Picker Versus Media
Published: 3/12/2010 1:27 PM
Last Modified: 3/12/2010 1:27 PM

This question has been asked twice in the last few days. And you know what that means. Maybe a few more are wondering the same thing.

Picker: What do you think when members of the media come after you?

Answer: It means so many good things, we hardly know where to start.

It means, obviously, we got under somebody's skin. Media skin is about as thin as an onion's.

Somehow the media put itself in the position of the ultimate authority -- it sits in the press box chomping on free grub, making judgements without the prospect of being held responsible. The media can dish it freely, but don't like returning pies in the face.

This has been a memorable picking season as, beyond hitting more football winners than anytime in predicting history, we have held media members one and all accountable on the following issues: rotten picking, and being homers. What good is all the blah-blah-blah-analysis if you can't pick the occasional winner? The answer to that one is, you shouldn't pay much attention at all to anybody who shoots his or her mouth off, but couldn't hit the winner of the replay.

The silly TV guys in Oklahoma City once stopped a show to rag on the Picks simply because we had called attention to their kissy-face attitude about a certain coaching staff. A local radio station once did a weekly show about the Picks, until we hit so many they probably had nothing but praise to spread. Even newspaper and radio media people have been know to chase the Picks.

And we all probably know why, don't we.

Um Pick, aren't you a part of the media? I mean you do work for a local paper, correct? And I find it hilarious that you have to reach back to last year's football season to find successful picks. What about your basketball picks? Oh, wait...nevermind.

The media coming after the Picker just proves his point. Especially that dude on from 9-11. Rags and rags on the picker, without realizing he is just proving what the Picker says is right. One of the many reasons i no longer listen to that show.
Keep it up picker, people just don't like hearing the truth.

Commrade Picker,

Please continue your role as the great gadfly to the mentally stunted. I am almost saddened by the insinuation that said individuals are part of the fourth estate unless your comments are in part sarcasm.

Get em little fella!

AMEN! What i love most is when one of the chubby, scotch-ridden press box moochers attempt to question when to blitz or explain cover 2. Those hacks couldnt tell you the difference between cover 2 and 2 of a kind... and that includes Mr. Country Club on channel 9 in OKC. Being Thomas Lott's backup 35 years ago does not a coach make.

Out Pick The Picker

The Picker began entertaining – and infuriating – sports fans in 1993. Each week during football season, he writes about his picks of college and NFL games in his Thursday Sports column. He's never afraid of sharing his opinions about the game and the personalities who play it. Readers have a chance to go against him each season in the Outpick the Picker contest. He welcomes the competition.
