Pick of the Litter

We'll take Cal over USC this weekend.

Arkansas deserves better than it's getting and needs for the one-loss teams to fall away like old leaves.

After watching West Virginia-Pitt last night, there is this obvious conclusion: Those teams stink at defense.

Don't forget this angle going into the big Ohio State-Michigan game: the public is usually a victim of the obvious and is usually wrong.

Most everybody thinks the passing of coach Bo of Michigan will greatly benefit that team from an emotional perspective.

Which means it won't.

If former OU hit man Roy Williams can keep more than a dozen receivers from getting behind him, Dallas should beat Indy.

And another thing: There's no such thing as a Sports Illustrated jinx.

Sports Illustrated is simply a victim of the obvious like most other sports fans.

It frequently puts the obvious on the cover. Popular opinion. Concensus of opinion. And the next week, the obvious gets its backside kicked.

Interesting opinion on OSU - Michigan. I'm taking the Blackeyes by about two trips into the end zone but, admittedly, when I read of Bo's passing today it made me stop and think...forgetting momentarily my sadness at the passing of an icon, my palms got wet from the anticipation of a ripe, juicy bet falling into my lap. But after consideration I think I agree with you - Ohio State should still spank the Wolverines. Lloyd has never been known as a great motivator regardless of the fodder he has to work with. Oh, and of course there's no SI cover jinx, but it's still fun to play with. I acquired a copy of the November 18, 1957 issue featuring Clendon Thomas on the cover with the biline - Why Oklahoma Can't Lose; of course, they lost to the Irish the following Saturday and hence, the start of the jinx. BTW, Clendon Thomas was nice enough to sign the cover for me and it hangs in my office.
