Memphis over UCLA.

Kansas over North Carolina.

Kansas over Memphis.

Anything else I can get for you today?

Congrats just arrived from Tokyo, Kansas and Canada. This site is alive with success.

When you hit upset picks one after the other like that, it confirms the accuracy of other opinions as well.

Such as: OSU needs to land Self, as anything less would be compared to Sean. Hiring the Kentucky coach, please, he can't win at Kentucky.

Such as: You can hear the teeth of OU media homers chattering simply because OSU is in Self's ballpark.

Such as: KU's game-tying three-pointer was the best game-ending play in the history of college basketball -- great dribbling, astounding pass, sensational shot against tough defense.

Such as: The Memphis coach cost his team the game.

Such as: Announcer Billy Packer blew the last of the game by not discussing the sheer incompetence of Memphis not fouling.

Such as: Dick Vitale should go call a shuffleboard game on a cruise ship.

Such as: The referees in the final game were brilliant.

Such as: We're working on a new game called -- Who Said It, A Certain Local Sports Radio and TV Host or President Bush?

Such as: We're working on a new impression of a local meteorologist -- "Basketball-sized hail is coming, ooooh, that's bad. But it might be sunny tomorrow, ooooh, that's good."

Such as: We're surprised more TU hoop fans didn't say this -- "We just won a below-average basketball tournament by defeating below average teams at home, but had a lot of fun doing so. It's a little hard to say if the team is improved or if we just played lesser competition. Next year will not be considered a success unless we reach the NCAA tournament. Or at the very least, win at least one game in the NIT."

Such as: OU baseball has been lousy for way too long.

Such as: Guess the number of minorities in the gallery at the elitist Masters, over or under six?

Such as: I'll take the field against Tiger.

Mr. Picker, I've got you faded on your proposition to take the field this weekend.

You're on, Gene, Tiger is even-money so it's a resonably fair contest. The prize, the Fried Platter at Fair Meadows? Maybe something a bit classier.....

Picker you are correct that the OU homers on the radio don’t want self at OSU. I just heard Jim Traber and Mark Rogers talk about how Kansas needed to make Self an offer and put to rest any talk of him going to Stillwater. It’s the way they advocated it that made it so telling.

Pat was on again today talking about how Calipari wouldn’t be a good fit in Stillwater. This is a guy who coached and lived in Amherst, Mass., a town of 35,000 that is truly in the middle of nowhere. I guess Pat hasn’t spent much time in Western Mass.

These guys on the Sports Animal are the same jokers who were saying not to rule out Bill Self to OU when Sampson left because he would have the opportunity to go back home to the State of Oklahoma. Granted, it was when he was catching some heat for those first round exits but it was still delusional and ridiculous. Now they are practically begging him to stay in Lawrence. Do they even listen to what they say?
world picker (5 years ago)
Chris, coach Pat makes Stillwater sound like the La Brea Tar Pits.

And just when did Norman turn into Santa Monica?

Pickens seems to be a pretty good fit for OSU. Who wouldn't fit in well with money?

If OSU gets a great coach Al and Dean might need oxygen.
Chris R (5 years ago)
Can you imagine if Self had played at OU and the OU job was open right now? Al and Dean would be all bout how great it would be for Self to come back home and build a Dynasty and that there is a 75% chance of him makking the move. Their lack of objectivity is staggering.

They are now talking about how OSU should move on from Self and hire a coach they can get before recruiting is finished. Truly comical.
world picker (5 years ago)
At any moment, the radio people will suggest that OSU contact for its next coach: John Phillips.
world picker (5 years ago)
....and the other day, a caller suggested in all seriousness that OSU should quickly contact the TU coach!

See why you shouldn't operate heavy machinery while listening......
chris (5 years ago)
Picker,

It truly is unreal how biased the Sports Animal has been with it's Self to OSU talk.

If it was OU's coaching search (two years ago with Calipari) they were convinced he was coming and that it was a great fit.

What a bunch of jokers. OSU is not gonna land Self, but that doesn't mean he didn't listen. He will and probably decide to stay...At least for now.
Village Smithey (5 years ago)
The Aggies had better hope that Boone's deep pockets will bring Self home because this is the closest they'll come to bringing a top-name coach to Stillwater in their lifetimes. Pickens just might finally realize that he isn't pouring his money down a hole with OSU roundball like his has been doing by donating to their football program. Calipari to OSU? Yeah, right. It'll never, ever happen. And Chris, am I correct in assuming that you don't have a job? You either work nights assembling burritos at Taco Bell or you're cheating your employer by hunting-and-pecking across the keyboard during business hours. Way yonder too much free time, there, pard.
Chris R (5 years ago)
But Calipari would go to Norman right Smithey?

There is more than one Chris posting as well.

Me, I am a lawyer In NYC (OU grad no less). You Smithey?

