OU to Stomp Notre Dame
Published: 10/22/2012 4:19 PM

Talk about a game set up for all gain, no pain for OU: If coach Corso can find it, the ESPN Game Day crew will be in Norman. All the world will tune in Saturday night to see who has what.

Notre Dame is a nice eastern-type team. No, not West Virginia eastern. Far better than that.

Notre Dame has some pros on defense, particularly near the line.

But its offense is Ivy League. It's routine. One quarterback hands off. One slings it as best he is able.

Notre Dame will try to slow down the game, run, short passes, hope Landry goes back into his reverse fumble game.

But here's the story: OU's defense might outscore Notre Dame's offense.

The weather will change markedly. But it will be colder Saturday night, no moisture.

It is unlikely that OU can run a lick against Notre Dame. Everybody excited about OU's run game has forgotten that it looked good against one of the worst defenses ever, Texas.

But if Landry is on his game, OU can pass Notre Dame into oblivion.

Think about the mounting frustration from the K-State game, simply handing over 14 points on a platter.

A highly ranked eastern team. Mike Stoops taking a bite out of his headset.

It's all good.

Pick, would you rate this as a "Big" game, under the theory that OU may still be in the MNC hunt, or as a "Medium" one?

Soko: Yours is a good question.

Obviously a game aimed at getting you into position for a national title is not as big as a game that keeps you on top.

So Kansas State was a bigger game than Notre Dame. And how big can a game actually be when you're favored 9 or 10 at home?

But since it stands to reason that the best of the highest ranked 1-loss team could play for the BCS title, and since fair is fair, yes, we'll place the big game tag on this one.

But as everybody knows there are two levels of Big Games. This is Big Game Level 2. To reach Big Game Level 1 you have to win three Big Games in a row.

Sorry, Picker. As much as I want OU to win, there is an ND jinx – perhaps from the “golden dome in the sky”. I have put our home color movie of the winning 1957 drive on my computer. I have tried to “photoshop” it to show Dick Lynch tripping before reaching the end zone. But, no matter what, he always scores.

OU beat ND 40-0 in 1956 but all you hear is, "ND beat OU in '57 to stop the 47 game winning streak!" It's kind of like Oklahoma State bragging everytime they beat OU. Yeah...right. Oklahoma State beats OU about once every 9 years.

Any thoughts on talking about how bad you missed this one? You seem to only want to talk about the ones you picked right. Which granted, you do a good job on most games, but not all games.

Yeah, that explanation would be interesting.

Out Pick The Picker

The Picker began entertaining – and infuriating – sports fans in 1993. Each week during football season, he writes about his picks of college and NFL games in his Thursday Sports column. He's never afraid of sharing his opinions about the game and the personalities who play it. Readers have a chance to go against him each season in the Outpick the Picker contest. He welcomes the competition.
