OU or OSU?

OU's Landry Jones. STEPHEN PINGRY/Tulsa World file

Despite the marriage between ESPN and Texas that was conceived in the eternal dungeous of fire and unfairness, and consummated in Austin and Bristol, OU and OSU are predicted by the "experts" to rule most all-star positions in the Big Twelve Minus Two Conference this season.

The proposal by Texas to put high school football on its ESPN channel is so much the devil's work that the Big Twelve Minus Two Conference could fall apart at the thin seams if such nonsense is permitted to proceed. The simple fact that Texas has its own ESPN channel creates such an unfair advantage, it's hard to believe the NCAA hasn't placed somebody on citizen's arrest.

Here's how OU and OSU stack up.

Quarterbacks. Tie. OU's Jones is Jason White, strong arm, occasional odd aim. Weeden came up soft versus OU last year, but he has a quick release and good brains.

Runners. Tie. OU's committee stays with OSU's superior individuals.

Catchers. Tie. All-stars galore.

Kicking. Who knows.

Defense. Tie. OU has a slight edge in skill, OSU has a slight edge in coaching. That's right, coaching, Young is easily the equal of career assistant Venables.

Head coaching. Slight edge to OU. That's correct, slight. The Texas-ESPN marriage -- can't wait to see Old Folks Corso and the rest of the gang in their burnt orange gear --could make Stoops consider Ohio State. Follow a chump up there. Become a hero once more.

Intangibles. OU at Florida State is tough. OSU's conference road game schedule is nasty. Slight edge to OSU because it catches OU at home.

Totals: The teams look about even.

All great points, Mr. Picker. Brent Musburger will now be rooting for Texas harder than ever.

I don't think ESPN will ever come up to take a breath so who cares

BEspnVo TV will force A&M to bolt to SEC. Along w/ OU? Texas might go indy but wonder how many local Texas schools will schedule them in the future.

Gooner TV? Go Digital & partner up w/ A&M, OSU, & perhaps them Jayhwkers or call on them Hawgs!

How well OSU does on the road will determine their BCS hopes. How well OU does vs. Fl St. determines their nat'l title hopes. 3 way tie for Big 12(10) title?

As an OSU fan, I afraid to say anything either way.

Big Red at Okie St. is on a higher level than Mr. Hand of OU....

It's gonna be a great season & I hope that the 2011 Bedlam game becomes legendary.... It's gonna have an awesome buildup until one of the two(2) stumbles....

Hopefully neither one of them do....

It will be interesting to see how this network thing ESPN and Texas have put together works out. At the present ESPN thinks it can pay Texas $15 million a year and make money because the state of Texas has 20 million people and all of the TV sets and cable subscribers to go along with those 20 million people. The BEVO channel ends up on you choice of channels if you live in Texas weather you really want it to or not. This is how ESPN plans on making money.
There is one problem with this plan though, TV streaming over the internet. The day is coming – soon - when we will only be paying for TV channels we want and won’t have to buy the ones we don’t (Lifetime Network, sports fans?). It is already starting to happen. How many of those people in Texas will be interested in paying for the Bevo Network then?

Chris, burnt orange badminton does have a limited life expectancy, doesn't it. It's obviously why the Longhorns are trying to sneak through some high school football, the single most unfair angle in the history of cheating. Is the Big 12 commissioner asleep? Something like that could bust up the conference in a heartbeat. Pay per channel sounds too good to be true. Imagine the advertising ESPN should scare up hustling the Longhorns.

What happens if this Network turns out to be a complete failure? Did ESPN guarantee Texas the agreed upon money no matter what? I’m thinking that would be impossible. The Big Ten network seems to be working but that is a different animal as those states add up to about 60 million people and probably close to ten times the number of alumni. Why is everyone assuming that this thing Bevo network is going to be successful? Is it worth all of the Gnashing of teeth?

One way to counter any boost in Longhorn recruiting advantage would be for the NCAA to limit scholarships to say 65.

Notre Dame got the all time sweetheart deal with NBC and look where they are now.

