Observations from a football weekend

The first full weekend of football -- with the NFL finally joining high schools and colleges at the table -- provided some interesting moments.

Here are a few observations.

1. The NFL preseason and the NFL regular season are not equal
How seriously do NFL teams take the preseason? Just look at the regular season to find out.

Teams who seemed almost destitute in the preseason came out with world-beater efforts in this week's openers -- I'm looking at you New York Jets.

The difference could really be seen with some of the rookie quarterbacks -- at least the ones not named RGIII.

By most accounts, Andrew Luck and Ryan Tannehill had decent preseasons. On the first day of the regular season the pair combined to go 43-of-81 for 528 yards with one touchdown, six interceptions and six sacks.

The game is a lot harder when defenses game plan and turn up the intensity.

2. I love RGIII
I'm not ashamed. I'm a huge fan of Robert Griffin III. For my money, he was the most exciting player that suited up in the NCAA last year.

I don't know how long his NFL success will last -- 320 yards and two touchdowns in a winning debut against the Saints was pretty special -- but I'm glad to see he's experiencing some NFL glory.

3. Brandon Weeden isn't ready for the NFL
He'll surely get better. He really can't get worse -- assuming he isn't benched in the near future.

But through the preseason and one regular season start, I think we can safely conclude that despite his age or pro baseball experience, Weeden isn't NFL ready.

I blogged about it before the draft (you can read it here), but there was reason to wonder how his game would translate.

Weeden would have been a steal in the middle of the draft. He was a huge risk in the first round.

He may one day turn into a good pro, but it doesn't appear his age or maturity made him any more NFL ready than the other rookie quarterbacks in this class.
