Preseason in rearview mirror

The other day I bid a fond farewell to a companion for all of three weeks. The Dodge Caliber, the rental car tag-team partner Bill Haisten and I drove back and forth to Stillwater for every day of preseason camp, was returned Thursday night.
We put more than 3,000 miles on that vehicle and killed countless bugs along the Cimarron Turnpike. Fortunately, neither Bill nor I encountered any deer crossing our path. We hope to throw a no-hitter in that regard this fall after a terrifying incident last October.
One week from now, we'll be in Seattle covering the Cowboys' season opener against Washington State. This year's opener is not as sexy as last year's opener at Georgia. The hype and anticipation for this game is not as evident as the 2007 encounter between the hedges for those who state they are orange to the bone.
But, the OSU coaches and players are pumped up about the start of the 2008 season. The opener sets the tone for the year. OSU has begun the season away from Stillwater six times already this decade. The battle in Seattle marks the seventh time in the 21st century. OSU is just 2-4 in those games.
Our college football preview section comes out in Sunday's paper. Look for a story on the OSU defensive line and small individual profiles on six members of this year's team.
And, also, keep coming back here to www.tulsaworld.com/sportsextra for web specific coverage of the Cowboys all season. And if you followers of the Cowboys have any questions you want Bill or I to answer, drop either one of us a e-mail or comment in the blog space.