Of all the Pick stories I would rate this about a six. Six on Dante's circle of hell.

As an OSU fan, I'd love to say our defense is on par with OU's but I just don't believe it to be true. Maybe Bill Young will surprise me. His third season at programs in the past have always been the "breakout" year. Until I actually see it though, I have to give OU the edge.

With that said, I'm going to give OSU the edge in QB (reigning All Big 12), receivers (very, very close though), and runners. OU has some really good backs with star potential but I have to give OSU the edge due to the O-line being one of the best if not THE best in the country.
Pete51 (last year)
I agree with MexiMike. With the exception of Bradford's Heisman season, for the last several years OSU has been as good as or better than OU on offense, and consistently better on special teams. OU keeps winning Bedlam and the conference because of defense, especially d-line. And their defensive game plan for Bedlam last year was obviously very successful. Have to give a pretty significant edge on defense to OU.

QB, receivers, and runners are all pretty close, but I'd give OSU a slight advantage in all three.

As a straight purely Texas sports and PR channel, who cares, let them wallow in themselves. It will get a big first boost from the ESPN ninnies. Then it will have to get by on content. Without any unfair advantages -- putting their high school recruits on a national tube -- you're right, Chris, it could be boring beyond repair. The Notre Dame thing doesn't compare, as that's home football games only. Anything ESPN does appears to have an ulterior motive. Putting OU on through August, kissing up?

Classic aggie reasoning by mexi...'OSU better in everything than OU on offense blah blah' and 'maybe bill young will surprise me'...it isnt about Bill Young. You really think Venables knows more than Young? OSU doesnt have a LB, CB, or DE who would make OU's 2 deep. Thats why OU is better on D, not because of what Bill Young does or doesnt do. You dont work at OU, USC, and Miami (among others) and not know what you are doing.
MexiMike (last year)
Oh, dcood. Thank you for once again chiming in with your clueless thoughts.

Classic aggie reasoning? I guess the coaches and media are all aggies, right? Because Brandon Weeden is the reigning All Big 12 QB and Justin Blackmon is the reigning Big 12 Offensive POY along with being the Biletnikoff winner. But hey, nevermind those facts. Clearly, I only gave OSU the offensive edge simply due to my "aggie reasoning."

When did I knock Bill Young? I realize that OU has more talent on the defensive side of the ball. That was my point. Maybe Bill Young will surprise me by getting his players to overachieve. Try to keep up, cupcake.

By the way, OU would love to have Shaun Lewis, Justin Gilbert, Tyler Johnson, and Richetti Jones. Your lack of football knowledge is really doing some damage on that Sooner stereotype.

I cant read your mind Mexi...all you said was 'maybe Bill Young will surprise me', period. Funny how you get yourself in such a wad over this silly blog business...and by the way, anytime you'd like to talk football Id be happy to oblige...and embarrass you. My guess is you dont know the difference between cover 2 and 'number 2'...you can infer whatever your cynical mind would like to on that one....oh yeah, the pre-season All Big 12 QB aint playin @ Boone.
ChrisR (last year)
No dcood, but the returning all Big 12 quarterback is playin @ Boone.
MexiMike (last year)
ChrisR, you'll have to forgive dcood. Reading comprehension isn't exactly his strong point.

Preseason awards mean absolutely nothing. Ask Jerrod Johnson.

Landry Jones threw for 700 more yards and won the Big XII championship and the old man QB at oswho gets POY??? Did Pickens pay for that too??

hootie (last year)
traija50 - there was actually only a 500yd difference. Jones alse had 1 extra game and threw over 100 more passes. Plus the majotity of Jones's passes were bubble passes which means most yards cam after the catch! Also, Weeden was picked POY by the Big 12 COACHES. Then again, I guess you know more than them, right?!?!?!

Yeah, that dig route and seam route that beat your butts in Stillwater were not bubble routes.

The final TD was a good call against a full rush deffensive call. Someboy should have stayed back. It happens.... Not as good as a "Statue of Liberty" play though!! ; )
