SEATTLE – Friday night, about 7:30. Oklahoma State football players, in town to compete with Washington State on Saturday, were milling around their hotel lobby.
Tight ends Brandon Pettigrew and Ben Bailey lingered near an upscale coffee counter. Lounging on lobby furniture were quarterback Zac Robinson, safety Ricky Price and special-teams specialist Taylor Sokolosky, along with members of their families.
The topic of conversation? It wasn't football. It was Republican politics – specifically, presumptive presidential nominee John McCain's selection of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate.
Robinson, who describes himself as being a staunch Republican, seemed particularly interested in how Palin's involvement might impact the November election.
These guys are jocks, but they aren't dumb jocks. That stereotype really doesn't apply to most major-college athletes.
