Olbermann to Showers

Fast-talker Keith Olbermann is no longer on MSNBC.

Olbermann is from the Bill Hurt "Broadcast News" school of acting: Talk fast and don't flub your words and project yourself into stuff, and you'll be just fine.

Most cable news is biased. Not quite all cable news is as angry as Olbermann's anything-for-ratings approach.

What does this have to do with sports?

Hopefully nothing.

Olbermann used to talk fast for ESPN. Sports has enough homers and haters.

For the 190th straight day George Bush is the WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD! How DARE you SIR!!....SIR!!

I would watch Keith Olbermann every day if I had the money to relace a smashed television....every day.

Apparently you never watch FoxNews!!

Cable news networks are highly segmented niche markets. They have the same cognitive heft found on rasslin' shows, and most anything on the "worldwide leader."

Choosing the most offensive of the bunch is a Rorschach Test of political persuasions. However, journalism schools and fact-checking outfits have put together an audit trail.

It is perhaps telling that the aforementioned rasslin' shows almost uniformly carry higher ratings than any of the cable news networks.

Olbermann is a complete media hack. No other commentary is needed.

"Most cable news is biased."

All news is biased. Regardless of broadcast method.

FB, yeah, just like sports.

Olbermann is not a news journalist but he is far more careful with his facts and fact-checking than Fox News [sic].

Don't worry, Keith thinks of himself far too highly to go back to sports.

Reality may set in at some point for him.

MSNBC factchecking? Seriously?
James Young (2 years ago)
Compare the allegations and analysis from Olbermann's old chow or Rachel Maddow's show to Hannity or Beck and you'll see that KO and RM are far more careful with facts and fact-checking than GB and SH.

Seriously? Yes, please check.

Mr. Young,

You never finished your defense the other day about the following Olbermann statement:

"In short, in Scott Brown we have an irresponsible, homophobic, racist, reactionary, ex-nude model, Tea Bagging supporter of violence against women, and against politicians with whom he disagrees. In any other time in our history, this man would have been laughed off the stage as an unqualified and a disaster in the making by the most conservative of conservatives. Instead, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts is close to sending this bad joke to the Senate of the United States."

Are you still of the deluded opinion that the above statement is factually correct?

I used to like Olbermann's shtick back in his ESPN days, but he took himself way, way too seriously once his forehead settled down 3 inches in front of the MSNBC's camera.

About the only honest, non-scripted or prepared moment I ever saw from him happened a couple of years ago when he made a guest appearance on "The Soup". When the host announced a commercial break, Olbermann giggled a bit and said, "You have sponsors?"

I mean, everyone here does realize that MSNBC's ratings stank...big time. Say what you will about Fox News and I certainly won't defend their content, but Fox's sorry excuse for a morning show got better ratings than Olbermann and he had the most "popular" show on MSNBC. Comcast is going to clean house once they settle in, perhaps Olbermann saw the writing on the wall?

Have to disagree with most of you. Olbermann was, in my humble opinion, a patriot who stood up for the constitution when it was being carefully circumvented by Bush and his cronies to the applause of a free-spending republican congress (the same folks who are now criticizing Obama for his spending). Did Olbermann become angry? You bet you *ss...as was I. But I never heard him make a false statement that he didn't admit to later. And please, don't compare him to Beck, Hannity, or Limbaugh; these guys make Goebbels look like Walter Cronkite. And I realize Olbermann came from a sports announcing background, but what the heck is this doing in a sports blog???

Olbermann can't go back to ESPN, he considers himself to be much more the show than any athlete could be...I've heard that Les Miles is going to hire him to be his spokesperson at LSU????

Sadly, I hoped Jay wouldn't let his right wing views drift into a sports blog, but he just couldn't help it.Ferris, what about the remarks on Brown were not correct?
Canefan (2 years ago)
wgspost, those same issues of "circumventing" the constitution are still happening under obama. Heck, he even taken some aspects of the patriot act a step farther.

I can visualize MSNBC doing a happy dance and toasting a toast.

With Keith, the glass was always half-empty.

Canefan, Obama's primary political flaw is that he has been far too weak, as was the democratic congress during it's brief two-year life cycle. Obama apparently doesn't have the courage to approach politics with the same set of b*lls the republicans have swung around for the better part of a decade. I'm not aware of any extension or expansion of the pathetic Patriot Act under Obama, but I do know that he's done virtually nothing to undo the harm done under Bush. A far wiser one that I once said that the democrats and republicans are each a puppet on different hands of the same puppeteer; I suspect there's truth to this to the extent that they're all bought and sold by the big lobbies. Sad, sad, state of affairs.

As he cleaned out his desk, Olbermann was asked what he thought of all the right wing crowing regarding his ouster. He turned and replied: "Haters gonna hate" before strutting away.
sokodad (2 years ago)
I smiled at this one, Pick-man. In the words of the former anchor, "Great thanks."
Blue&Gold (2 years ago)
OLbermann was hired to present the political news of the day from his point of view which was obviously skewed to the left...the same as Bill O'Reilly (or in Olbermann's world, Bill O The Clown, the Worst Person in the World) is skewed to the right, except MSNBC never tried to pass their leftist view off as "Fair and Balanced". There is absolutely nothing fair and balanced about Fox News.
