Poll Ax
Published: 7/7/2009 2:41 PM

Fans have only one hope when it comes to the mockery that has become college football under the BCS: AP poll voters.

The poll of coaches is evil.

The computer stuff is nonsense.

The AP voters always have the opportunity to save the season by creating a fair representation of the college scene; but the voters are too worried about their own images to list a REAL poll.

The season's first poll is the most important: it dooms some to an impossible game of catch-up and places others far too high.

The AP poll gives fair-minded people a chance to hold some chickens accountable.

Two highly regarded teams SHOULD NOT be in the pre-season top ten.

They are: Texas and Penn State.

Here's why: Cowardly non-conference schedules.

Texas: Louisiana Monroe, Wyoming, UTEP, Central Florida.

Penn State: Akron, Syracuse, Temple, Eastern Illinois.

Texas should start out ranked 12th, Penn State 17th.

If they're afraid to play one decent team in the pre-season, they should be held responsible.

As Texas wins, move it up.

But to start Texas out in the top five is to over-reward sissy-like behavior.

In the first poll, get 'em out of here.

I may be wrong Pick, but didn't a couple of teams back out of playing Texas in this season's OOC schedule leading to it looking like it does?

By the way, as long as hacks like Kirk Herbstreit have AP votes, that poll will be just as useless and crooked. He lost my respect when he went on national television saying that OSU should not move down in the polls after the Texas loss and then turned around and cast his vote for them to move down.

What a joke.

Meximike...Im pretty sure you're right about the texas OOC schedule thing. and I couldn't agree with you more about herbstreit, or other AP voters for that matter.

The AP is the reason why the Big 10(+1), Pac 10, and Notre Dame get ranked year in and year out way over where they should be and its a joke. Every year its the same song and dance and the same people saying it.

The problem is that there are too many AP voters who cover big 10 and pac 10 country and who have soft spots for ND. Balance out the numbers better and I'd agree, but the way the system is now its never going to be fair.

They shouldn't have any sort of polls or rankings untill week 6, because untill then we don't know squat about most teams.

Speaking of Texas, anybody hear from "Deep in the Heart"......???......he was suppose to bring that national baseball crown back with him from Omaha........maybe he'll hop aboard and post that he'll return from California in January with the national football crown.....lol

Ditto "Have that's" last sentence.

I also agree with Have That's last statement. Get out of the OOC schedule, play one conference game, then let the voters decide.

Suea, I suppose he can come back and use the ol' reliable OU line of: "At least we got there." I'm not talking trash--just saying that it works both ways.

"at least we got there" reminds me of that Barry Manilow song "Looks like we made it"....Don't know how the song ends because I always find another station ASAP....

Hopefully better than recent OU bowl game finales....

Hey Mex - don't forget that ol venerable OSU line......"Shucks, folks, we never get there."...........lol lol......messin' with ya, bud

Imagine how much more exciting college football would be if the first poll came out after a month of the season.

The horrific Texas schedule is the chief reason OU has a chance to win the game at the Cotton Bowl.

Before Texas, OU has BYU on a neutral field and is at Miami.

Good competition prepares a team for the best.

Chump schedules are for second-level teams acting out.

Work continues on our all-time pre-season lock. The leader is Oklahoma State over Georgia.

Oklahoma State should come as a favorite in this one, say minus 2 or 3.

The same day, OU is at the Thunderdome versus BYU.

Making a team with a suspect defense a the lock of the second half of the decade takes guts.

Suea, yeah, saw it coming...and it's fair. Hopefully my Pokes have a shot at changing things this season. It all starts with Georgia.

Speaking of which Pick, it's good to see you are sticking to your guns with the OSU pick over Georgia. Although, it is starting to sound like you are "unlocking" your pick of Texas over OU in the RRS.
