Pass the fish bones to wrap in sports journalism

Sports journalism continues to plunge to new lows.

ESPN is a parade of nerds.

In this week's barely pertinent Sports Illustrated, the story on the OU-Oregon game is about how Oregon's runner out-played OU's runner.

By virtue of being hoodwinked out of a victory, OU is suddenly the heavy because it's mad.

The solution is simple. Money. Oregon should give OU some of it's bowl money, case closed.

Amen Sister.
We were/are flirting.
It was your dislike of crying lowlife idiots that first attracted us.

Listen, is there an aiport up there?
Or are we talking bus.
Echo (6 years ago)
Cheryl you are entitled to your opinion about Oklahomans. However, I think it's a little harsh to call all of us OU fans a bunch of crying idiots. As far as the death threats that were supposedly made by OU fans...do we in fact know for sure that any calls were made? If a threat was in fact made, do we know that it was an OU fan? It could have been made by anyone posing as an OU fan, knowing that it would reflect poorly on us, the state of Oklahoma. I am going to guess that "if" in fact you came from the state of Oklahoma that you might be an aggie.:) Honey, you live in Oregon now..keep it in Oregon, we don't need your assessment of the situation.

I find it sad that Boren does not have bigger things to worry about than a football game. Besides, has ou volunteered to wipe the UAB game off the books, due to a blown call?
No.

I have noticed a lack of integrity shown by ESPN on more than one occasion...and it is getting worse. Kirk Herbreit had on his scarlet and gray glasses when he suggested that Adrian Peterson was "knocked down" in the Heisman race because OU lost. True, it's hard for a star player on a 5-6 team to win the Heisman, but knocking AD down in the chase for college football's MVP trophy because OU lost a squeaker (and a controversial one at that) is just plain silly. I'll expect him to knock Troy Smith down a peg or two if OSU loses a close game...even if Troy has a great statistical showing. And Cheryl, I am not going to argue with you that OU had opportunities to win the game, and that the defense played horribly. But you know what? OREGON MADE SOME MISTAKES TOO! They didn't play a flawless game. In fact, OU made the one key played it needed to come out a winner that day...it covered the onside kick. Forget that the officials didn't throw a flag for illegal touching...or for offsides...or for interfering with a Sooner trying to field the kick inside the 10 yard barrier...FORGET ALL OF THAT...the Sooners recovered the fumble, and would have taken a knee. Look, bad calls happen all the time...BUT THIS WAS THE WORSE CALL IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL HISTORY. They blew it big time on the field, then the replay official blew it the booth. Finally, as for the national sports media, the thing that disappoints me the most is the constant outcry toward Stoops, Boren, and the Sooner nation to let it go. Sure, Boren went overboard...but he was fighting for his players and his coach when they felt the team was cheated. I HAVE NOT HEARD ONE NATIONAL SPORTS PERSON SAY THAT IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THE OFFICIALS WERE CORRUPT. I am not saying that they cheated deliberately (although I feel they did to a certain extent), but noone will admit that is possible. Some players cheat (steroids, point shaving, etc.), some coaches cheat (Kelvin Sampson, recruiting stuff, etc.), and some referees cheat. Just because a man puts on a striped shirt does not make automatically make him a picture of integrity. Thinking this way is just plain naive. Are most officials of high integrity? Sure. Just like most players and coaches are. But one or two will cheat. I am disappointed that an investigation (ARE YOU FREAKING LISTENING NCAA????) is not being done.
Jeremy (6 years ago)
And let me add...the NCAA needs to grow some common sense when it comes to nonconference games. It need to put nuetral officials on the field and in the booth. There is no reasn that a crew from the WAC or Big Ten or Mountain West couldn't work that game. And for all games (even conference), if the referees of replay official live within walking distance of the field...it's probably not a good idea to have them work that game. THIS IS COMMON FREAKING SENSE.

What's wrong with Oregon sending OU some of its bowl money?

Since it's all about money, pay up and all is forgiven.

The national sports media is too busy projecting itself into a story to be objective.

If there's not a woman on the ESPN screen, I don't pay much attention.

One more thing. We're not even remotely tired of hearing about the OU-Oregon mess.

The alternative is watching former actor Danny Glover hug the president of Venezuela.
Wolfie (6 years ago)
Focus on winning the Texas game. It could mean your own bowl money.
Jeremy (6 years ago)
You are right on Mr. Picker. I get so mad every time somebody say "OU needs to move on", or the like. I think it is especially humorous when it comes from an ESPN moron, as they want all of this swept under the rug. They are so scared of airing something that could damage them that they fail to objectively report the facts...or at least the facts from several points of view. I am not tired of talking about this for one reason...and it has nothing to do with wanting the game overturned. If a situation like this doesn't cause the NCAA and the conferences to take a close look at officiating, the scheduling of officials at certain games in particular, then nothing will. I guarantee you that a few boosters out there loaded with $$$$$ will attempt to buy a local official, and they can say to them "hey, even if you blow an obvious call, the worse thing that will happen to you is a one game suspension!!" ESPN should be leading the charge for change...not turning their bakcs and looking the other way. And Wolfie, I am quite sure the OU is getting ready for Middle Tennnessee first, and then UT...but even if they win every other game this season (they won't with that D), the Oregon game will cost them a shot at all the marbles.
world picker (6 years ago)
Jeremy, your mind is operating at an extremely high level of efficiency.

