One of the Good Guys Gets Hired

Southern Illiniois will be getting one of the most charismatic and likeable coaches in college basketball when it hires Barry Hinson.
The Salukis already know that. Hinson used to coach against SIU when he was the coach at Missouri State.
It is pretty hard to find anyone, including the people responsible for firing him at Missouri State, that don’t like Hinson.
Plus, his record at Missouri State was great in many respects.
The NCAA Tournament Selection Committee cost Hinson his job at Missouri State. Three times, Misosuri State had an RPI clearly good enough to be included in the NCAA Tournament field but was passed over.
Missouri State lived on the NCAA Tournament bubble while Hinson was coach. Unfortunately the bubble kept getting burst.
In the end, Missouri State said the failure to reach the NCAAs was the reason that Hinson had to go.
Hinson was a home run in just about every way at Missouri State. The Bears won games. His teams played hard and were entertaining. There was never even a hint of scandal.
And, for the most part, Missouri State fans, media, administrators and opposing coaches loved the guy.
So, Hinson gets another chance. Southern Illinois probably gained a lot of fans around the country on Wednesday. Hinson’s got a lot of friends.
He’s spent the past four years on the staff of Kansas coach Bill Self, an old friend that gave Hinson his first college coaching job as an assistant for Self at Oral Roberts.
Don’t be surprised if you start seeing a few Southern Illinois basketball shirts floating around Tulsa.
