Pick A Radio Broadcast: TU or OSU?
Published: 9/14/2010 4:01 PM
Last Modified: 9/14/2010 4:03 PM

For reasons (money, money, money) known by many, and understood by one (the OSU AD), the Tulsa-Oklahoma State game will not be on television.

It seems that as long as there is one empty seat in the stadium, OSU football will remain technically impaired. Whereas this policy could sell some tickets, imagine the consequences of the lost exposure to great recruits and their parents -- come to OSU and play in secrecy. And in the polls. OSU who?

So this weekend, we have to pick a radio team, OSU's Squeaky Pistol and his trusty sidekick Ho Hum Hokum, or TU's Bruce "Come on ref, throw a flag, they're piling on and gouging us" Howard, and his caddy, Rick Couri.

Everybody knows that you must love the one you're with, that you must homer in on the one who signs your paycheck. But it is still possible to support the team whose games you broadcast while maintaining a touch of class. The real pros can be excited or disappointed without sounding so local.

We'll take the TU side here in an easy call. Though sometimes you might wonder how the TU crew can spot penalties at the bottoms of stacks of linemen, when Bruce is doing play-play-play, the listener has no doubt whatsoever where the football is, how it got there, and who just might have gotten away with a little something.

I think it's ridiculous that the TU-OSU game isn't televised. If they televised it on Fox Sports Net, I'm sure they'd get a nice sized viewing audience.

I'll take Bruce Howard in a landslide here. Squeaky Pete is way to shrill to listen to.

I can't believe this game is not on TV. Not even on PPV. That is horrible for recruits

Tough choice, do I go with;

"That's gotta be holding! I can't believe the referees are allowing this to happen...okay, now for the opening kickoff..."

or

"Pistols Firing! Goodnight Vienna!! Ah-stalavista, Baby!!! I'll have what she's having!!!!

You know, reading about this the next day is looking good.

Economik - I do not believe that BPS has sold out at all since they increased the stadium size, although I'm sure there were some sellouts prior to the size increase, likely when OU visited. The 2008 OU/OSU game only had an attendance of ~49,000, and the stadium seats ~60,000. Holder is to blame for that, with his stupid "premium" game policy. He basically made sure that those extra 11,000 seats never got sold - to OU OR OSU fans! FWIW, the attendance record is ~58,500 for last year's Texas game. Wikipedia tries to explain that even when though the stadium has never been filled to capacity, there have still been "sellouts", but that sounds extremely hollow.
But What Do I Know? (2 years ago)
Isn't picking Moe Howard is a homer deal? The Stillwater NewsPress picked Pistol Poop.
MexiMike (2 years ago)
Someone New, that is because a "sellout" is considered anything a regular single ticket can be bought for. For instance, the club seats and suites are not available on a single game basis so obviously those tickets cannot be purchased. Every ticket that was available to be purchased for the UT game last year was purchased. That's why it was a "sellout."

People need to get past the "horrible for recruits" crap. First of all, PPV was never offered to OSU for this game. It was a weird satellite feed that would only hit a small area in Oklahoma. With that said, let's not turn this into a situation where OSU is denying recruits all over the nation the opportunity to watch this game.

You get what you pay for when you hire a dang golf coach to run a major university's athletic program. It's either gotta be a legit business man (Castiglione) or a former coach of one of the sports that actually mattered (Tom Osborne, Barry Alvarez to name 2 good ones...)

tattoo: probably need to cool it... you are proving what the picker thinks about us already: that we are ignorant and gullible. The guy that writes this column(i'll leave his name out to preserve the mystery for the 3 people out there who dont know it yet, you being one of them obviously)has written great books that have been made into movies('Let it Ride' and 'Funny Farm' I know for sure) and I seriously doubt he's hangin at his 'bookies house eatin wings'...

Dcood, yeah, you're right. OSU should hire an AD who currently has his athletic department riddled with NCAA investigations and probations. Good call.

Just because you live your life through OU football doesn't mean that the high success level of a different sport's coach cannot be equally as beneficial.

By the way, under Holder the athletic budget is the highest it has ever been. Along with that, OSU has seen the most football season ticket holders ever along with the highest average attendances ever.

Couldnt be more off base Mexi... So i guess we should all take OSU's model of running an athletic department.. Is it just coincidence that the orange people are the only 'big time' program in the nation led by the golf coach? That's gotta be the answer if OSU is doing it after all... BTW, not even an OU fan bro but hard to ignore the financial success. OU one of the few depts in the nation whose athletic department is in black numbers financially. Their game with Tulsa not being on pay per view at the very least is brutal, anyway you wanna slice it.

Tattoo is a sad case. He is addicted to this site, can't stay away, too bad he has no friends or they could stage an intervention. Let's see how long he can sit quietly with his own creepy thoughts.

MMike, so players don't mind not being on TV? Sounds like you believe OSU can do no wrong.
'50s man (2 years ago)
I am old enough to remember hearing the old great sports announcers like Bill Stern, Ted Husing, Red Barber, and Harry Wismer. Bruce Howard is as good or better than those men.

To see how difficult it is to call an athletic contest like basketball and football, turn the sound off of the game on TV and try your hand at doing the play-by-play. It is quite difficult to keep up with what is happening as well as providing extra information as the play. progresses.

Did I tell you!

This guy belongs at B. Ford!

Somebody get a shrink quick.
The Picker (2 years ago)
Ok, fun's over, get the nets on this guy.

50's man, you're right, Bruce is terrific, you know exactly what's happening on the field, he paints a great picture.

Picker, you are the GREATEST agitater of all time, you get posters to make comments in such anger about something so silly as to what radio station to listen to.
Great comments, I salute you all.
HuskerJake (2 years ago)
At a C-note a ticket, why bother with Stillwater?? Build the program first, then raise prices. As for being on TV, UT might be the bigger draw!
MexiMike (2 years ago)
Dcood, it's great that OU is doing so well financially but that doesn't shade the fact that under Castiglione, OU has seen multiple violations and probations in multiple sports. USC was a huge money maker, too. Did that save their AD from being fired after the NCAA brought the hammer down on them?

Pick, yes. The players love to be on TV. And they will be on TV for most if not all the conference season. But I really doubt any are going to cry over spilled milk because a random local satellite feed that hardly anyone has isn't going to show the game.

OK, tattoo, this is getting fun... Go to any video rental store and rent the film "Let it Ride" starring Richard Dreyfus(sp?) and after you enjoy the movie (a hidden classic IMO), read the credits and it will say 'based on the book by --- -------. This name I wont reveal on here out of respect for the Picker, is the same person who writes this column... and apparently irritates the sh*t out of you!
