before the last season is over, been accurate to any real degree?

Given that, it's fair to put OU in the top 5 based on the returning talent. As to who is the "best", well, I can't go that far.

And from the 2010 predictions you have pointed out, the top 10 seem to be pretty good predictions at that time. If I remember correctly, YOU have Texas pretty high on your list...in fact, didn't you have them beating a certain team from Norman, Oklahoma?

Of course, if you really wanted to fix the system then all pre-season predictions and rankings should never be published. All specuation held until October at least to let the really "good" teams sort themselves out.
This would mean that all the media outlets would have to keep their mouths shut. And I don't think anyone, not even Chuck Norris could calculate high enough odds for that to happen.

Of course, you could set an example and not make any pre-season poll predictions.

Would you? For the greater good of the entire sports nation?

The wire service polls shouldn't come out until October, like the BCS; and the Heisman trophy shouldn't be awarded until the last bowl game is a memory. It's as simple as that.

Sheesh Pick! Always so much hate toward OU. Still mad at Sittler? That’s ok me too. Like you… I am a “clueless, smartass, insensitive critic” and I “think so highly of their (my) football intelligence that they will only share it if they don't have to reveal their names” as well as “wishy-washy, gutless, anonymous critic”.

Anyway, someone has to win the NC, I would personally rather it be a team from the region I live in. If OU seems to have a shot at it… more power to them. Better than some Big 10 or PAC 10 team winning it.

Eh, it has to be somebody. I don't have a problem with OU being ranked number 1 preseason for 2011. It's actually a lot more credible than them being ranked number 1 by Phil Steele in 2010.

Preseason rankings are fluff that help sell magazines. As everyone else has said, rankings that actually mean anything shouldn't even be released until October.

And Pick, get off your high horse about where those publications had OSU in the preseason this last year. If I remember right, you only had them winning six games...

Take it easy on Jay. He's actually hit 2 college games in a row after losing 10... from last weeks picks.

A playoff would solve all those problems/complaints.

Traija, where did you learn how not to count?
traija50 (2 years ago)
as mentioned in an earlier post, you were 13 and 13 in College bowls after Dec 23rd, and I learned to count at Oklahoma University with a BBA and a GPA of 3.6.