PS What's a pard?
MIKE (5 years ago)
WP, a few bones to pick quickly. If OSU doesn't land Self, I think Jamie Dixon from Pitt would still suffice. Not to mention the fact that there are strong rumors that both Bruce Pearl and Calipari have expressed interest in the position as well (I do agree that Gillespie would be a bad hire). Also, I don't know what last play you were watching but I didn't see any sort of astounding pass or great dribbling. The player started stumbling as he approached the wing of the 3 point line and scooped the ball to Chalmers who was standing 2 feet away from him. It was an amazing shot though and definitely one that will go down as one of the greatest...the play actually seemed eerily similar to the one made by John Lucas for OSU in the Elite 8 back in 2004.
Village Smithey (5 years ago)
Calipari to Norman? Yeah, in some futuristic, poorly-written WB screenplay, perhaps. But not in reality. Chris, if you're an OU grad you'll recall the silly flirtation the Sooners initiated with John Robinson (Sr) years ago; that was a joke as well. No, I'm afraid it'll take many years of consistent living at the top of college basketball's pyramid before any established, winning coach will leave a top-flight program (e.g. NCaro, Louisville, KU) to move to the state calling the Scissor-tale its state bird. And the move will probably take this fictitious coach to Stillwater rather than Norman because of the obvious. And, Chris, If my barbs flew your way in error, my apologies. Some other Chris had the temerity to call me pompous a few blogs back; and while this may be true, I don't suffer the epithet well when coming from hillbillies.
Village Smithey (5 years ago)
Pard: Etymology: alteration of partner (colloquialism)
Pardner: one associated with another especially in an action : associate, colleague b: either of two persons who dance together c: one of two or more persons who play together in a game against an opposing side d: a person with whom one shares an intimate relationship : one member of a couple.
Hope this helps.
Chris R (5 years ago)
Smithey,

No offense taken.

Was the Robinson talk to OYU when tubbs was hired?

I am an OSU grad as well and that is where my primary loyalties lie.

The point of my posting has been about how the media portray Stillwater as being a deterent to any coaching search. This stuff is coming from people that never spend any time there.

In actuality, the two towns aren't that different.
frank (5 years ago)
Mr. Picker, I have always enjoyed your columns. Your playfulness and insights have always been fun as well as provocative. But, I'm afraid that lately you've been stepping over the fine line that enters into meanness.
Village Smithey (5 years ago)
Chris, you're quite right. I've also studied on both campuses and while my loyalties lie in Norman, I will say (and have said often) that the campus in Stillwater is the prettier of the two. And scholastically, there is probably not a nickel's worth of difference in the undergraduate areas...but let's talk football, shall we? ;)
Village Smithey (5 years ago)
Frank...you've got to be joking. The Picker...? Mean? Unkind? You must be confusing him with Sittler...you'll find him back a page, click on the right, and you're there...
Jeff (5 years ago)
Chris R,

You're a lawyer in NYC, but listening to the Sports Animal? If you are indeed in NYC, then you must surely be streaming the radio station over the internet. My question to you: "Why?"

Surely there is a better way to satisfy your eardrums than by contaminating them with sports talk radio from the state of Oklahoma. Music, politics, or service oriented talk radio are all better options than sports talk, especially "The Animal."

But that's all beside the point. Never having lived in either Stillwater or Norman, but having spent lots of time there (friends went to both institutions), I can in fact tell you the two towns are different, and appeal to different kinds of people. This is not to say one is better than the other. They are just different. Norman is closer to a major city than is Stillwater. Stillwater offers a more reserved, rural setting than does Norman. And while we're all Oklahomans, people are different in any town you go to, no matter the sizes or similarities.

I, for one, do not think Stillwater would be the reason a coach would turn down an offer from OSU. Nor do I think it will be the reason an offer was accepted. Depending upon who's hired, it MAY play A role, but will not (at least SHOULD not) be the determining factor. But saying the two places, Norman and Stillwater, are "not all that different" is to ignore the personalities of the citizens of and the facts about both fine cities.

Countdown until the Picker unleashes a snide column about Blake Griffin "announcing" he will stay in school: 5, 4, 3, 2, 1...
world picker (5 years ago)
Frank, mean to TU basketball? Mean to whom? You like your media in cheerleading gear? Or real? Pick it. If somebody doesn't agree with
you, it's mean?

One minute, TU says it welcomes support from objective fans from OU and OSU and elsewhere; if we give this support, does that mean we have to buy into this "national championship" talk about the most recent basketball tournament victory?

No kidding, somebody said the hoop title was a national championship.

I go to almost all TU football games and many TU basketball games. There's a company line that has to be followed?

Moreover, why must the media be considred a source of support instead of an objective observer?

The record speaks for itself in the long run.

CBI Tournament champion t-shirts, 3 for a dollar. They feature the new slogan of Tulsa basketball: "We're number 98! We're number 98!"
world picker (5 years ago)
Matthew, I was out collecting Final Four picking rewards, sorry I'm late on the Griffin bulletin. But your wishes are my marching orders.

I think it is extremely wise for anybody whose shots occasionally hit the underside of the rim to return to the college arena for more polish.

That player can sure jump. A better jump shot will undoubtedly bring him something like $1.1 billion per season, half guaranteed; or whatever the going rate will be year after next.

The only regret is that with the young man's return to OU, the Sports Animal radio people will now have the Sooners in their top two teams nationally next years, instead of the top four.

According to an unnamed source, they will have the OU football team ranked somewhere between first and third, even though Mr. Venables is still on hand and has few corners. Speaking of football, does the remote possibility exist that qb Bradford is not quite as yet all-world?
Matthew (5 years ago)
Picker, what is your preseason top 5 in college football?
world picker (5 years ago)
Just got off the horn with Al and Dean.
The pre-season poll looks like this:
1. OU
2. OU
3. OU
4. OU
5. LSU

Actually, pre-season polls are evil and shouldn't be recorded until October 1.
Objective Fan (5 years ago)
Picker: I can't believe they rated LSU as high as fifth! Did they forget about OU's scout team?