You "get over" bad calls.

You "whine" about where balls bounce out.

Reflecting on an injustice is good citizenship.

Say, Jeremy, do you agree with us that the Houston game is purely and simply OSU's defining moment this year?

That a lost to a rinky-dink Houston team would bring back memories of tin-stadium days?
Jeremy (6 years ago)
Well, I don't know about defining moment, but it at least serves as the first true litmus test for the Pokes this season. If they win it, they have a reasonable chance to win both road games coming up in the sunflower state, and be 6-0 when the Aggies come to Stillwater. If they lose, everyone will say it's the same old Pokes of the Big 12...they'll throw a scare into a Big 12 south bully, but finish near the bottom of the standings. Actually, since I did my undergraduate work at Oklahoma State (but I'm not an OSU fan, at least emotionally), I can tell you that the defining moment for the Cowboys typically comes right after the final gun has sounded in the Bedlam game.
world picker (6 years ago)
Didn't the Grambling horn section score twice against Houston?
Wolfie (6 years ago)
Jeremy & Mr. Picker, No argument that it was an agonizng way to lose a game! No argument that the calls were horrendous and inexcusable! No argument that the NCAA officiating system needs reform! If the uproar doesn't have their attention by now, they (like ESPN) are beyond hope! But, at some point doesn't the screaming become counterproductive? I am sure OU is focused on preparing for Middle Tennessee, in spite of the furor around them. The Texas reference was an apparently lame attempt at levity... I know, I know, there's nothing humorous about Texas.
Jeremy (6 years ago)
True enough, Houston hasn't played anybody either...and they aren't exactly known for good defense. OSU should be able to score points, but they could get outscored. I think that Houston has a good enough passing game with a solid QB that let us determine what kind of passing defense the Pokes have, but we still won't know whether they can stop the run. I honestly don't have a clue how good either team is...which is why playing a schedule full of twinkies (I don't particularly care for cupcakes) is a bad deal. Prior to the start of the season, this appeared to be a pivotal game in the Pokes' bowl hopes, but that was before the Big 12 lost a bundle of nonconference games and appeared weaker than advertised.
Jeremy (6 years ago)
Well Wolfie, there is a limit to the amount of "whining" that should be done. When the Sooners got a Lubbock jam job last season, Stoops and Co. basically gave credit to the Red Raiders for the victory, and said little about the calls. In other words, they took the high road. After the Duck plucking, the coaches probably felt that they should stand up for their players, most of which have very vivid memories of Lubbock. Believe me, if ESPN and/or the NCAA (or, heaven forbid, the PAC-10) would come forward and say that the officials and all parties involved would be investigated (interviewed, etc.) for any foul play, then the crying would stop, at least from the coaches and administration. I don't think the Sooner nation has been heard, because I don't think ESPN and the NCAA want to face the possibility that some corruption takes place. Trust me...all that Stoops and Sooner fans want to hear is that the NCAA will look into ways to prevent this type of thing from happening in the future. Nuetral officials in nonconference games, making the officials attend post game news conferences (be accountable for selective blindness), whatever...but something. Those calls weren't bad...they were blown. I am hoping against hope that this sort of thing happens again in the very near future, and to a Notre Dame, then maybe the NCAA and ESPN will stop looking the other way.
Jeremy (6 years ago)
I was disappointed, Mr. Picker, to see after reading your picks that you too had sided with the KSU Wildcats. I was sure that we would differ on that one, but apparently both of us see that game as a bit of a trap for Louisville, and the loss of Brohm and Bush is sure to hurt them sooner or later. I guess great minds think alike (snicker). That line of -10 seemed a little fishy to me, and I've witnessed a game or two in Manhattan during the Snyder era. Those purple people can get loud up there in the plains.
Bob S. (6 years ago)
There's no question that the referees in the Oregon game did not officiate in a good way. Certainly, I would hope these refs in the future will choose to perform in a great way. But I'm not going to speculate on that. See you're trying to get me to speculate, and I'm not going to. I'm not a speculator. Anyway, there's no question that this team will certainly respond in a good way. Maybe in a great way. Certainly. No question. But I'm not going to speculate on that.

The subject just won't die. Roger Judd, who served as the replay assistant in the booth, has said that due to a glitch he was able to provide only one replay from a bad angle for replay offical Riese. With the technology the way it is and the back-ups provided this just doesn't ring true. Methinks Mr. Judd chose to show only one replay, one that wouldn't overturn the on-field ruling. He should answer some questions,
world picker (6 years ago)
If it doesn't die, maybe it'll get fixed.

ESPN finally got around to using its head for something besides a mug shot.

Last night (Thursday on the Georgia Tech broadcast), the two former pinheads finally asked a pertinent question: What were the referees on the field looking at!?
