Picks Rescues OSU Football
Published: 1/15/2010 2:18 PM

You can look it up.

Same as always.

Some 54 weeks ago, 55 weeks, somewhere in there, the Picks watched as Oklahoma State ran the option trailing Oregon something like 75-10.
Quarterback Robinson was given a jarring blow that could have measured around 1.1 on the earthquake scale.

It was then that the Picks suggested that it might be a good idea for somebody other than the head coach to call plays, no offense, in more ways than one: head coaching simply sounds like a full-time job.

One chief question was: Is there a single other successful head college coach calling plays?

Then again in July, August, September, October, November, December and January, we suggested that it might be in the best interests of the Cowboy program to shake a little something up offensively in Stillwater.

And so today, rumors swirl and circulate and prevail that a new offensive coordinator is coming to OSU. Can a play-calling switcheroo be far behind?

If, as other administrations have done in the past, OSU has subscribed to the winning Picks philosophy, it is onward and upward for Cowboys.

Well, calm down now, Picker.... OSU will find a way to mess up this idea.  Wait a minute, maybe they already did?  Didn't Dana Holgorsen's offensive machine just get stuffed by Air Force?  Still, Gundy might be on to something here. If he hires everyone who has ever beaten him - all 1,467 assistant coaches - he is sure to out coach his opponents in 2010.

When Steve Spurrier called his own plays at Florida, he was successful. However, I can't think of anyone who currently calls his own plays and is successful. I still think Mike Gundy will call his own plays. Not sure if Gundy wants to give up this power. It would be best if he had someone other than him calling the offensive plays, though.

I just checked the article and found out that the new OC was at Houston preceded by Texas Tech. These two teams run the spread and are pass-happy offenses that lack running games. The spread formation is for teams that lack the talent that better teams have, not for teams that have lots of talent. OSU's running game might suffer as a result of this new hire.

Wow...way to peer into the magic 8-ball picker. Did you also predict the sun would rise in the east this morning?

Who didn't see this coming, or suggest a change be made, 55 weeks ago?

Lance A Little, here's another question you probably figure everybody has thought about: Why on earth hire an offensive coordinator from Houston?

It's like hiring Switzer to replace Paterno at PState. Getting in on the end of a rinky-dink phase, who needs that? Anybody how mighty Houston finished the season? TBone Stake made a sorry call here.

Houston's defense is the reason they finished the way that they did. Not their offense. Look up the stats. Houston's offense was in the top 5, if not top 3, in every category. Another one of the Picker's arguments goes swirling down the toilet.

Holgorsen made due with the talent that he had at prior schools. If anyone thinks that he will not utilize the stable of stud RBs OSU has, they are sorely mistaken.

Gundy has already made a great coordinator hire in Bill Young. Watch and learn as history repeats itself.

Well Licker, ask a question, get an answer.

Why the Houston OC? I am going to say it is because nobody else wanted to go work in Stoolwater. Would YOU want to work for Gumby?

Also, I assume you meant to say "anybody know how mighty Houston finished...". Yes Licker, we know, that is why we are laughing at OSU's fultility. They are the new Texas Tech, only not nearly as good.

Still, my (very) valid point remains. Why are you asking for props for pointing out the obvious? Does your poor ego need a little back rub?
