Only Homers Could Put OU Number One Now
Published: 8/9/2011 2:53 PM

OU was a fragile number one in the first place.

After losing one of its best players for the Florida State game, and who knows what else after that, it's sinks to barely being a top ten team.

The offense is good, not great, because the quarterback has been poor on the road. Who is the runner? Offensive line iffy.

The defense under Venables has always given up a lot of home run balls. It's why he's still at OU. Now the defense is under intense pressure.

Would a run of horrible luck and what have you done for us lately questions start a Stoops watch at Ohio State?

The Sooners will be just fine.
But What Do I Know? (last year)
No way Mike is leaving 'Zona.

OU secondary hasn't been the same since the days of Randy Hughes.....br2

Ohio State would be a downgrade for Stoops, for Bob anyway, and a parallel move for Mike. I agree, I don't see it.

Wow, you need to leave the state of Oklahoma once or twice. U of A a parallel move to Ohio State. Are you 9 years old?

I believe OSU has the largest athletic dept budget in the country and has THE MOST BCS appearances and THE MOST BCS WINS. U of A, zero and zero. I know everyone has opinion, but your post is laughable.

picker there are plenty of "homers" out there that can do just that!!

Fans who admit it are just fine with us. It's the ones who go as ultimate authorities that we're after.

I thought the Sooners had blue-chip recruite 7-10 deep at every position????

Hasn't Travis Lewis been hurt since he arrived on campus ???? Actually, I had thought he had graduated because if team depends on a one player defense then how can they be #1....

If they were so shallow on defense then how come it wasn't reported on beforehand, you know, one of those "they're pretty good but if they lose one player they suck" kinda stories.... From what I read in the local rags they were as solid as the Rock of Gibralter cruising to undefeated showdowns with Okie St & then Alabama....

I hate reading & believing, I guess I'd better stick with watching & knowing....

Lewis was/is the best player on the defensive team. Box was second best. Lose 1-2, that's usually meaningful

Foot injuries linger on even past when they are supposedly healthy again. What should be healed in eight weeks may actually take all season to recover from.

Snicker is right, them ‘Boomers have lost their one/two Defensive punch that will soften the middle of Vendables “D” But back up, super sophomore Corey Nelson is a stud & will be playing on Sundays
Running teams like Fl St & A&M will look to pound the ball, keep the clock moving, test the depth of OU’s “D” & try & keep OU’s offense on da’ bench

But w/ Austin Box gone & uncertainty whether Ronnell Lewis DE will qualify due to grades, OU’s depth @ “D” has taken a hit & could spell some concern once the meat of Big 12(10) conference play begins.

Nelson may be good in the future but if he is as good as everyone talks why is he not on the field to begin with? Isn't it the coaches job to get the BEST 11 players somewhere out on the field? Apparerntly he is not quite as good as people are already making him out to be because he was not a starter....

The local rags talk up all the players and make them all All Americans. It sells papers. All the ou fans take it as gospel and then want to throw everyone under the bus when things do not work out like the rags said. Hook, line and sinker!!!!

So yes there will be some drop off. Especially with one of his first starts being in a hostile environment in front of 80k fans. Lewis was the leader/heart of the D. Who is going to step up?
hootie (last year)
My bad 32CCSSooner. From what on the radio, nelson was not a starter. I could not find anything in print. Lewis may not the same caliber as the others you listed but he is still the leader on OUs D and he wsa the Defensive Player of the year. Still very hard to replace. There will still be a drop off.

Picker, I notice you deleted the comment I made stating OU couldn't keep Box on the field without painkillers. Let's not confuse the issue with the truth. Let us all Ignore the less than glorious side of collegiate athletics and win at all costs.

208291, I didn't delete that, I only work here. Somebody must have reported it as being too harshly against the grain.

Homer must have gotten tied up at Walgreen's. Odd that he hasn't commented on this gem, yet.

With the death of Austin Box and the injury to Travis Lewis, OU is probably gonna have to play more 3-4 and maybe mix in some 4-2-5. Not sure if they can play a 4-3 defense as effectively with question marks at Middle linebacker and now at weakside linebacker.

For the person who wrote that Mike Stoops moving from U of A to Ohio State would be a lateral move.....c'mon.

Ohio State has the largest athletic budget in the country and the second largest number of alumni. Oh, and by the way, they hold the record for most BCS bowl appearances (9) and most BCS bowl wins (6). U of A, zero and zero.
